Re: My xa1 declared dead and unfixable by Toshiba.
Sorry to hear that. I mean XA1 is the "flagship" model (I have XE1, which is the same in Europe) after all..
So if e.g. my player breaks, it´s probably "game over" for me. I don´t have plans to get any "back-up" players etc.
So sometimes the question rises; Should I just sell my 50-60 HD DVDs that I have NOW when people still pay some money from them..? Makes me wonder.

As stated by Cees, use it wisely, go Blu Ray with it. 800.00 is more than enough to get a really good BD player with some movies. As to the 33 HD-DVD movies you have, If you can find a Walmart that still have the A3 or a Circuit City that has the A35, pick it up for the discounted price and keep your movies. As far as I'm concern high def is high def. Enjoy it. If you do decide to sell you HD-DVDs, you won't have too much of a problem selling them. Of course not what you paid for it but that's the other factor to take into consideration in regards to keeping or selling your movies.
I don't know how well BD does the upscaling thing with standard DVDs but I have to give Toshiba serious props in reference to how they upconvert standard DVD's as you know. This whole thing just might be a blessing in disguise, you paid a pretty penny to jump in to the format, it breaks, can't be fixed, a possible buy out option all because you paid the extra 40.00, finally you can pick up a HD-DVD player for less than 80.00 bucks. Sounds like a blessing too me.

I'm encouraged by your comments about the Sammy, since it's now selling here for under $500, plus I have my $50 gift card forthcoming from Best Buy. I still love my A30 though.

well in spite of what Dottie said to me, i ended up with a refurbished xa1.
this is very disappointing after expecting a xa2 as replacement as per Dottie.
i guess i'll call her tomorrow to find out what happened.

Whoa, how to handle that?

On the one hand, your machine broke after use, but you purchased the extended service plan which to my understanding entitles you to a new player equal to the player they can't fix, then they want to give you a refurbished player. Sounds to me they are not honoring the agreement you paid for. I don't care what anyone says, Toshiba has to have a new player somewhere, clearly they should be able to send you a new player and not a refurbished one.
Not knocking refurbished...well...based on your situation and if I was in your shoes, I wouldn't accept it. What sucks is that I was certainly excited for you and this is a let down.

Re: My xa1 declared dead and unfixable by Toshiba.
As mentioned earlier, I find it hard to believe that Toshiba can't get a new player to you. I wouild take this to the top as quickly as possible, no more dealing those service guys that answers the phone. Get the name of the president of Toshiba, contact him by phone, email or just regular mail and put the complete blame on them. You purchased an agreement, then they indicate that the policy of the agreement has changed, then to top it off, they pushed a format that died abruptly, you want some satisfaction somewhere and a new player is that satisfaction.
It's easy for someone else to say move on when it's not effecting them in anyway. But putting my self in your shoes and this is the only thing I can come up with, frustration, betrayed and let down.

You bought an XA1, you've got an XA1. If it were anything less than that I'd see your problem but as is I don't see what the fuss is about. It makes complete sense that their replacement polices would change once manufacturing of new players was stopped.

Yes but this was policy from two years ago, and things were very different then. It's unrealistic to think Toshiba would, or even could, maintain new player replacements when they no longer manufacture new players. With a finite amount of stock they need to act accordingly to maintain the best interests of all their customers for the years to come.
