I don't see how that would cut costs unless they replace each of the three missing episodes with an hour of dead air!

40% Ben Katz + 30% Bobby Hill (Texas) + 20% Monica Geller + 10% William Dent. (Wardrobe by George Costanza)

But that's exactly what they'll do - only instead of being honest and calling it dead air, they give it a title such as 'gardening programme', 'cookery programme', 'quiz show' etc. They're a lot cheaper to make than good quality drama.

Back on thread - hadn't seen that particular trailer before. Excellent!

Re: Doctor Who Season 4

I just watched "Forest of the Dead" and had a few thoughts.

(Sorry if I bring up something that has been discussed, but I read this thread only as far as I dare in order to avoid spoilers.)

* I noticed that the music score we heard was also heard by Cal amplified through the television set. Does that mean that the characters themselves could hear the score? It was a very jarring (but in a good way) moment when the POV would transition from the Library to the Cal's living room and the action -- along with the music score -- continued on her television uninterrupted. It's almost as if it really were a TV show. I just know the writers/producers had a fun time messing with our heads on that one.

* We also know why the Doctor gave the Professor the screwdriver -- so he could save her in the computer. That was a very gratifying moment when he realized his purpose in giving her the screwdriver.

* We also know why the Doctor told her his true name. I thought we would have to wait until 2010 or later to learn what she whispered in his ear (okay, we still don't know exactly what she said, but we do know she whispered his true name), and the explanation was dramatic and satisfying. Usually things like that never live up to their hype, and when the "big secret" is revealed, the viewer is disappointed. But not this time. We learn that it was his name he tells her in his future, and his reason for doing so was gut-wrenchingly compelling in a time-loop fashion that Moffat does so well.

Great episode full of rapid-fire (and satisfying) reveals and great dramatic moments.

Re: The Stolen Earth

OH MY GOSH!

The entire episode, I was on the edge of my seat! I loved the "Children of Time." I loved the blast from the past with whom we are familiar (and I'm not talking about Rose). Next Saturday can not come quick enough. Best cliffhanger ever!

Of course, I do expect to be slightly disappointed by the resolution, but wow what a ride.

For those who don't know, actively avoid spoilers if you can.

For me, this episode went to 11!

The Stolen Earth was a mix of the great and the awful for me.

I'll spoilerize the rest for our US friends who've yet to see it. :-)

Yes, great cliffhanger. But IMHO nothing beats Androzani 3.

Some bits were so very cringeworthy though. I didn't enjoy the Torchwood/SJA crossovers. I haven't been following those series (although I watched s1 of Torchwood), and I felt those bits were silly. They're aimed at different audiences anyway. For instance: that Mr Smith computer was embarrassing.

A lot of the dialogue was dreadfully clichéd. Dark Lord? Voldermort's on-loan from Harry Potter???

The final, dramatic, romantic, slow-mo run? Ew. Next time, Rose: teleport closer!

Martha, meanwhile, has been given a lot of techo-crap to deal with, including an RTD-special Deus Ex Machina device, and a scary teleport device to take her to her mum's (oh, come on!).

Wonderful to see Penelope Winton back as ex-PM Harriet Jones, but when did she ever become a computer-wizard capable of writing software that Davros and the Daleks couldn't detect? Her "extermination" was off-screen, so hopefully she'll be back next week.

All phones calling the doctor at once? Erm, wouldn't that equal a lot of "engaged" tones? Silly.

Yikes, I'm being too negative!! New Davros: fantastic. Daleks: back to their best. Crazy-prophet Dalek: best ever. Drums over close-up of Donna: very interesting! Wilf (Bernard Cribbins): superb, as always ("Wanna swap?" - RTD's funniest line).

Final scene: well, they better follow through, if only for one episode before the Deus Ex Machina ending, or I'll be disappointed!

Re: Doctor Who Season 4

Just finished watching "The Stolen Earth." Incredible, exciting, and a totally unexpected twist at the end.

Who is Rose working with? It was obvious in this episode that someone is actually transporting her from one place to another. Micky, maybe?

One of my methods to become debt-free. Thanks, Dave Ramsey!

Loved Stolen especially because of the cross overs. A Doctor Who fanboy dream. I like how they weren't just cameos but were all featured in the story.
Was that two heartbeats that Donna was hearing on the stairs?

Can't wait until next week.

Most likely she's still working for Torchwood in the alternate Universe. She even called them when she needed to teleport closer to the Doctor.

David has been shown filming the Christmas special so he is not going anywhere. My guess is that he is split into Two since we keep seeing that hand of his in the water container.

Re: Journey's End

It WAS a bit much...but not necessarily in a bad way. RTD clearly wanted a set of episodes where he could put every single last idea he ever wanted to see in Doctor Who...and that is what he did.

For all the stuff I didn't like about the episode (cough)the deus ex machina(cough) of the biometacrisis, there was the emotional arc of Donna-DoctorDonna-donna. It was, quite frankly, the most emotionally charged ending for New Who for me. I think I liked it.

Although I felt cheated with the regeneration resolution, I did like the two and a half doctors aspect of this episode. The DoctorDonna playing havoc with the Daleks was quite possibly the funniest thing I will see this entire summer. The semi-trekesque technobabble was spot on perfect as well.

Quite frankly, I'm very bummed that Donna will not be able to make a return to the Whoniverse. This time, I really feel it is final (unlike a certain ex-pop star).

I can take or leave the Cybermen, so I'm not looking as forward to Christmas as I normally would. The cyberwraiths sound interesting though. Only time or the Doctor will tell.

Bottom-line, I will miss RTD as he has stated that he will never write for Doctor Who again after the specials.
Bring on 2010!

Extermenieran!
^^^ That was the best bit. Bad German but so, so funny!

Davros, excellent.
Wilf, excellent.
Donna's Tennant impression, excellent.
Donna ending (despite being a stupid amnesia plot thing), excellent.

Cliffhanger resolution, rubbish.
Sarah-Jane, underused.
Deus Ex Machina, sigh.
Rose/Doctor2 ending, ho-hum. Undecided about that.
Martha's plan, stupidest ever.
Supreme Dalek resolution, rubbish.
I'm not even going to begin trying to decipher the plot and its related holes.

But I'm sure the 7-year-olds in the audience LOVED every second! Lots of cool stuff, no real depth. 3/5 for me.

(Not looking forward to the new Cybermen either.)

Sad that

Donna's story had to end like it did with her forgetting everything and going back to the Ordinary life that she had before she met the Doctor. To forget all she did on her travels was a gip but loved how they used all the companions and how Davros remember SJS.

Re: Doctor Who Season 4

Anyone else spot the gaping hole in the plot?

Warning Spoiler! Click to show
At the end of the episode, Donna has been away from her usual life for a year or so. She phones a friend and starts talking as if they'd only seen each other the day before. Okay, that's logical from Donna's point of view - as far as she's concerned, it was yesterday. But it's also clear from the context of the conversation that the friend on the other end of the phone is acting like she and Donna had recently met and had shared reference points of recent drinking bouts, boyfriends, etc. What did the Doctor do? Change Donna's personal timeline? But if he did that, then he'd have no need to explain things to mum and grandpa. It would have been far more logical and arguably a better ending if Donna had woken up in a hosptial bed having supposedly been in a coma following an accident that killed her fiance, with various members of the team playing the parts of the hospital staff.

It's funny how so many who initially despised the Donna companion are now going to miss her.

Andrew,

No, don't even *begin* looking for plot-holes in that script!!

Here's another big one: if the Daleks can instantly teleport Martha and the others, why do they even need to go down to Earth in the first place? Why can't they instantly teleport Doctor 2 away when he arrives? Why can't they instantly beam the TARDIS into the core?
If their death beam destroys matter, why bother testing it on living matter? Don't they know it already works, if stars from Rose's adopted universe have been disappearing?
et cetera!

Re: Doctor Who Season 4

Sorry to derail this discussion, but could someone answer a question about "Forest of the Dead"? I watched the episode, but obviously not close enough because I don't know how they ultimately beat the shadows (can't remember their name). I know that the Doctor threatened them, and knowing (or looking up) who he was, they backed down, but after that it's unclear as to what the final resolution was.

The look (or is it a non-look?) on the Doctor's face in The Stolen Earth when the other voice came online was priceless. He looked like he'd seen a ghost...oh wait...LOL! I've seen Journey's End already too. Decent wrap up. Can't wait for Christmas!

I see the garage, but I don't saw the garage. You are speaking incorrectly. You are moidering the king's English! Et cetera! See, saw, see...

Did anyone catch the short they did for the BBC Proms? A little mini episode called The Music of the Spheres.

No spoilers for the end of the season, mind you - so it's completely safe. Just a short, kind of goofy scene for the kids.

I only just now had an opportunity to view it (courtesy of my DVR).

Super ep! Great resolution to the first season "Bad Wolf" arc. Come to think of it, it practically touched every arc from the first four seasons!

When I heard that all the companions would be back for this episode, I wondered about K-9, so I let out a little "whoop!" at his appearance.

And I think we *all know* what the half-human Doctor whispered into Rose's ear, right?
