I feel almost the opposite - physically I can picture her in it, but as an actress I think she's a block of wood.

man, that's funny...weird how individual reactions can be so wildly divergent.

the black widow is muscular and lean - she basically has the body of a gymnast, since that's ostensibly what she is. johanssen is zaftig - soft and pillowy - i can't even imagine her performing the physical feats that natasha romanov regularly performs in the course of her widow-ing.

but that is as may be....

Re: Iron Man sequel news

It's kind of amazing what training, costuming and stuntwork can do for an actor. Look at Linda Hamilton. She was a fluffy ingenue type and then big haired chick before and in the first Terminator and the second one she looked like she could rip my head off my shoulders. Will Scarlett go though this trouble for Iron Man? Maybe. Or they might re-task her character a bit. Since when was Jarvis a computer? He is now. She could be fine. I hope Rourke keeps on with the fun roles, though. Too bad the other Marvel movies are getting delayed through all of this.

Splash Page Jon Favreau And Gwyneth Paltrow Talk ‘Iron Man 2’ Casting & Shooting Dates, Filming Begins In Two Weeks?

Quote:
Favreau was on hand at SXSW and spoke with Ain’t It Cool News about the alleged casting of Mickey Rourke as the “Iron Man 2″ villain and Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow. While he wouldn’t confirm the news without Marvel’s official approval, the director certainly dropped some hints about the casting rumors.
“I can’t confirm any casting stuff because there have been no [official] announcements made,” said Favreau. “The people that have deals should all be finalized in our cast this week.”
“There are no big surprises in casting coming that I can foresee,” he added, seeming to confirm that Rourke and Johansson will be involved as rumored. “It’s going to be a really, really good group of people and a story that takes advantage of our cast.”

'The Soloist' Star Robert Downey Jr. Reveals 'Iron Man 2' Secrets!

Quote:
"The film is almost entirely about character, and yet we still have twice as much action as we did last time, so it's going to be nuts," Robert tells our own Thea Andrews of the super sequel, set to start filming Monday. "Essentially 'Iron Man 2' is about looking behind the armor, or the armature, of a superhero. It's one thing to say you're Iron Man, it's another thing to be fully ready to do that."

Re: Iron Man sequel news

I am not onboard with Scarlett playing Black Widow, total mis-cast to me. Scarlett is too short and too curvy for the role, plus I doubt she'll be believable as a spy with Russian/slavic heritage, just too WASPy for the role. Boo.

Stana Katic (Kate Beckett on "Castle" on ABC) might have been a better choice as Black Widow.

First look: 'Iron Man 2' explores the unmasked life - USATODAY.com

Warning Spoiler! Click to show
The sequel to last summer's blockbuster, which began shooting three weeks ago and opens May 7, 2010, takes place six months after Stark revealed his identity as Iron Man, says director Jon Favreau. And the development is playing out with unexpected results. "How many superheroes are open about their true identities?" he asks. "We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences — in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore."

Comic Book Resources > Cup O' Joe: Joe Quesada Talks Thor, Iron Man 2

Quote:
Kiel Phegley: On the other side of the Marvel Studios coin, "Iron Man 2" is filming right now. Director Jon Favreau seems like a Hollywood guy who's really been brought into the Marvel fold. You and other creators had a lot of input on how “Iron Man” turned out. How has that relationship changed, if at all, going into the second movie?

Joe Quesada:
Favreau is really, really intense and very cerebral. I remember having a dinner at Comic-Con, I want to say three years ago, where he just grabbed me. It was a dinner for CAA, the talent agency. He introduced himself to me, put his hand on my shoulder, sat me down at a table, and we just sat there and talked. We almost skipped dinner. About two hours later, someone tapped Jon on the shoulder, one of his friends who said, "You know you're not being very social. We're all here." [laughs] And we just sat there and talked Iron Man, and he wanted to know who he is and why Tony Stark does what he does. That was really key to Favreau: why put on the suit and try to do good things? It was a much tougher question once he defeats the Iron Monger, gets his tech and his company back...why continue doing this? What does Tony Stark stand for?

In essence, the thing I never revealed about that conversation in the past is that Jon was looking for these answers because he was already thinking ahead, he was thinking about “Iron Man 2.”

See, it doesn't quite work on film that he goes and stops a little lady from getting mugged. While that may be an ancillary part of it, when you have that suit of armor, the world’s greatest weapon, the story has to be bigger, and your reason for being has to be bigger. But at the same time, it has to be small and streamlined enough that an audience can grab hold of it. Favreau is all about that. And at the same time, where do Tony's allegiances lie? It was almost the same kind of questions we had during "Civil War." So time with Favreau is sort of spent quietly huddling and talking about a character's reason for doing what he does. Again, that's also a part of that Marvel formula.

Here are a couple of shots of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.  She looks good in the part - I almost don't even see her really.

Paltrow and Downey had a good breezy chemistry to me in the first film. I would hope they would advance the Stark/ Pepper Potts relationship rather than force in a fanboy patronizing one-off for marquee purposes. Especially since I'm not sure there will be as much chemistry between Johanson and Downey.

Black Widow is supposed to show up in the Avengers movie (according to rumors on a film that isn't even written at this point :)) so she is not going to be a one-and-done character.

Scarlett looks more like Anna Mercury than Black Widow with all the long curls in her hair.  Not feeling her look as BW.

This is how I envision the classic Black Widow look:

http://marvel.com/news/moviestories.8859.Iron_Man_2_Wraps_on_Schedule

Quote:
The cameras started rolling on April 6 and filming ended today, July 18. After 71 days of shooting, “Iron Man 2” wrapped principal photography—right on schedule!

So how did it go? Was it tougher getting “Iron Man 2” shot than it was “Iron Man?” To find out, we went directly to one of the key players in the Marvel movie world, Kevin Feige, Producer of "Iron Man 2" and President of Marvel Studios!

"Shooting 'Iron Man 2' was a fantastic experience and we couldn't be happier. Although there were many challenges in making this film, having Jon Favreau, Robert Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow and almost the entire crew from the first film back on board, allowed us to hit the ground running as everyone was instantly familiar with each other from day one,” Feige told Marvel.com. “This dynamic allowed us to get done what we needed on a day to day basis and was a big factor in why we finished slightly ahead of schedule.”

Of course, we all know by now there’s also a bunch of new A-List actors interacting with the crew from the first film to make “Iron Man 2,” but according to Feige, it never became a concern.

“Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell and especially Don Cheadle all stepped right in and meshed well with our returning cast,” he said.

Additionally, the first time around on “Iron Man” afforded them keen knowledge when it came to producing key aspects of “Iron Man 2.”

”From our experience on the first film, we learned what works and doesn't work in terms of shooting practical versus CGI especially with the Iron Man suit,” Feige explained. “This enabled us to be much more efficient in many departments, making it a much smoother experience.”

But if you think making a film of this magnitude isn’t without its own particular obstacles, guess again.

"What’s more difficult in shooting a sequel is that expectations are much higher for this film and we really want to top what we did on the first film,” he said. “Every day involved working extremely hard in order to improve upon what we did on the first film."

So now with “Iron Man 2” in the can, what happens before we all get to see “Iron Man 2” on May 7, 2010?

"The next step for us is beginning the post production process which is extensive and filled with its own set of challenges,” Feige said. “It is also a very exciting time because you get to see all the hard work from the hundreds of cast and crew members begin to come to life."

But is the magic of Comic-Con 2007 repeatable? Favreau says he's less nervous about this tryout than he was two years ago.

"Back then, we just wanted to say hello, to introduce ourselves," he says. "This time around, we want to say thank you."

While I would have liked to have seen Stana Katic in the role of Black Widow, a friend suggested Milla Jojovich to play Black Widow (but I am not all that crazy about Milla from an acting standpoint).
