The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

How come all of a sudden the CC discs are cheap? I recall a year or so "Night and Fog" was released at around ten bucks but CC released a statement that they wanted as broad as possible a release for that one title.

I haven't seen I Spy in a long time.

Probably because this is a short film (I think around a half hour). I don't know what else is included as far as extras but it seems like it would have made sense to release this with another one of Lamorisse's films like "Stowaway in the Sky".

It might also be possible that the low price was to coincide with Holocaust Rememberance Day, which I believe last year fell on April 25th (this year it's May 1st).

Just a theory...

Night and Fog (1955) is only 31 minutes

Regarding the new titles...

White Mane (1952) is only 39 minutes
The Red Balloon (1956) is only 34 minutes
Paddle to the Sea (1966) is only 28 minutes

One review of The Red Balloon said there were limited extras - a printed commentary about the movie in the case - so I assume the same with the other two shorts.

All three titles could easily fit on one DVD, but Criterion has it available as a three pack -- "Three Children's Classics from Janus Films (3-DVD Set)" -- for $31.96, plus shipping. You can also get all three individually from Buy.com (with free shipping) for $26.97, which is what I did.

Come to think of it, Night and Fog is only about a half-hour too. So is CC going to a "run length" price model? I'd hate to see what they would want for Abel Gance's Napoleon.

The Criterion Fanny and Alexander is also a bit more pricey.

I presumed the lower prices were do to the extraordinarily short running times.

I believe so. Or does Criterion not assign spine numbers to all its titles? I assumed everything produced & distributed by Criterion was part of its "collection."

Re: Weekly RoundUp 4-29-2008

Jay: thanks for that link. It's an interesting comment about how they are considering these to be children's films that don't need the "Criterion approach."

Here's more from the blog entry...but there is much more of note if you are interested.

Quote:
So why the different handling? Because these films are different. Yes, they are classics of world cinema, but they also need to reach a broad audience we don’t usually have to consider: children and their families. Most Criterion editions are geared toward a fairly sophisticated viewership, lovers of classic and contemporary cinema who want to explore the making of each film in depth. They are undaunted by subtitles, for example, and they value supplemental features like interviews with filmmakers and scholars that set each film in context. In contrast to the average Cannes Palme d’or winner, The Red Balloon needs to reach an audience that may not even know how to read! Much of what sets a Criterion edition apart will be lost on them. As with our Eclipse line, we didn’t want our own work style (and its commensurate cost) to keep these films from reaching their audience. We don’t expect anyone to go out and buy both editions—we’re not fans of double dipping either—but in this case wanted to make simple editions of the films available, keeping costs as low as possible, to encourage a broader audience of children and their families to try what we think are some of the best children’s films ever made.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 4-29-2008

Just to avoid confusion, I think the Blu-Ray deals are actually on TMNT, which is the CGI film from a couple of years ago, as opposed to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the live-action film from the '90s (which I don't think is out on BD yet).

Note that TMNT contains some truly spectacular A/V demo material, and isn't a bad movie to boot (just skip the first 10 minutes, which make little sense and spoil the mystery of things that get explained again later anyway ).

Madonna's "Hard Candy" CD???

Actually, I wasn't sure what Bill was referring to either...unless it's some theatrical release...

I believe Bill is referring to the release of the latest game in the popular Grand Theft Auto video game franchise.

As for the DVDs, I'll eventually pick up the Diamondbacks WS set once it hits the inevitable 50% sale that those baseball sets always have.
Does anyone even click on these "My Collection" links?

I doubt I'll actually get that set...but there is something awfully attractive about that particular world series...

For those of you in the Northeast, Newbury Comics has the Fall of the Roman Empire Limited Collector's Edition for $29.99.

Mike, this LCE is a 3 disc set, not 2 discs as listed in the grid.
