That's your prerogative, Ron. But it's the prerogative of others who see these phenomena to raise the issue and try to do something about it, and there's really no reason for you to denigrate our efforts by dismissing them as "nit-picking".

I have to agree that DNR is not a good thing when it affects the picture in such a way that it not only removes detail. But alters the picture from its original print just to remove grain. IMHO studios should rethink there use of DNR as they are doing more harm than good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't appear that you've seen the HD DVD of Trading Places.

Hey Micheal have you seen the Blu-ray version of Trading Places? I have not see ether HD-DVD or Blu-ray release of this title yet. Was wondering if the Bluray version suffered from the DNR like the HD-DVD version does. I am taking your word that the HD-DVD looks bad and I would like to know about the Bluray version.

No, Dave, I haven't seen the BR version. But given the speed with which it was (re)released, I'd be surprised if Paramount did a new transfer.

Trading Places was released on Blu-ray the same day as the HD-DVD: June 5, 2007.

For all relative purposes they are the exact same disc.

Trading Places was my first HD DVD. At first I was astonished by how clear, and vibrant it was. The more I watched it the more I felt something wasn't right. Dan Aykroyd's butler in the film looks like he's made out of wax(not exaggerating) and while the other characters don't look that bad, there are still issues.
Compared to the standard dvd it is worlds better, but it just isn't 100% because of the waxy look to the characters in the film.

Which standard DVD do you have, Bryan? There was the "Looking Good Feeling Good" edition in 2007, which has the same list of special features as the HD DVD and Blu-ray. I haven't seen that one, but my guess is that it was sourced from the same master.

Then there's the original standard DVD from 2002, which was featureless. I have that one, and it's a completely different transfer. In many ways, it's inferior: much darker, with faded colors. But you don't get that waxy mannequin look in close-ups. It's pretty obvious that, in creating a brighter image with stronger colors, the technicians creating the 2007 transfer made the graininess that was already visible on the 2002 standard disc much more noticeable, and then felt they had to take it out to forestall any complaints. So we got a nice smooth image and actors who look like they belong in a video game.

Sorry, was I nit-picking?

I have the 2002 edition as well. When I showed my friend the differences between that and the HD version he was awe struck, and bought an HD player the following week. It wasn't until later that I figured out the people looked like a Zamboni had gone over their faces, with the lines and wrinkles mysteriously polished right out of the film. Oh well, maybe it's just a phase the studios are going through. Hope it doesn't last!
