The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

I have changed the grid to reflect the amazon price on I Am Legend BD.

I have also jumped on that price! Thanks to the "two great minds!"

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

BSG Season 3 for me, and I'm gonna pick up 101 Dalmatians for $15 at BB since I missed out on release week.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 3-18-2008

That Target B1G1 is awfully tempting, but I don't know if I can afford it. Probably end up getting 101 Dalmatians from BB if they sent me a $5 coupon.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 3-18-2008

Another Weekly Roundup suggestion.

Let me start off by saying, I realize this idea may be too much work. If so, I ask you all not to slam me over this.

But it would be cool if the titles in the grids were links to IMDB or some other source that gives a little synopsis of the movie, a pic of the DVD or Poster, etc. I see many titles that I don't recognize, but later find out that was a movie I was interested in, just didn't know the title. You know, you see a trailer at the movies, think, "hey I wanna see that", then you don't remember the title name.

Anyway, it'd be great if you could do that Mike. But totally understandable if that was too much for you.

Everyone still appreciates all your work putting the round up together!

Dang! I just bought 3:10 to Yuma at BJ's for 24.99 yesterday! Thankfully its not opened yet. I need to find something to pair it with at Target's B1G1 sale! Trouble is... the rest of the pickin's are pretty slim!

Quick correction heads-up, Enchanted on Blu-ray is advertised in this weeks ad as $24.99 at Circuit City, not $34.99.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 3-18-2008

Well ... This is the first week that I'm going to have to purchase the same title on both DVD and Blu-ray.

I still don't own a Blu-ray deck (waiting on the new Sony models); but I *know* I'm going to need "Enchanted" on Blu-ray when I do acquire the player. So I'm purchasing the title on both formats on Tuesday, and will pass the DVD down to my daughter for her portable DVD player after I go Blu.

Also getting BSG: S3 on DVD and Bionic Woman this week. (I liked the production values on the latter.)

Re: Weekly RoundUp 3-18-2008

Thanks as always Mike & Patrick for the Weekly RoundUp.

I pre-ordered Enchanted from Best Buy a few weeks ago when they had a Disney $10 off promotion on another title.

I also missed 101 Dalmatians a couple of weeks ago, so it's nice to see the $15 price at Best Buy, and I'll pick that up as well.

I'll probably rent Atonement.

I was going to get I Am Legend on SD-DVD at Best Buy with a PM to Circuit City, until I saw the posts by TonyD and RickER for the Blu-ray pricing at Amazon. I just pre-ordered mine. Thanks guys!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 3-18-2008

I think there's more people buying Enchanted than I Am Legend.

I'll just be using Target's buy one, get one Blu Ray sale to get Ratatouille and The Simpsons Movie. And I'll pick up Married... With Children: Season Eight when it goes on sale for $20 in a few months.

Thanks for the prices, guys!

Thanks for the prices, guys.

Getting I Am Legend Blu and Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm Show this week.
And I may double-dip on the SE of Pride of the Yankees. I'll wait for a sale for MWC S8.

I'd also like to get Simpsons Movie BD in Target's BOGO, but nothing else in the sale interests me (that I don't already own).

The DVD of Enchanted reportedly has a $10 coupon for the Blu-ray. So don't buy them at the same time and you'll get $10 off the Blu, assuming you buy at a B&M.
Does anyone even click on these "My Collection" links?

But it would be cool if the titles in the grids were links to IMDB or some other source that gives a little synopsis of the movie, a pic of the DVD or Poster, etc. I see many titles that I don't recognize, but later find out that was a movie I was interested in, just didn't know the title. You know, you see a trailer at the movies, think, "hey I wanna see that", then you don't remember the title name.

Anyway, it'd be great if you could do that Mike. But totally understandable if that was too much for you.

Everyone still appreciates all your work putting the round up together!

Hey, John! Don't be worried about getting slammed. I am always in favor of any input into the RoundUp.

I remember when I switched-over from the old grid format (for the prices) to the table format (seen above) a lot of people offered suggestions like making the lowest price for each title a different color so it stands out.

Unfortunately, while the ideas you offered would be a huge step forward for the RoundUp, they would also be incredibly time-consuming. Even the color-coding would be an extra added step that would just make the process longer for me albeit prettier-to-look-at and easier-to-read.

I'm afraid that adding the links and code to the titles in the table would just take more of my time and also make the coding within the table itself that much harder for me to work with. I guess the best advice I can give is to cut-and-paste the titles into a Google or IMDB search if a title catches your eye or raises a question. That's one of the reasons I include so many titles in the table: to let people know about some of the more interesting titles out there or maybe let them know about a movie that was a long-ago favorite.

===================================

I'm going to take this as an opportunity to give you folks a little insight into what goes into putting one of these together.

Quote:
First, I've got to research and compile a list of each week's new releases (and I've yet to find one comprehensive list which seems to "get 'em all!"). Keep in mind I'm also exercising editorial judgment by deciding which titles make the RoundUp and which do not. You guys may not realize that most weeks there might be 300-400+ new titles released! That's a lot to look at and wade through.

Second, I go through each retailer's website copying down each price for each release. And the sites do not all make this an easy task. For example, amazon does NOT allow for an alphabetized list search of each week's new releases!

Third, I need to build the table...which is pretty basic data entry...by using a template I have built. But, nevertheless, time-consuming. There are also issues with vb code needing to be cleaned-up before the tables are ready. After the table's done, I need to take care of odds-and-ends like listing the collection titles, Criterions, etc.

Fourth, I need to find the on-line photos for the "Features" section and build that portion of the RoundUp.

Fifth, I then need to type up the flyer information for the "Specials" section. And I won't even go into the actual driving around it takes some weeks to secure the flyers in a "timely" fashion.

And, finally, there's the actual posting at Midnight ET...which is the earliest that the powers-that-be at the HTF want the flyer info posted. There have been problems with angry retailers at the site many years ago which the owners do not want repeated. In fact, lawsuits were filed recently at another DVD site for just such early postings. [Patrick Sun has often been a help to me by posting at the witching hour when I've been unavailable. And while I always appreciate Patrick's willingness to help...those instances always mean my deadline is pushed-up even earlier than usual.]

And this is 52 weeks a year. IIRC, the last time I missed any RoundUps I was in intensive care in the hospital!

And did I mention proof-reading? I hate to be sloppy!

So there you have it. I've been giving it a fair amount of thought lately wondering if this is a foolish exercise. On the one hand, I really like putting the thing together each week. Dave Lambert used to say that he started putting it together because he was doing it for himself each week anyway. He felt he might as well share his work with others. If anyone looks back at those early RoundUps, you'll see that Dave pretty much did the research for a much smaller number of titles--the ones he was interested in and maybe a few other high-profile titles. I thought it would be cool to expand the list to titles that had a wide-range of interest among the HTF membership...but at the same time trying to keep it manageable. I still wrestle with children's titles and find myself making conflicting decisions about which ones to include on a week-by-week basis.

But, on the other hand, I realize that the posting of this RoundUp takes a few hours out of my schedule each week. Even though I've got forms and templates and can do it with my eyes closed...there is still a fair amount of research time and typing which cannot be shortened. Like anyone else, my free time is precious to me. In fact, I find myself constantly complaining while on the HTF about how long my queue of unwatched movies has become. If I dedicated myself to watching films in the time it takes to put the RoundUp together, I might be able to start putting a sizeable dent into my list!

While I love being "in the know" about DVD titles and prices (boy, I sure can wow the friends and family sometimes with my "insider's knowledge!"), it is a rare week that I purchase more than one or two new releases, if any.

Please understand that I am not unloading right now to complain. It is simply something that I have been mulling over internally and John's rather innocent question (which he is probably now regretting asking! ) has prompted me to "put pen to paper" and try to sort some of it out--in a cathartic sort of way.

I suppose some of you readers may feel like Beaver Cleaver as he used to wonder why his dad always gave such long answers to such short questions.

Bottom line: I have been thinking over ways to cut back my Roundup workload without eliminating the thing altogether--maybe less titles? Maybe a re-working of the format? I dunno.

But I have always welcomed feedback from you guys. If any of you think you've got some ideas, I'd love to hear them.

The lack of Southland Tales on Blu-Ray is disheartening, but I've gotta' pick it up anyway. Perhaps they'll release the original cut on the format later on.

Thanks for the info.

Mike,

We certainly appreciate all the work that you put into the Roundup every week. I know it's always the first piece of information that I look for when I hit this forum on a Sunday. It's just really *fantastic* to be able to go to one place and see not only all the major titles that are "streeting" this week, but also the prices that the retailers will be asking for the titles on Tuesday. The "on sale" information that Patrick provides is also invaluable.

To tell you the truth, I've often wondered how you guys have been able to find the time to do such a stupendous job on this each and every week. (And I also thought the same about David Lambert before you.)

Perhaps it's time to ask for some volunteers to come forward to help out with the Roundup. All of this work shouldn't have to be shouldered by just one or two individuals on a weekly basis. There probably needs to be a team of around 10 members working on this with some members specializing on just the research portion of the Roundup and others the presentation side. Perhaps the work could even be rotated among members on a weekly basis.

Speaking of the research: I can't even imagine how you guys are acquiring all the "flyer" info prior to Sunday morning! If this is a significant part of the work involved, perhaps that's one area that could be altered. Simply delay the report to mid-day Sunday (or Sunday night) before posting the Roundup. After all, the new titles can't be purchased until Tuesday anyway.

In any event, I'm sure that there's a good percentage of the membership here (not to mention site "guests") that consider the "Roundup" to be essential weekly reading. And I'm also sure that none of us thank you enough for the great job that you do on this every week. I, for one, have greatly appreciated it!

Joseph

Re: Weekly RoundUp 3-18-2008

Hey Mike, as I said before, totally understandable about that being too much additional work. Heck, you've got more than a full plate just doing what you do right now. This is pretty much what I figured, but I asked anyway, just on the off chance that you might have had a way to easily make that change.

As others have said, I totally appreciate all your hard work and always look forward to the Roundup on Sunday. Just wish my memory was better so some of the titles I'm not scratching my head as to what is that movie. But I do follow your suggestion for ones I think I might have an interest in, usually searching on IMDB.

Thanks again for all your hard work!

Re: Weekly RoundUp 3-18-2008

I'm conflicted, on one hand I want to finish of BSG on DVD, On the otherhand I know it's headed for Blu at Some point, but I think DVD will Win out since I started collecting them this way. Plus more than likely I'll just Encode them for my Apple TV and throw the Disks on the Shelf. Also good price on 101 Dalmations, I passed because I had thought I bought the oiginal disk, but after checking I don't have it so will probably pick it up. Good Price on what turned out to be a weak season of 24. But I think I might wait a bit longer on that. I find I have'nt really watched too many of my Serialized TV shows because your committed to watch the Entire season if you start...

I just wanted to add another note of appreciation for the work that goes into the roundup every week. It is always the first thing I check when looking for new releases.

Isn't it, though? Pretty was the main thing that movie had going for it (other than the surprising revelation that Seann William Scott actually can act). I'll pass and hope that Sony does a BD release around when The Box hits theaters.

So, Enchanted on Blu-ray, Justice League on HD DVD, and Funky Forest: The First Contact (two and a half hours of prime Japanese insanity) on DVD for me. Maybe Mulberry Street if it's got some extra features and any of the other After Dark titles wind up tempting me.
Jay's Movie Blog - A movie-viewing diary.
Transplanted Life: Sci-fi soap opera about a man placed in a new body, updated two or three times a week.
Trading Post Inn - Another gender-bending soap, with different collaborators writing different points of view.

"What? Since when was this an energy ball...

IIRC--there is a $10 coupon for NCFOM floating around somewhere...and IIRC Walmart currently has it for $25; I have read posts about other folks being able to buy it for $15+tax AC.

A scanned version of the Enchanted coupon is floating around too...so for those of you interested in only the BD version--if you can get BB or CC (hopefully Walmart too, if they'll have it tomorrow and offer it for $25) to accept a scanned-copy coupon...

Well, Tony...let's not start a panic!

I guess the point of my prior post was NOT to spark any sort of alarm...but sort of wonder aloud is anyone has thoughts about the RoundUp: which might include sections that are expendable. Like I said in that post, one of the places I've been thinking of cutting back is simply the number of titles I include each week.

Thanks to all for your show of support. It is--as always--much appreciated.

Joseph: Thank you for your post. There are some good, solid positive ideas included. Thanks for those.

One point you broach is the timeliness of the post. Maybe that's one I will take into serious consideration. There have been times when making the appointment to be at my computer at midnight has been quite difficult...and, at times, impossible.
