150hp outboard motor purchase help?

Hello friends;

I have recently decided I want to upgrade my boat motor to the max the boat can take - which is 150HP. A friend of my told me to go with a Yamaha 150 because he is convinced it is the best ever. However, the dealership where I have a good relationship wants to set me up with a 150HP Evinrude 2-stroke. They are offering it for about $11,000 with the trade in of my nearly new Merc 90 2-stroke. (fuel injected)

I've looked online for price/quality comparisons and come up completely empty! I tried google and yahoo and found next to nothing. I have no way to compare price, features, reliability or anything else.

For such a large purchase I want to do my homework. I am quite surprized that there is not an abundance of info on this topic.

Does anyone here have any suggestions - either on the motors or where I can get competitive info about them?

edit: My brother in law suggested outboards.com but all I can find is info direct form the manufacturers, nothing from an unbiased source comparing any outboard motors. From what I've seen the Etec looks appealing but I can't find pricing on it. I found some pricing on Honda and Yamaha motors. If that pricing carries forward then it would seem that the price for the motor they are offering is fair but they are hozing me on the trade in for the merc 90 - which seems to retail for around $7k new... They seem to be offering essentially zero.

here is an interesting video I saw comparing the 2-stroke etec to a 4 stroke ; http://www.warnersdock.com/2070.wmv

this one is even more motivating, and it is a etec vs honda 4 stroke; YouTube - Evinrude E-TEC Sinks Yamaha 4-Stroke

but still nothing on cost...

Re: 150hp outboard motor purchase help?

Can't offer much of a valid opinion, but my gut says Yamaha. Got a bud with an older Evinrude which runs like a top (I believe a 150), but there is a reason Grady-White designs it's boats for Yamaha. The endurance and sound would overcome the weight and performance factors, imho.

What kind of boat and what activities ? (i.e. - cruising, skiing, offshore fishing, etc) ?

Re: 150hp outboard motor purchase help?

I have been looking at the difference in performance between a 150 and my 90. I cruise around 10 knots now. I expect the 150 to push me around 15 knots. I am struggling to decide if it it worth $11 for 5 knots higher cruise speed... What do you think?

edit - aww hell. I bought it.

Congrats - boating season is almost underway ! What kind of boat ?

Don't fret too much about the 11k... at least you're getting an extra 5 knots. A buddy upgraded his Albin 28 from gas to diesel. 40k later he gained about 4 knots.

Re: 150hp outboard motor purchase help?

I'm not pushing anything so nice as an Albin (would owners be called Albinos?) Here is my money hole; 2008 PARTY CRUISER® 32 Regency Edition Description Sun Tracker Regency Pontoons She is perfect for my needs; taking my family and friends out to chase dolphins, explore beaches and camp. We don't go out into the gulf - we just stay in the harbor and this side of the islands. She can handle 12-14 people comfortably - but the most I've had so far is 9.

I figured at some point I'd upgrade to the 150, so it may as well be now. The merc was a pos. I'm looking forward to seeing how different she is with 150 horses.
