I need a new AVR to with my new TV

My kids decided that I needed a new TV and they selected a Hitachi P50X901. So now I need a new entertainment center and a new home theater amplifier. I need your help with the amp, please. I have been reading, taking notes and listening to sales people for several days now. The more I learn, the more afraid I am of selecting almost what I need or should have gotten.

All of my components are old school using composite connections (VCR, DVD, CD). My son will attach his laptop so we can use his component connections to watch a DVD in a higher rez.. The record player we still use from time to time does not necessarily have to get connected to this new amp. My cable box has HDMI, component and the other output ports (my carrier only delivers up to 1080i. This leaves my new TV, which according to my kids and the manual can do it all.

I would be grateful if you would suggest a few amplifiers (home theater AVR) that are low cost yet make the most of the TV’s potential.

One thing that I am concerned about is syncing the audio with the video. My current amp does not have HDMI or optical inputs. When I run the cable box to the TV using component connections the only audio source for the amp is the cable box. In this configuration, the audio shows up before the video. Some cleaver advice givers kiddingly suggest increasing the viewing distance and / or the cable lengths to speakers. I can not source the audio from the TV because HDCP rules apparently force the manufacture to disable these ports when configured the way I am. A Hitachi person told me that the optical out from the TV should be hot and in sync with the video, but that remains to be seen.

So please suggest some amps to consider. So I can learn from you, perhaps you can tell me why you suggested he amp? At the very least, perhaps you can tell me what my new amp should have and what it should not have?

Thank you,
Mike (Buffalo, NY)

Contact a moderator and ask him to move this question to the Receivers/Amps/Separates section. This section of the forum is for satellite receivers, cable boxes, DVD players, etc. (a/v sources).

What kind of budget range do you have? Are you wanting to have phono inputs? Do you need HDMI inputs? Are you mostly going to be using component?

Re: I need a new AVR to with my new TV

I'd prefer to stay as inexpensive as possible, I do not have an approved budget yet. For discussion sake lets say under $400. The phono inputs are something I'd like to have, but not a requirement (I am thinking that I should copy the LPs to CD or DVD. The only source I have now that can deliver any HD is my cable box. The box can deliver upto 1080i. All of my other sources are old school as I mentioned. That is, they all use composit connections or coax. This new TV also forced me to buy a new entertainment center and most likely a new rug. I'd like to have at least two HDMI inputs just in case my cable box goes to 1080p or I get some other new HD source.
