For my clarification, does that also apply to imflammatory format comments such as, "I give up, will keep my old HD DVDs discs and sell the Blu-ray sh**."?

Yes it does.

However, since, as noted above, the poster who made that comment has voluntarily left both the thread and HTF, no purpose is served by any response to that remark.

Moveover, our rules are very clear that problematic remarks should be dealt with by reporting them, not replying to them.

Absolutely not trying to start a fight or anything here, but in the quick quality guide Dark City is listed under Level Two, not One. Just curious about the discrepancy although I'm assuming one is a mistake.

As has been pointed out, the guide went up quickly and in an unfinished state. Both typos as well as positions are still being fixed.

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible. This I did."  T.E. Lawrence

I believe the answer can be found here:

Although I suppose it could be a mistake also.

Maybe I'm loopy, but all I see here is the original post by RAH, with nothing following and no links to a list.

RAH's work-in-progress safe list is stickied to the top of this forum area.

At the end, RAH says:

Quote:
The bottom line is that for at least a couple of weeks, this will be a work in progress.

Which, to me, said things, such as the ranking of titles, may change a bit over the short-term.

It's as much an attitude and conditioning issue as an equipment issue.

I still think this is one of the keys to getting better transfers and I am surprised that this is not talked about more. Hopefully in a year or two all work will be done and supervised using large screens and proper viewing distances.

Re: "Dark City: Director's Cut" coming to Blu-ray on July 29

I think this is all (the DNR/EE/grain removal saga) part of the learning process. Remember back in 1997 we were all wowed and awed over the fantastic transfers of these shiny new discs called DVDs. Those transfers now look terrible even by DVD standards.

But it was a learning process, for both the consumers and the producers of the discs.

Hopefully in 2-3 years time (if not sooner) we can look back on the early days of HD discs and see the same pattern.

I think that's probably more the case as well. I wish I had a better memory, but there was a SD DVD out a few years ago (Might of been "Punch Drunk Love", and I remember that it had EE issues, and there was plenty of (rightly so) complaining. The guy who worked on it (I want to say it was David Prior, but by all means don't quote me) chimed in and said he had no idea where the hell it came from, it wasn't present when he telecyned and worked on it, that it appeared after mastering.

Is thats what is possibly happening with these BD discs? Where these problems happening on the now dead HD-DVDs?

I agree with your assessment. This too, will pass.

But...without steady pressure and feedback from forums such as these, the quality shortfall during the early years might have taken much longer to overcome, and some issues, such as aspect ratio, might never have reached their current, acceptable degree of acceptance.

Yes. Three of the titles currently listed at RAH's "Level Two" are Paramount titles most widely seen on HD DVD: Face/Off, Trading Places, The Untouchables. The excessive levels of DNR were noted on those titles long ago, but the issue didn't start to get real attention until RAH took it on with Patton and The Longest Day.

There are even some who have claimed that heavy DNR was used on those masters because they were being prepared for dual HD DVD and BD releases, but I've never found that argument even remotely convincing. It's the product of being so focused on a single issue (the format war) that you forget about all the other issues out there.

Re: "Dark City: Director's Cut" coming to Blu-ray on July 29

Here's a review of the Blu-ray disc. Not sure if it's been posted yet but this thread has become useless as to find an actual review of the Blu release.

Blu-ray review of Dark City (Unrated Director's Cut) - DVDTOWN.com

I am picking this up tomorrow. My local BB is only getting 5 copies so I'll be there when the doors open.

What a roller coaster.
Only learned this was coming minutes ago. Immediately pre-ordered.
Then I come here and find 226 posts, skimming, skimming, reading posts from familiar names, skimming, someone is being unkind, don't order, skimming, go ahead order...aaaaahhhhhhhh.

It is perfectly fine to want to own the film despite not being happy with the transfer, although personally I am not so sure if I really want to watch this transfer more than once

"Hopefully in 2-3 years time (if not sooner) we can look back on the early days of HD discs and see the same pattern."

The thing is I double and even in a couple cases triple dipped on alot of those titles that were rereleased, which is something I really dont want to do with BR.

I'm afraid that Pandora's box has already been opened. The studios know there's a certain percentage that will buy certain movies they like/love more than once, and it's a way for them to keep a regular revenue stream. Like it or not, double dips are here to stay, barring some enormous consumer backlash (which I don't see coming).

looks okay to me. background is out of focus (so shouldn't be detailed), and the guy who is the focus looks like what I'd expect a film to look like frankly.

mine is on its way from waner but that shot looks the way Patton screen shots looked.

no facial details, that light image near his ear looks odd, like it's out away from his face.

eh, i'll be seeing for myself soon anyay.

It's a screenshot, which frankly, are pointless and useless. Add to the fact that it's also 10+ years old. I bought this today and have friends coming over tonight to watch it.
