You expected all 150 previously released HD-DVD titles at once? 1/4th of that by the end of the year, plus some new to HDM titles is pretty good, IMO.

That's not too bad. Heroes S1 and S2 is a pretty solid release. I'm hoping Battlestar Galactica will be high up on their release next.

I agree, it is a couple of months later than I expected but I have no complaints. All we need now is Paramount.

O'yes! I imagine they'll probably wait until the end of the currently airing Season 4 but I'm very eager to have this entire series in HD.

Re: Breaking News: Universal Announces Blu-ray plans!

I'm going to have to second Sam on his post. Given how quiet it's been with the releases, I'm looking forward to a variety of Blu-ray and standard def review material by the summer.

Sam, I'll be happy to help with the overflow if we see a wave of catalogue releases. That's going to get complicated due to some releases being ports of the previous HD-DVDs, and others being new transfers. Not to mention the audio mixes. It's going to be an interesting year, and I'm looking forward to it.

Wow, that's an awful list. Not even the new Bourne film. Or Apollo 13 - anything decent.

Still, nice to see they're getting underway.

Does anyone (besides fans) really care about anniversaries? I know some companies still have the rare "#th Anniversary Edition" banner across the top of their releases but that seems to have mostly died away. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Vertigo but I don't think Universal cares about its 50th anniversary and will just release it whether it's the 50th or 51st or 53rd anniversary.

Not all of the re-releases are ports. Some are being re-encoded for BD-50s with a higher video bitrate.

I agree. A lot of those titles came out to have title support during the format war. As a whole catalog didn't sell well on either format, so I am suprised to see as many catalog titles announced as they did. I consider them a bonus and am happy to have the day and date going forward (although I wish they would hurry up and do Charlie Wilson's War).

I am hopeful that this would indeed be true, but as WB has shown with recent clarifications pertaining to the encodes for 'Batman Begins', 'V for Vendetta', et al on BD, I'll believe it when I see it (literally.)

Re: Breaking News: Universal Announces Blu-ray plans!

Good news. I personally don´t need these Mummy-films and such, but this is a good start. "40 titles in the second half of the year" is not bad at all. Now I feel a bit silly that I bought all those Universal HD DVD-titles from the recent sales. I should´ve just saved my money (since I doubt that these catalog-titles will be that expensive..).

Both "American gangster" and "Miami Vice" include two versions (theatrical/dir.cut) on these HD DVD combo-releases. It´s interesting to see that will they just "drop" that other version.. Hope not, of course. 50gb is now in use and all. And Universal has always been pretty good to include all the extras and such (not the case with "American gangster", though.. ).

"Doomsday", "Hellboy 2", "The Incredible Hulk".. Bring it on!

It will be a while before all their HD DVD catalog comes out on BD. If you got a good deal enjoy them.

Re: Breaking News: Universal Announces Blu-ray plans!

I'm impressed they want to get two large multi-disc tv sets out so early. S1 of Heroes is one of my favorite HDM releases. I haven't been following response to S2, apart from some early disappoinment from a few people- what's the concensus so far from fans that have been following it?
I do hope they don't wait till mid 09 to begin releasing Galactica. Otherwise, between all the ports and new releases I'm not interested in, Universal is likely to save me a lot of money over the next couple of years.

As engaging as Heroes S1 was, I found S2 to be a major letdown. I'm actually quite glad that I was able to catch-up on S1, so that I could watch S2 via my HD DVR because I would have been even more disappointed with S2 if I had cost me anything more than my time. That said, I'm still wiling to give S3 a chance.

Re: Breaking News: Universal Announces Blu-ray plans!

Paul, could part of your disappointment have been due to seeing the show via small doses (with distractions) staggered over weeks and months or do you think the content was honestly less satisfying? Reason I ask is I noticed many reviewers of the season 1 set say how much better they felt it played revisiting it on disc as opposed to watching it unfold week to week. That is something I can easily understand and why I don't miss conventional tv watching anymore. The bugs , the commercials, 40 minutes of plot advancement having to last 7 days or longer is maddening. Think the season might play better if you're watching 3 or 4 hours of it at a clip- or is it just too scattershot , contrived, or otherwise fundementally flawed for that to help?

Eh, I figure I saved money getting them in the sales. I doubt the BD reissues will be easy to find at $12 for a while, and I can actually watch them in the meantime

Any new BD titles from Universal is nice, but the real question is-- will they be barebones or include features that take advantage of the format?

I can't answer for Paul but I think that's part of the negative fan and critical reaction to S2. However, another larger part of it is that S2 just isn't as good as S1.

Heroes creator Tim Kring did an interview with Entertainment Weekly a few months ago where he was brutally honest about (and, in some cases, overly critical) and acknowledged the problems with the second year. Apparently, he's been working on a more detailed idea of where he wants to go with the show in future seasons which will hopefully thwart any major missteps in the future.

Re: Breaking News: Universal Announces Blu-ray plans!

Well I'm just glad to hear Uni is ramping up. Day and date new titles are essential and should be a given. It's hard to get excited over movies I've never seen but based on the previews I am looking forward to Hellboy II.

As for the catalogs mentioned it's a bit underwhelming but I'll be upgrading to the BD's of The Mummy, Hulk (which isn't mentioned but it's pretty much a given) and maybe American Gangster if they do it right. The others like Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Miami Vice, End of Days, U-571 and Land of the Dead are marginal titles to me which I passed on HD DVD so I'll be doing the same with the BD's.

Not surprised to see the same titles previously offered on HD DVD, but it would be nice to see some new ones thrown out here and there. I'd imagine that'll make up the bulk of Uni's catalog output for the next 2 years. Which is fine I guess, because I'd like to convert as many HD DVD titles over to BD sooner rather than later - while the HD DVD's still have a fraction of their aftermarket value left.

Now where's Paramount?

Hopefully their plans for "among other" catalog titles include some new to HDM, such as the Hitchcock films, Conan & Scarface and not just titles that have been available on HD DVD.

My thoughts exactly. I held off buying Heroes S1 since I was waiting for the format war to end and stayed out, but figured I'd ultimately want an HD set, so held off the SD release.

For BSG though, I've always bought the SD versions upon release, so this would be an expensive double-dip.
