Just wondering if anyone can tell me why there isn't a release of this, alongside the standard def version, in a few weeks time. Thanks.

Re: The Mist

"The Weinstein Company" doesn´t release Blu-ray-titles at this point. But let´s hope that they´ll soon.

Read this thread:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/...company-2.html

Dutch-company "Dutch Filmworks" has "Mist" on their release-schedule (I believe), but you never know. It has released (on both Blu-ray/HD DVD) some good titles in Holland.

So if you really want "Mist" now, you´ve to get the SD DVD-version..

Re: The Mist

The two disc SE on standard def will also have Darabont's preferred black and white cut of the movie, along with what are supposed to be some really good features. This is gonna be a hard one for me, as I would prefer to rent and wait for the BD, but all stores around me and both online rental services have a bad habit of only renting out the single disc versions of movies.

I'll be honest, I haven't heard of anything about Darabonts preferred black and white cut... could you elaborate anymore on that? Thanks.

No spoilers, please. I haven´t seen the film. Thanks.

DVD Beaver: The Mist

Beware: there are some screen captures you may want to avoid if you haven't seen the film.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Damn it! I am officially intrigued enough with this film to go 'slumming' with the SD DVD release.

i have really enjoyed the previous 2 King films he has done and also liked
The Majestic.

i already have this at home and i'm toying with the idea of turning color down to watch it.

Re: The Mist

Well I have viewed the colour version and it's a fantastic film. I also have the B & W version too, which I am toying with to watch. On the introduction, FD says this the B & W is the definite version, a directors cut as it where, and he goes on to explain why he feels this. The DVD is fantastic - I'll admit it's a tough call wether to get this or wait maybe a year for the blu-ray... great extras 5/5!

I was thinking of doing the same thing (I assume I won't find the B&W version for rent). Isn't turning the color 'off' that basically what the DVD does anyway?

Re: The Mist

A struggle for me too. Loved the movie.

Ah who I am kidding - I'll end up getting the SD and BluRay versions!

Gee, Lou...I believed you. Okay. Well, no, I didn't really.

I knew you'd get them both, too!

Re: The Mist

This movie is fantastic, I just got the 2 disc and can't wait to watch it at home. It's just one of those that some people just couldn't handle in the theater.

The special features are extensive and FD introduces the black and white version (this was on aintitcool a month or two ago, too), apparently he wanted to release it like this but the studio nixed that. It's just the same movie in B&W, which IMO will be great, since it has an old horror movie feel in some scenes anyway.

Re: The Mist

I wish they didn't show the aliens or whatever they are on the commercial advertising the DVD. They certainly didn't show them before they released the movie in the theater. They also showing the undead in the DVD ads for I Am Legend. Why?

I agree on both of those counts, Dean. The BD of I Am Legend is on its way to me (as a blind buy). I feel like something's been taken away now that I've seen that DVD ad. The pre-theatrical release trailers of The Mist were extremely effective because you DIDN'T know "what was out there." Big advertising bungle, in my opinion.

Re: The Mist

After going happily Blu, with the desire to never look back, I find myself in the lamentable position of buying not just one SD disc this week (THE MIST) but two (LOST HIGHWAY). Last week, I had to settle for the SD of SOUTHLAND TALES. I'd pay through the nose for the days of exclusive SD releases to pass.

Re: The Mist

Considering the (lack of) box office return for The Mist, I'm not surprised that they changed their advertising strategy for the DVD.

Re: The Mist

Just watched this last night, it was fantastic and easily one of the best Horror films of the past 20 years. What a refreshing change of pace for a tired genre.

I'd love to pick this up if it were on BD but as for the DVD I'm still keeping to my "new films on High Def only" policy for now. I'll wait it out and if this doesn't get a BD release by this October I might just pick it up on SD, if I can get it cheap.

I agree on all counts. With respect to the ending...

I found it to be gut-wrenching, especially now that I am a father. It's the kind of movie that stays in your head for days afterwards.

I did breakdown and buy this on SD DVD because Lord only knows the The Weinstein Co. will begin releasing on Blu-ray Disc, and I can just see the B&W version getting the shaft if/when it is.

Re: The Mist

I bouqht this as a blind buy this week. I really liked it. I watched the BW version. The director said he was going for a cheap 60s movie feel. In the same vain as Night of the Living Dead. Well, to me it felt more like a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits. On the ending...

I was waiting for a TZ like ending. You know, the whole town is on another planet. I just had this feeling once he grabbed the gun off the hood of the car, that i knew what was going to happen, and i was right. I didnt HATE the ending. But, could never, ever, kill one of my kids. I would take a chance, thinking, we made it this far. Dad ultimately took the chicken shit way out, and he paid the price. He had ben so strong, and made the right choices, until this point. Now he would WISH that he was dead!

This movie, and The Decent, are two of my favorites in years. I will be watching it again soon!

Like you Paul, this is a rare movie in SD DVD buy. Usually i would just rent, wait for a Blu-ray. Like you, who knows when we will see it on Blu, and its been a light year for DVD, and Blu, for me anyway. So i figure, what the heck. Glad i got it.

Why? What exactly made you groan.

It was a brave choice and is an excellent in your face to the crap Hollywood ending that the recent I Am Legend is saddled with.

I loved it up until the end. As much as horror movies are supposed to be grim,

the way everyone just gives up when they run out of gas, to the point of suicide, was hard for me to believe after they've been so determined, and then, right away, gotcha! it's over!

It struck me as being a different cliché than the one that usually gets maligned, but still lame compared to how good what had come before was.

I've said it before, but watching this again reaffirms the fact that I think The Mist is the best horror movie in 20 years.

It's flawless in my eyes.

Made sense to me

The hopelessness of the situation more than explains their choice of suicide. Maybe you just weren't paying attention to what they saw during their drive, it seemed like the whole world was overtaken with the "mist" For all it looked and all they knew all their family and friends were spiderfood and they were the last people alive (aside from the idiots they left at the grocery store) in a world crawling with monsters from another dimension, out of gas in the middle of nowhere with nowhere to go. All human beings have a breaking point and from what they went through it's feasable that they reached theirs.

Having two small children of my own, it definitely resonates more for me than it would have 5 years ago.

I also thought it was brilliant the way they turned "the military saves the day" cliche on it's ear. This isn't a cop-out Jurassic Park 3 ending, the military saves the day after the guy just murdered 4 people (well intentioned, though ultimately unnecessary) including his own son. I guess the irony of that just washes over some people.

I don't know how some would consider the ending "lame". But whatever
to each their own, such is the uselessness of discussing conflicting views with movies on internet messageboards. You just can't make people see the light now matter how wrong they are.

Well, aside from my personal beliefs -

there is no situation that merits suicide, and the ending/preventing another's suffering justification for assisted suicide/murder is even more horrible
- I think it was just too quick and complete a change from what we've seen from this group before, and the gotcha ending just highlighted that.

Great up until then - really fantastic, I was ready to come out of the theater raving that this was one of the best movies in years - but that ending just sat wrong in every possible way it could sit wrong.
