Another newbie question, Onkyo reciever

Hello all,

I am just starting to get into finishing my basement and I am trying to figure out surround sound. Just bought some great JBL in wall speakers(I liked them anyway). Now I need to find a receiver. I am leaning toward an Onkyo 605 or 705. Any thoughts on either of them? I have heard and read that may be my best option for staying at 500 or less. I would welcome any input on this. Thanks in advance.

Re: Another newbie question, Onkyo reciever

They are both good recivers, the 705 has a few more options and has pre outs, if you dont plan on adding an amp later, i would get the 605. But if you do some checking around, you might be able to find an 805 pretty reasonable. I have an 805 and love it, but will be upgrading to seperates soon.

Re: Another newbie question, Onkyo reciever

I have the 705 and would highly recommend it or the 805. The 605 is a little cheaper, but is missing a few options (Audyssee MultEQ, THX Select, few HDMI, etc).

Not sure what features you desire but I just purchased the 605 and absolutely love it. Was an upgrade from a 505.

Welcome to the forum! The 805 can be found on-line for about $150 more than the 705 and to me it's worth the money. 30 more wpc, THX Ultra (and processing), 4 ohm capable, better s/n ratio, higher currant amp (60 vs. 36), Burr-Brown dacs, and a back-lit remote are the main advantages. And the 805 shares the same chassis with the 875, the 705 with the 605. The 805 also weighs more than 50 lbs. The 705 is less than 30. The 705 is a fine receiver and received an excellent review in "The Perfect Vision", but the 805 seems to offer quite a bit more.

Re: Another newbie question, Onkyo reciever

I'm also looking at the 605, actually my father is. he doesn't need it THX certified so is the 605 a good buy? he also want to put Ipod dock to it. what are some good docking stations for Ipods to the 605?
