This interests me as well. Does anyone know the thickness of the spine dimension of these cases they apparently plan to use? I'm not sure what "UK releases or PS3 games" means.I was really disappointed to see the BD case used by Disney for their release of Bolt. Instead of putting the DVD disc in an envelope inside the case, they used a plastic flip tray--which is fine--but they went with a much-thicker-than-usual BD case which put to mind the old double-wide Amarays which Disney still uses for their Walt Disney Treasures releases.
Those extra wide cases serve no purpose..except to widen spine displays--thereby taking up valuable shelf real estate for no real function.

I was pleased to hear Criterion was transitioning to a plastic case...but am frankly displeased to hear they are using a "standard" 14MM case.
And they are clear rather than blue?

Sounds like the PS3 cases. It makes sense if Criterion wants to have their thicker booklets.

I like the thickness of the standard Blu ray case but anything slimmer loses character like those superslim ones in teh matrix set.. those are ok for a box set but I'd rather have a standard case size.. I like to put mine on a shelf. After all they aren't that thick to begin with so I hope they don't get any thinner, They aren't in those huge classic Clamshell VHS cases at least. :-)
Also I think they want them clear cases so that the artwork is shown off and the blue color case won't clash with the art they choose as the cover.
Also Criterion can sometimes do some thick booklets for their releases so it won't bother me if they go from a standard BD thickness size to the more thicker Pinocchio size when needed for the booklet, they will look nice on the shelf.
Currently I have all my criterion standard DVDs all on their own shelfs and they look nice even if they rotate from the older 2 Disc thick size cases to the cardboard case like the Furies.

Jack, I hear ya about the ol' VHS clamshells!
And I had resigned myself to the "standard" 12MM Blu-ray cases. At least they were a bit thinner than Amarays. But to have anything bigger is just unnecessary--even for Criterion's booklets.
Especially when 7MM will get the job done in most cases.

Yeah I guess they can fit a decent sized booklet inside just depends unless they do a more elaborate special edtion.. a title like Last Metro I would assume if they eventually release something like Vampyre on BD I would hope they use a heavy stock strong case like the standard DVD release just shorter, but I guess time will tell, I would assume if it does happen that kind of case would be thicker depending on the title.
I just hope they ramp up more releases on this months announcements when they list them.

Exactly true. Thicker cases are nothing other than waste spacers.
For those who don't know...there is a long time thread running in which a number of HTF members (myself included) have slimmed down the cases in our collections (into those slim cases) just to free-up shelf space.
While I understand those to which "bigger means better" and those who think an elaborate uber-mega box set deserves some large over-sized packaging to set it apart from the regular release...but there are a number of us who don't have a lot of space and find the slimmer cases to be an extraordinary efficiency.
It would be nice if Criterion at least held to the "standard" size BD cases and didn't see a need to go larger.

I love the current sizes of the BD cases and the new Criterion cases it isn't as if they are so thick and big we can't buy them cause we don't have the space.I still have a lot of bulky Laserdisc box sets that are super thick and well HUGE. So the BD case well those are small to say the least.
The day that I don't have any space to store a DVD or BD of current sizing then that is the day I die.

Could a Criterion/Buena Vista BD of Chasing Amy be coming? This is what the "View Askew" website says:Quote:

^ Kevin Smith has already said that Clerks and Chasing Amy are coming to Blu-ray this summer so I think that info is probably fairly accurate. I don't know if it's going to be a Criterion release though.

I don't get it. If Criterion were the first to put Armageddon on BD, I would expect that to outsell any other odd title they're releasing. Most of the stuff they release is movies I've never even heard of (except Chasing Amy). They can't sell THAT good.

Well, that's gotta be one reason they made the agreement for Benjamin Button - a high profile title that will sell many more copies than any of their lesser known releases.Even still, the article posted earlier in this thread in regards to the % of copies sold of the BD version of titles vs. the DVD version is a very good sign (I think it was ~40% of sales were BD). Criterion seemed VERY pleased with those results and were prepping more titles because of it. I'm sure the general demographic (film geeks and home theater geeks usually go hand in hand) has helped them here.

you know, I'd probably buy an Armageddon BD from criterion, but not as a regular release. I never got the criterion Armageddon because, iirc, it was non anamorphic. Love their version of the Rock though.

i buy criterion for the picture quality and adherence to classics. stuff like the rock or Armageddon are bonuses... but not requirements.i just preordered 7th seal for june. keep them black and white classics coming!!! i luv owning classic b&w films on BD! =D

Chris: What do you mean that "they're in?"And why do you suppose there's such a substantial price differential between the SD & BD versions of For All Mankind? I thought Criterion was keeping prices nearly the same?

Honestly, I have no idea, Mike. I wish I had inside information on Criterion's ways, but alas, I'm just a fan of their work.
This one's strange, though, since it isn't just a couple of dollars like $31.96 for blu-ray and $29.99 for the DVD. The DVD is priced as one of their lower-tiered discs right now. The pricing could always change on their site, though. I has in the past, I know.
