Nelson's questions have yet to be answered.

5. While written, but not filmed or cut out from The Cage, Spock, Jose Tyler and another crew member are seen with injuries; bandages on the neck and hand and Spock's limp. What caused them and on what planet? Hint, Captain Pike discusses this with Dr. Boyce.

1. The American Continent Institute.
2. I think they crashed eighteen years ago.
3. That is the Columbia.
4. Mojave, California.
5. This was the fight that took place on Rigel 7. I believe that the guy with the spear and shield (and whom is badly in need of a dentist ) inflicted most of the damage.

Here are some questions to keep the ball rolling a bit.

From The Man Trap:

1) Who is responsible for saving Lt. Uhura's life?

2) How many people 'die' in this episode?

3) On what deck is Barnhart found dead?

Have fun!

Hey Scott, you got them all! Great job.

Those are great questions from The Man Trap. I'll have to cheat on some of them! I know the answers, but not exactly!

Yeah Lou, I always try to answer from memory before looking it up. For these questions, I think to get the right answers, I might have to watch the episode again, darn.

Lou (and Nelson),

Well, I use it as a last resort. I knew two of the five questions that Nelson posed. But as for the others, I needed to avail myself of the library on Sarpeidon. And before you ask how I used the library, seeing as how the planet was destroyed, I used the Atavachron* and went back to that planet before the disaster.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

From The Man Trap:

1) Who is responsible for saving Lt. Uhura's life?

Answer:
Janice Rand, then Sulu saves Uhura by interrupting the Salt Vampire as they leave the Botanical lab.

2) How many people 'die' in this episode?

Answer: 1. Crewman Darnell, 2. Crewman Green, 3. Crewman Sturgeon, 4. Crewman Barnhart, and 5. Professor Crater. Lastly, 6, the Vampire itself from a phaser shot by McCoy. I suppose Nancy was a victum too, but that was before this episode, so I won't count her.

That's a large body count, must exceed the redshirts in The Apple!

3) On what deck is Barnhart found dead?

Answer: Barnhart was found by Sulu and Rand on Deck 9, Section 2.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Today is Star Trek's 42nd Birthday, thanks Lou for reminding us!

Here's a trivia question that is pertinent. We all know that Gene Roddenberry gave birth to the basic idea of Star Trek and many others contributed to it's creation and built upon the concept to make Star Trek what it is in 1966.

But we would never have seen Star Trek if it were not for the support by people at Desilu and NBC. Can you name at least one executive at NBC who supported Trek and help give it birth? (He was the one who gave Desilu the chance to make another pilot because he was impressed by The Cage, not that it was too cerebral as has been widely told, but that The Cage didn't properly show what Trek's potential was.)

And a secondary bonus question: Star Trek had an unlikely re-birth in the early 70's by an unlikely television executive or the entity, can you name him (or the entity) or what he did that caused the rebirth? The name is harder to know, so if you can name what he did, that would count. (This action really had it's start in 1967, but didn't happen till 1972)

Answers if you don't know, no cheating! :

Warning Spoiler! Click to show
The NBC executive who liked Star Trek and supported it is Mort Werner, Vice President of Programs.

The rebirth of Star Trek was due to the insights of Dick Block of Kaiser Broadcasting. He owned several UHF stations and loved Star Trek and wanted to buy it for syndication as far back as 1967. He didn't get to buy it until after cancellation. It was his innovative idea to counter program Star Trek at the early evening hours of 6:00pm when the prime demographic was home and would watch Star Trek. The success of the original stations in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston, Cleveland and Detroit caused other UHF stations to do the same and Star Trek history was written!

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Nelson,

I didn't know the answer to your question, so I had to peek.

Okay all,

Here are a couple of questions that probably aren't too difficult. But these answers were new to me today, as I watched an episode I hadn't seen for quite some time.

1) What is the first scene ever filmed for TOS? A simple description of what is occuring during the scene should suffice.

2) In which episode of TOS do we see the first shot of any shuttlecraft traveling through space?

3) From what episode are the following three images taken?

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Scott, I guess those trivia questions I posted were a bit outside of the series itself and more about the behind the scenes stuff, so I'm not surprised no one answered!

About your questions, here's my try:

1. The first scene shot for Star Trek was with Captain Pike and Doctor Boyce in Pike's quarters talking about the Rigel incident. I think it was filmed in late December 1964.
2. I think the first time we see a shuttlecraft traveling through space is The Menagerie. The obvious answer is Galileo Seven, but I think The Menagerie aired first. That's my guess.
3. The 3 images are from The Menagerie, part 1.

Nelson,

Well done! I think Lou is going to wish he had had a stab at them.

Yes, the Galileo Seven aired after the two-part Hugo Award winning episode.

The only addition I would make is that the first scene filmed was on November 27, 1964--at least according to the Okuda pop-up commentary for the episode, which I watched for the first time today with a couple of my kids. That was a very interesting commentary. I tend to like the written blocks as opposed to the voiceover commentary, since with the former I don't have to try to listen to two dialogues simultaneously.

You're up next--good job.

BTW, I am quite close to 'buckling'--and I ain't talking about the engines here. I have a birthday after the holidays, and I'm going to be discussing a few gifts with my wife.

Have you guys ever noticed that small scuff on the rim of the communication viewer screen. No matter what area they are in, on ship, that scuff distracts me.

I see it like a sore thumb in 2 of those pics you posted Scott. I cant not see it.
On classic Battlestar Galactica, the viper cockpit had a scratch or dent that i always see too. Even though you have dozens of vipers you got one cockpit.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Thinking of trivia questions is getting harder!

Who is the only actor to have not shown up for work in TOS?

And here's a bonus question that is sort of unfair as it's never really mentioned on screen, but it's for fun. What is the compliment of the refit USS Enterprise, how many officers and how many enlisted personnel? (source: Star Trek The Motion Picture cut-away illustration)

yes, it is getting harder to stump you guys. We know it all.

Anyway, actor not to show, as in the star? Nimoy, probably. He had some contract dispute in the second season. They were looking for other actors, like Mark Leonard, and they guy who ended up playing Stonn, to replace him.
Guest star, not to show? Barrymore in the Alternative Factor. I think he got "sick" before shooting.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Rick, You are correct, I was referring to Barrymore, a guest star. It resulted in him not getting any work for some time.

That's true about Nimoy. In the second year, his agent mistakenly was asking for a fee far greater then Nimoy requested. And it caused some problems between he and the producers.

If you're up for it, it's your turn for the next question.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

I will pose a question, since Rick seems to be watching horror movies at the moment.

What episode are the following lines from, and who said them?

"The sky does not interest me. I must consider the words I have heard."

Hey Scott! This must be one of your favorite episodes, Friday's Child. It was spoken by the new Teer, after Akaar is killed, And whose name I can't recall without looking it up.

Thanks Scott! Just to fully answer, the person's name who said that line was, Maab.

Here's a half baked question because i don't fully know all the answers!

In all the spin-off Trek series(TNG, DS9, Voyager), how many times was the name Kirk invoked? If you can name the episode, then you're better then me, which would not take much!

I know they said his name in The Naked Now, on TNG...right?
And, of course his name was brought up on DS9, More Tribbles, More Tribulations. Thats all i can think of.
I have been putting in a bunch of OT at work, and watching my horror movies on my days off. Scott, you got me beat to a pulp with the number you have already! I bow to the master. Now, can you beat Russ or Pete?

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Rick,

As far as the Challenge, I can watch about one a day. I think I've only watched two per day twice, and both times were (I think) on weekends. And no, there's no way I will come close either to Russ or Pete.

Nelson,

As far as the trivia question is concerned, I'll chime in with a few that I can think of, and will probably come up with more tomorrow, when I'm a bit more awake.

TNG:

Unification (I think--or perhaps it was only by 'cowboy diplomacy' )
Relics

DS9:

Crossover
Trials and Tribble-ations

VOY:

Flashback

ENT:

In a Mirror, Darkly

More later as I think of them.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

I actually have a question for anyone willing to answer. I am not too familiar with Star Trek other than the movies which I have greatly enjoyed over the years. But I would like to check out some of the episodes but I am more interested in the episodes which connect with the movies or are mentioned in the movies. So far, I do know that Star Trek II is a sequel of sorts to the Original Series episode Space Seed with Khan and that Star Trek: First Contact is a sequel of sorts to the Next Generation episode Best of Both Worlds with the Borg. And that's all I'm familiar with. Can someone give me a list of episodes that are directly referenced in the movies to check out? Thanks.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Rick, Scott- Very good, you guys got the ones I was thinking of.

David- That's a tough question. The films really didn't refer to the TOS or TNG series beyond what you mentioned as far as I can recall. Though as Scott mentioned above, TNG had the two part episode, Unification that guest starred Leonard Nimoy. Spock refers to Cowboy Diplomacy and that was a indirect reference to Star Trek 6-The Undiscovered Country that hit theaters shortly after that TNG episode aired. With all the Treksperts here, there should be others who could chime in with more examples. And Relics, another show Scott referred to above, guests James Doohan as Scotty. He refers to the characters and certain events from various episodes of TOS, but not films. I may have another to add later, it is late!

Oh yeah, Generations does reference the TNG episode, "Family".
