I am looking for my first home theater system.

I was just browsing CNET reviews and the Onkyo system seem to get great reviews.

I was looking primarily at the HT-S5100 for $500

Is there any system one can build that will be better for a similar price tag?

I will be using it with a Panasonic 42" plasma, Playstation 3, and iPod. I would like it to function well with the TV as well as be a nice music system for house parties. I am willing to spend no more than $600. I don't mind piecing together a system or buying one ready to go in a box.
