Re: At last, Donna Reed Show to be released on DVD!!

Our good pal David Lambert of TVShowsonDVD.com has posted some new info about a forthcoming release of this show. All the info can be found here. Basically he says that according to AAA the show is coming, but not to expect it until near the end of the year. No info yet about how it will be presented.

Re: At last, Donna Reed Show to be released on DVD!!

Great news on The Donna Reed Show. I will be buying this one.Hopefully in a season sets format.I'd love to see some extra's.vintage commercials etc.
The two episodes I have now from the general mills promotion some 4 years ago.Have definately been used I have probably watched those two episodes at least 8 or 9 times. It will be great to get some more Donna Reed on dvd.
Now if we can just get seasons 2 through 5 of Hazel and Dennis the Menace.Wishful thinking.

Re: At last, Donna Reed Show to be released on DVD!!

As crazy as this sounds, ill be getting the donna reed dvds, because if this sells well enough , this company that is releasing the dvd ,might consider Dennis . Im not saying I dont like the Donna reed show, if that was the case I wouldnt purchase it.Im just a little suprised that its making its way to dvd before dennis.

Dennis might still be under Sony's control, in which case it might as well be buried forever.

Re: At last, Donna Reed Show to be released on DVD!!

According to The Official Paul Petersen Website, dated 8/17/06, Paul writes "The "rights" to the DR Show, the first five years, are now in the hands of Donna Reed's adult children (Penny, Tony Jr., Timothy and Mary), and Donna Reed's former-husband/Producer, Tony Owen's widow. The last three years of the show are, I believe, still in the hands of Sony Pictures, which purchased Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems". This would make sense as to how AAA got the DVD rights, at least presumably, for the show.

But, that's trusting what Paul Petersen says. He also says "Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures have already put their entire libraries on the Net, every title now available for downloading". WTF? How or where that came from I have no clue, but hopefully his knowledge about the tv series he starred in is better than his creative false knowledge about other studios' properties.

Now, we'll just have to sit back and wait until the end of the year to find out...

WOOOOOHOOOO!! Please let this happen! You don't know how close I was to buying this series through "other means". Like Marc, I only have the General Mills dvd and I've spun that MANY times. Glad to see all the interest about The Donna Reed Show!

I have that DVD too. I was irritated about how edited the shows were I think it was 20-21 minutes per show.

Are you kidding me? Most modern syndicated edits of most shows (pre-1990s) are about 22 minutes.

Re: At last, Donna Reed Show to be released on DVD!!

It's really surprising how quickly this show has disappeared, although probably a lot of people still have syndicated episodes in their collection. A Gary, IN station ran the heavily edited (22 minutes) syndicated episodes about 10 years ago. I was fortunate to have someone tape some of the first season from NICK at NITE. Those were just about perfect, 25 minutes complete, proper fade ins and fade outs. Too bad digital media wasn't available to the public back then. I had heard that the reason Columbia left out the Bob Crane episodes was because of the circumstances surrounding his death. Seems odd that they would pick those eps to cut down the size of the package by coincidence.

Re: At last, Donna Reed Show to be released on DVD!!

I really, really love this quote from the press release:

"In the 1960s, before we lived with computers and cable TV with over 200 channels of mostly junk, the Stone family showed what love, respect and support for one another looked like."

I couldn't have said it better myself. Just this morning I was having a conversation with a friend about how I would trade the internet, cable and DVDs in a second to have the world back the way it was in the 60s when it was so much nicer. The Stones, like the Cleavers, maybe don't show how every family was back then but at least how we wish they were. Where is that depicted now?

Re: At last, Donna Reed Show to be released on DVD!!

I used to love watching this on N@N when I was a kid. You know, back when N@N didn't air shows that are on five different networks and weren't just on prime-time three years ago. I definately plan to get this

Hopefully Patty Duke is coming also.

The 1950's and 1960's were no better than today.

Then it was the fear of Atomic War and "commies" now it's Terrorists.

There was Korea and Vietnam, now it's Afganastan and Iraq.

Did every family REALLY go to Church every Sunday and owned a Ford?

...Television just became "real". ("The Barones" and "The Buckmans" are the most realistic TV familes in the last 15 years!)

Blame Rock & Roll, the beatnicks and Hippies who took over Television and America - or it was a commie plot that actully worked!

Let's stick to the topic of the Donna Reed Show and leave the discussion about current world affairs versus yesteryear to a forum in which that topic is appropriate to discuss there.

Speaking strictly in the context of home entertainment:

Although I love classic TV and would love to "visit" the time to see how the really forgotten programming compares to today, I wouldn't want to live in an era without the devices that allow us to keep and watch TV and films at home of our own choosing.

Sure there was stuff like Donna Reed, Patty Duke, Bewitched and others across the dials (and that is not true today) but it was at the mercy of the Networks and TV station programmers.

No sir, I want to be able to record/buy and keep my favorite shows and movies for whenever I want to watch.

Did Shelley Fabares have a farewell episode or did they just say she was away at college after she left the show?

I'm not sure if they had one. If they did, it would have been the last show of the fifth season. But she did return for a few appearances, including in the 200th episode. Which made sense - she was away at college and would come home from time to time to visit. Much more logical than what they did with Sherry Jackson on Make Room for Daddy. They "sent her away to college" at age 16 and then a year later brought the character back with a new actress. I wonder what it was she did, other than developing a great figure as a teenager, to get tossed off the show.

Are there any early reviews of this set which is scheduled to come out in a few weeks? Has anyone heard about music replacement? After the My Three Sons debacle I'm very afraid for this release.

Since the company releasing it will not be CBS/Paramount, I'm hopeful the music will be intact. I wonder more about the picture quality and whether the episodes will be complete.
