Need help in finding a computer or parts

Well, I've checked with local colleges to see if any of them are auctioning off computers that they were replacing with new ones. The answer I got was that they don't do those sort of things.

I guess you'd be lucky to be able to find a school that offers that and is currently upgrading computers.

I don't want to buy a new computer because I'm only trying to get a family member back up and running to be able to browse the internet and some word processing if necessary.

I have built a couple of computers and I am familiar with computer hardware. I already have a screen and HD along with a power supply but I need a new case and a motherboard and processor. Speed isn't a priority so just basic computing would do.

If I can pick up a cheap computer thats being replaced by an upgraded computer that would be great but not necessarily needed.

Are there centers or websites that offer recycled computer components at discounted prices?

Any advice appreciated.....Help!!!

Re: Need help in finding a computer or parts

I don't know if they have recycled parts, but newegg.com is probably the best company for online computer parts. A quick look shows me new motherboards as low as $44.99.

Check Freecycle because I know folks who toss out old Pentium 200s and really old stuff like that. Probably wont run anything new like Vista or anything but if you are truly looking for basic computing... I see usually monitors and printers being given away, CPUs and stuff, less so, but they're out there..

Re: Need help in finding a computer or parts

Check with local government. I work for an agency jointly funded by the state and county. Our computers come out of the county budget, and when we declare old PCs surplus they get a hard-drive wipe and go off to some sort of periodic county auction. (My job is done once the paperwork is approved to get rid of the things, so I'm a little vague on the rest of the process. )

Ditto local high schools and especially community colleges. But you might find it just as cheap, or nearly so, to buy new or refurbed from a web vendor. NewEgg is a good one, so are TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Accessories, PC Components, & Electronics and Geeks.com - Computer parts, Laptop computers, Desktop computers, Computer hardware. Check out the clearance sections of sites like circuitcity.com Consumer Electronics and CompUSA.com - Computers, Laptops, Televisions, Software, and Electronics from the All-New CompUSA! as well.

Gee... If only there were a section of the forum dedicated to computers where you might get more eyeballs on a thread liks this...

Re: Need help in finding a computer or parts

Check your local Craigslist. People seem to ask more for laptops than they are worth, but desktops can usually be had pretty cheap.
