Bathtub replacement

OK folks, next home improvement project in the Humble Household of Jay H, is to replace the whirlpool bathtub and shower door and cheap plastic shower walls with a new bathrub and tiling and a new shower door. Couple questions. Was browsing Lowes last night as I had to return something, it appears the standard bathtub size is roughly 60" x (30"-32")
I measured the visible tub space in mine as 58.5" x 30" and I am guessing that my shower wall enclosure on both sides is eating the other 1.5".

How about the "rough'in" for the drain? Since I'm familiar with replacing a toilet (as I replaced my old American Standard with a Toto Drake when i first moved in), are shower "rough-ins" a standard length? I didn't see any specific mention in the bathtubs I saw at lowes?

I don't know why the seller said he could only find a whirlpool tub that fit because it has the water spouts and some control stuff there but it isn't hooked up and it isn't functional. I found a lot of models that are 60" wide which is the rough dimensions... the size doesn't seem non-standard to me anyway.

Anyway, thought I'd check on the drain hole to make sure I wont have to do any moving of the drain when I replace the tub...

Re: Bathtub replacement

Just a personal opinion, but unless you have a backside access to the faucets and drain pull (like on the other side of the wall), I would recommend replacing them or at least getting a new washer pack for the faucets while you have the thing all to pieces. Its one of those things that is pretty simple to do when you have the tub out, and a pain when you have it all together and it happens - trust me.

Sheeze Jay...ya make me tired just reading about your latest project on the shack I'm determined to take a breather on my hut this summer.....unless the Mrs figures out how to over-ride the parental controls on the remote and starts watching HGTV again.

Not really... especially if you are dealing with specialty tubs (like whirlpools or designer tubs). I swapped out a very simple tub with another simple looking tub (different color) and my drain placement had to be altered.

Re: Bathtub replacement

Well, as far as the faucet stuff goes, after taking apart my entire faucet and dealing with Moen and the local plumbing store, I can easily take the faucet off, I know how to remove my bathtub spigot and my stairwell to my basement is behind the shower faucets and there is already a cut in the drywall there specifically to get at the innards. In any case, the hot and cold water faucets have brand new valves in them (that's what I had to replace when I moved in) so they should be good to go. I may replace the bathroom spigot if I feel like it, they're cheap and the diverter is simply a plug at the end of the spout (it works fine). I'll keep your advice in mind though, if there is anything behind the wall that could be replaced, I'll look into when I do that but I know the visual stuff on the outside looks OK to me.

Moving the drain isn't too bad, as my basement is unfinished. I can see the subfloor under the tub and the PVC from the drain, I'm sure if I have to move it, I don't have to remove the ceiling or whatever... I hope that it's plug and play though. I have 1 bathroom in my house so once I start hacking the bathtub out, I may be jumping in my lake to take a bath... Stealth bathing... hahaha, scare the neighbors...

Mort: If I ever really fix up the shack, I'm going to have to call it something else.. maybe the abode... Shack might just get fixed up a bit. Hallway looks nice, still could use some moldings (moldings are expensive!!!) bedroom could use some nice touches.. carpet could be replaced... the list goes on. need new siding....

Actually, when I replaced my bathroom vanity, the downpipe didn't match exactly where the old plumbing was but I found one can buy a flexible drain and I used that. It wasn't off by much but it was off by like an inch or so... I guess bathtubs aren't similar though, as my drain pretty much is angled towards my main septic line out, with the required venting and P thing of course.
