Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

I've been using Tversity for a while to stream media to my PS3 and 360. Mac owners can use Twonkymedia but it costs $40 after the 30 day trial.

Okay, so does anybody know of any huge differences of using
Twonkymedia at $40 or Connect 360 at $20 for the Mac?

Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

Well, I also got "Xbox 360 Elite". Briefly tried it yesterday and it seems to be somewhat louder than PS3 (the sound is more "rough" at least). But like I said, only tried it once.

It seems, that I also got the "falcon"-model, since it´s from "2008 - 03 - 14" and has that "175W" PSU. It has also "LOT NO: 0811, TEAM: FDOU".

More info here:
How to spot a Falcon 65nm 360 in the wild - Xbox 360 Fanboy
..and here:
Xbox.com | Xbox 360â„¢ System - How to see if you have a 65nm (Falcon) console...

Note, that "175W" wasn´t listed *on the package*, so not all of these "falcon"-models have "175W"-sticker on the side of the box. Only way to be fully sure is to open the package and check the console/power cord.

Then again by now, probably all of these new consoles are "falcon" models..

The label on mine oddly does not show any power info or manufacture date, but it is team FDOU and Lot 0809. That means I should probably be good, right?

Yes, this was partly my point. My *box* didn´t show any "power info" (and mine was from 03/2008). It´s okay to "gently" open the box (at home, I mean!) and check the console (which shows the "date") & power adaptor (which shows the "power info") - if you *don´t use* the console etc, you can still return it after checking it (at least in my country). I´m still sure that it´s "Falcon" for you.

Btw, the Xbox 360 is indeed rather loud (louder than "some other consoles" to my ears), at least when you put the disc in/vertical position. I have to say that I wasn´t very happy. I tried "GTA4" (with plenty of dialogue at the start of the game, etc) and was a bit distracted by the noise. Then again with the "louder scenes", it´s not that bad. Sure, these "fan noise"-issues seems to be completely subjective and perhaps there are even differences with different units, but still I can´t personally ignore this... Well, I have to test it more..

I looked in Best Buy and all the Elites were lotted from 808 to 810 and all said Team: FDOU. The Pros all had the same lot range, but some said CSOU.

Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

Perhaps I´m playing devil's advocate here, but damn this Xbox 360 is LOUD. I´ve now tried a couple of games and played "Gears of War" almost through (awesome game, btw) and the noise level is (steadily) quite high (and I actually thought that my PS3 is somewhat "noisy"... I was wrong.. ). I guess it´s mainly because the console is reading the disc (it has some "fan noise" obviously, but it really gets loud when you put the disc in). It´s hard to imagine, that you could enjoy watching some "quiet & moody" film with the console..

Well, "Gears of War" was such a good experience (I got also "Halo 3" recently), so I´m sure I can have some good time with this console also... Despite the noise. After all, I bought this for the games only.

Downloaded a few retro games also, which went pretty smoothly. I still feel that PS3 has superior graphical user interface (this is of course my personal thing/opinion).

Haven´t tried the online-gaming yet with Xbox 360.

Halo 3 online muliplay is so-so, and that is because of all the obnoxious 12 year olds playing it. Call of Duty 4 is outstanding and I highly recommed it.

Can the PS3 output Dolby True HD from Bluray discs encoded in this fashion or does it cut down to Digital 5.1?? I know I need a processor with True HD processing of course. Any input appreciated.

Ronald,

Also, don't forget to check out all of the movie and game trailers, many of which are in HD (and are free).

You can also rent movies, many in HD, although their terms kinda stink, so I'd only do it as a last resort, or if absolutely nothing is on the tube and you're feeling too lazy to go to the rental store:-)

Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

Ok, I had to return my original Elite (long story) but anyway The new one I picked up had a sticker pasted over the original info sticker. I want to make sure I have a Falcon. The new sticker did not have lot information but the team label said TMEM. I peeled the sticker back and saw that the original one said team label FDOU and a lot number of 0814. The mfg date on the back of the console says 2008-04-02. I checked the power brick and it said 175w. I'd be pretty sure that this was a falcon, but this new info sticker on the box that they stuck over the original one concerns me. If this info helps, I got it at Best Buy with a 2 game pack in promotion that I guess they are running now.

Alot of people are reporting that if they get a repaired Xbox it has a new sticker over the old one, so it sounds like you got one that was returned to Best Buy, repaired and resold?

Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

I was suspicious of something like that. I did notice the box looked slightly beat up. Not major or anything. But just some dings and some slightly banged corners. It also looked like the seal sticker had been removed before. I can't imagine they would sell a refurb as new, but I suppose it could have been a previously returned unit. Would anyone recommend going through the trouble of exchanging it again.

I really doubt that is the case. I'm pretty sure that any returned, or repaired items are always marked as such.

I can't help you with the question of it being a refurbished unit or not, but this link (from above) has a couple of ways you can physically check if it's a Falcon or not:

Xbox.com | Xbox 360â„¢ System - How to see if you have a 65nm (Falcon) console...

If you got a Falcon, and if it is really brand new, I wish I had gotten the package you did. My Best Buy had two of them, but I figured the units with the pack-in games were all the old build.

Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

On the surface. The new one I got meets all the criteria. I don't know anything about the actual hardware inspection. I have seen the pictures, but I would never know how to be sure.

Can anyone confirm whether game pack in versions are the old build. The games mine came with are "Marvel Ultimate Alliance" and "Forza 2" If that helps.

Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

I could use a little help, and I thought I'd turn here before trying to get an answer out of Microsoft.

Until I can get a wireless adapter, I am connected from my 360 to my router with an ethernet cable. I'm able to sign onto Live, download demos, etc. I would like to connect to my computer, and I followed MS's instructions: open WMP 11, turn on sharing under Library. I have done so, and it knew the 360 was there and has a green checkmark beside it. But, I can't see the computer from my 360 and it fails the PC Connection test. I've checked my firewall settings, and all the ports they want open are open. Any ideas?

Also, once it's working, can you transfer things from the computer to the 360 (songs and the like), or can it only stream?

I'm no 360 troubleshooting expert by any means, so given what you've already said/tried...did you turn on your PC first, then turn on the 360? Are you able to ping the 360 from your PC once it's (the 360) up and on the network?

To answer your second question--IIRC it is not possible (i.e., allowable) to transfer (i.e., copy) media files directly from the PC to the 360.

WMP seems to know the 360 is there, but that's the only place I can find. It doesn't show up in My Network Places.

Re: xBox or PS3? Plus...what to buy?.....etc!

We're thinking of getting a game system this year -- my wife wants to play Lego Indiana Jones, which isn't available for my GameCube.

I'm flummoxed by the choices. The XBox 360 seems like the way to go for us. But there are three versions, and I have no sense of how much hard drive space is needed. And what about reliability? It seems like the XBox 360 has an outrageous failure rate: is an extended warranty necessary?

I'm not enthused about spending $400+ for a game system (when my GameCube was $150, new). And I meant to put this off until Christmas, but the 360 is on sale this week for about $270 at CC.

I thought $349 was the new price? CC has it listed for $299, plus a $30 GC.

Life was easier when you just had one console. Having, what?, seven different options from three companies is too much for my simple mind.

All three consoles have their own advantages. My quick advice is, that try to find e.g. Xbox 360 and perhaps PS3 and try them out. Xbox 360 is quite loud (when it´s reading the disc), when PS3 has some minor fan noise. Wii is pretty quiet. PS3 has Blu-ray (and then some), while Xbox 360 is more-or-less "pure game console". Wii doesn´t use HD resolution.

Difficult to fully compare these three. E.g. my friend wants to buy a game console (mainly to his son), so he´s coming to my place to try them out. At least try them out first if you can..

Ps. "Lego Indiana Jones" is available with all consoles (and I mean all, even PS2, DS and PSP).

Not the GameCube.

Thanks for the other comments. I've got a friend with all three systems that I might bother for a demo.

I found my pricing confusion: the $299 CC deal is for the older, 20GB model.

While some games were released (I believe) in GC in 2007, there won´t be any more games to that system. GameCube's successor is now "Wii".

With Wii, you can also play (most, at least) the old GC-titles (note, that you still have to use the GC´s controller and memory card).

So yes, perhaps time to move on.

This is the best way to try them. In the stores, you have noise, bright lights (no, I´m not Gizmo.. ), badly calibrated TV-sets and perhaps that one game that they might have at the moment (just the one that you don´t really like). People play these games in their living rooms or kid´s rooms, which have a totally different environment compared to e.g. stores. So if you have a chance, try them out.

Dunno if the following deserves its own thread either in this forum or in the Bargains forum, but...for you Call of Duty 4 fans, Circuit City has the 360 version on sale this week for $39.99. Apparently it's OOS in many stores if you choose to believe their online inventory but you should be able to PM at Best Buy--I was able to do so yesterday evening...and got double RZ points to boot during their RZ private event!

Note/FWIW--BB online inventory showed OOS in-store as well for all the stores in my area but I decided to chance it anyways...turns out I guessed right.

I believe "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Game of the Year" re-release (same game, just slightly differing cover) is slightly cheaper. $39.99 is still a good deal.
