DVD tray closed and movie started!

No warning from Stockholm, no menu. It was like a laser disc.

Watched Clint Eastwood's True Crime (1999) last night and was really surprise that, after the WB logo, the film commenced. Are there many other discs that do this?
After the film, the international threats began, then the menu. There are extras, including a Diana Krall video.
I wish this was the norm.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

A lot of early DVDs, particularly Warner are this way, as I recall. One in particular I know of is Body Snatchers, but I'm sure there are many others.

They flutter behind you, your possible pasts.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

Yeah, the early Warner Batman (and sequels) flipper discs, U.S. Marshals, the non-SE Fugitive, and many more Warners as mentioned.

Warner is doing this on many of their BluRays too including "The Cowboys", "Deliverance" & others.

They should be commended for it. Every feature film DVD should be authored this way.

I mean really....enough is enough with the stupid warnings, copyright infringements, Stockholm warnings, the "we might not agree with that the commentary" disclaimer and more.

Can you imagine if every time you wanted to listen to a CD or read a book, we had to subject ourselves to this garbage?

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

Slight correction: Warner does it with ALL their Hi-Def releases, not just few.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

What bugs me is disks with all the unskippable junk at the start, FBI warnings etc... Then it goes to a menu, and if you're not there to prevent it, it starts playing anyway after a couple of loops on the menu.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

That would be current Warner discs. FTR, on Warner HD titles, you do get the FBI warning before the movie starts.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

What about the new editions of "Grease" and "Airplane!" (and I imagine other new Paramount releases) that FORCE you to sit through inane movie trailers (you can't skip them-you can only FF thru them). I could sort of understand if these were rental discs, but these are movies I BOUGHT, NOT rented and I resent paying for a movie and still have the movie companies intrude on my movie-watching.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

I Walk the Line (the Frankenhiemer film with Gregory Peck, not the Cash biopic) doesn't have a menu screen on the disc. I assume this was an authoring error? See here.

Which is annoying because the movie defaults to the Dolby Digital track, not the TrueHD or PCM tracks. I'd much rather have a menu pop up where I can choose the audio I want.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

you can bring up the menu immediately at the start of every WB br while the movie continues and switch audio.

i can do it on the ps3 just by hitting the audio button without using the menu.

Re: DVD tray closed and movie started!

Sony is--by far--the worst offender. Not only do they have an infinite number of unskippable warning/disclaimer screens that play before the movie starts but each of those infinite warnings/disclaimers are repeated in 3 different languages. That's infinity times three!

Another thing I find completely asinine is when you buy a bare-bones DVD that has no interviews and/or commentary yet they STILL make you sit through the "The views and opinions expressed in the interviews/and or commentary..." disclaimer nonsense.
