Inexpensive satellite speakers

I am finishing up a basement theater that includes wiring for up to 7.1 sound. My current receiver only supports 5.1, and I'd like to find some affordable speakers (satellite) that I can mount to my ceiling. While I enjoy good audio quality, the space setup wont give me the benefit that better speakers provide (wall angles, speaker placement etc)... So I am not worried about purchasing the best speakers available.. just affordable.
Anyone have suggestions on package or single purchase speakers? I looked at Bose, but I'd like the ability to buy additional speakers when I move to a 7.1 receiver.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum, Casey!

"Affordable" - that doesn't tell us much. After all, what's "affordable" to a guy driving a Porsche isn't the same as what's "affordable" to a guy driving a Honda, know what I mean? What's your budget?

Re: Inexpensive satellite speakers

Yup. Agreed: the first step is always "decide how much you want to spend." I'd say that Bose is not affordable, since you can easily get the same or better quality for much less.

Affordable now versus affordable later is another question. I built my speaker collection over a four-year period. I started with L, R and a sub. Later I added a center, and later replaced it with something better. Finally, I replaced some old small monitor speakers with a better set for my surrounds. The small monitors will be installed for the back channels when I get around to it.

Re: Inexpensive satellite speakers

I'm not sure what you mean by "mount to the ceiling" either. Do you want in wall/in ceiling speakers or small bookshelf type speakers that can be attached to a wall.

For a truly budget friendly speaker, I don't think you can do much better than the Polk R150 for $50/pair. They clearly benefit from a subwoofer, but I think they sound pretty decent, especially for the money. The Polk RTi38s in my dedicate room retailed for right at $400/pair when new, but I'd be hard pressed to say they're 8x better than the R150s in my living room system. YMMV.
