Indirect Lighting Options

I'm starting a redesign of my home theater. I probably won't be able to start the project immediately but I wanted to start pulling things together and doing my research.

One area I know nothing about are the different options available for indirect lighting. I've seen some pretty cool stuff on TV shows that included some sort of glowing tape-like stuff, rope lights, etc.

What do most people use to put some indirect light in the ceiling under a valance? What about for lighting stairs and hallways along the floor?

Howdy!

A quick search on the 'net reveals hundreds of lighting options. A good brick-and-mortar lighting store will have examples of many to look at, and dozens of catalogs for more.

When you say "indirect lighting" you specifically mean lights that can not be seen, but which reflect light from some other surface (wall, ceiling) and then the glow lights the room. Rope lights aren't indeirect unless you hide them behind something - for instance, a valance.

I would steer clear of the "tape" lights. Those are usually electroluminescent panels, and they fade over a few years. Replacing them can be a major pain.

You can do some terrific lighting with rope lights strung into a groove carved in the underside of a bannister, or tucked into/behind a piece of molding on the wall. There are fiberoptic lighting systems that rely on "side glow" where you pump light into one end of a thick fiber, and light glows along the whole length of the fiber. With it you can outline stairs, poster frames, or whatever.

My big suggestion then, is to just poke around and see!
