| Sony has announced today that a new firmware update will arrive for the PS3 later this month. Version 2.20 will add support for Blu-Ray Live (profile 2.0) features such as the ability to download extra content like bonus scenes, ringtones and subtitles. Blu-Ray Live also allows interactive movie-based games to communicate over the internet -- effectively adding online multiplayer support. Other features found in firmware v2.20 include: "Resume play" will enable PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed. (BD-J format discs are not supported) "Audio Output Device" will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3. PS3's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's view speed will be improved. DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable. "Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added as an AV setting in the control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback. (BD discs recorded with BDMV format are not supported) The update will be released sometime "in late March." |

Rumor has it that DTS-MA internal decoding will never be possible due to hardware limitations. They simply did not include the hardware necessary for internal decoding of DTS-MA and it can't be done by software.

That's the first I have heard of that rumor.
Are you sure you aren't mixing that up with the fact that the hardware is limited and will never be able to use BITSTREAM with either new format? It was officially announced by Sony that DTS-MA would be supported in a future update.
Guess what...
Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
My understanding was the same as Adam's - that DTS-MA streaming was not possible due to an early variant of HDMI 1.3 which the PS3 uses and will not stream that codec. In the end it doesn't really matter for me because I'm going to have to update an expensive piece of hardware regardless. Either my NAD T763 receiver (which doesn't decode the HD formats) or my PS3 (which, even if it does decode it, it doesn't have 5.1 outs and my T763 can't do PCM 5.1 over coaxial/optical).
So if I keep my receiver, I'm going to have to buy the new Sony or Panasonic BD player coming out this spring/summer.

If you read the forums and the blogs, people go back and forth over both internal decoding and bitstream. Sony is mute about either, so any firm stance is rumor and/or speculation.

The PS3 has more than ample processing power to decode DTS MA internally, which NO OTHER PLAYER DOES at this point. Please don't regurgitate the absolutely 100% inaccurate info that it is incapable of decoding it.
Don't expect the update until AFTER the Sony and Panasonic players with internal decoding hit the market this summer. I'd say mid to late summer. Insiders have virtually guaranteed it is coming. The CEs need features to tout to sell their new elite players and if the PS3 beat them to market with everything while undercutting the price they wouldn't be happy. Why do you think all the CE's except Toshiba backed Blu-ray? They wanted to make money, and Sony and the BDA have obviously guaranteed their ability. After the Chinese players ruined the DVD market for them, they wouldn't want the PS3 doing the same thing for HD.
The PS3 is a bargain as the most full-featured and reliable BD hardware available. The budget price just means you have to wait a little longer for some things, and really they've been very short waits. Most people don't even remember when it was updated to upscale DVDs, add 24 Hz processing, add forced 24 Hz processing... We got 1.1 fast. Not that much of a wait for 2.0. It probably won't be much of a wait for DTS HD MA either once there are other decoding players out there.
My midis bring all the Force to the yard; my midis are better than yours!

| It's only the bitstreaming aspect that's rumored to be limited by hardware, and even that isn't an absolute certainty. |

So can either of you provide a link to back up your claim that DTS-MA can't be decoded in software?

Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
I stream all of my video files to the PS3, and when streaming there is no file size limit, only when reading from the HD. So I can't really comment there, but I can tell you that WMV support has been extended, several files that previously wouldn't play do just fine now.If you're just planning on putting your T2 disc in your PS3, I promise you it's not going to work. You'll never get past all the DRM and you had to install a specific player to do it, blah blah blah. Hell, I can't even play it on my PC's anymore because it doesn't run under XP64 or Vista.

Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
My PS3 arrived yesterday (a few days earlier than expected; thanks Dell!), and the first thing that happened after setting it up was the automatic update to 2.20/Profile 2.0. Yay!And I've gotta say--- after spending a couple of hours with it last night, this thing kicks my other BD player's ASS (Sony BDP-S300).

Tried testing this with a SD-DVD. The resume worked if you turned off the system but did not remove the disc. But when I removed the disc and put it back in, it did not resume. Is there anything else I need to do to get this to work?

Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
"Resume Play" seems to work with certain SD-DVDs. For example, I tried it with Flushed Away but it would not resume where I left off. I tried Wings: Season 6 and it worked.Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March

I've had my PS3 for almost 2 months now and until yesterday I didn't even know about the "streaming media" feature. A buddy of mine who also has a PS3 was telling me how great it was to stream all the audio and video files from his PC to his PS3 and couldn't believe I hadn't explored that capability yet. Guess I need to spend some extra time getting to know my PS3 a little better.

Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
I hope this is the right place to post, since it looks like this discussion is about the latest update. I have noticed three things since mine downloaded:(1) Disc loading time is longer-not by much, but it is noticeable.
(2) My "Elton John-60" playback shows additional graphics for each tune on the song selection pop-up menu. (At least I don't remember seeing them before.) I thought this was interesting.
(3) My "Shakira-Oral Fixation Tour" freezes and skips. It never did that before. I am thinking about contacting Sony, since they issued this disc.
(Can anyone tell me the best place to go to report this? I don't think it is the disc, though.)
Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
Ok, I guess it's been about a week and a half since I installed the update. Is is just me, or does the Resume function work completely at random? I know it supposedly does not work for BD-J discs. But I am using SD-DVDs and even the same disc from time to time only seems to resume randomly.STOP HIM! He's supposed to die!
Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
So far, the resume has worked perfectly for me with every sDVD and Blu-ray that I've used it with.Re: BD Live coming to PS3 in late March
Does anyone know how long the resume function operates for?In other words, if I watch a movie to the end..press stop at the credits, and then watch it again in a couple years...is it going to start up at the credits?
Just curious if there's a time limit....
