Here's the answer and it is far from canon:

In the movie Boomerang (1992), Eddie Murphy's character claims to know "everything about Star Trek" and in one scene, he is watching the show with his girlfriend. He says "do you know what Spock's last name is? .... Jenkins. Spock Jenkins, of the Jenkins boys of Vulcan."

One of my favorite Star Trek moments in a non-Trek movie.

I don't have time enough to watch all these DVDs!

Mine would have to be the (paraphrased) 'he's vaporized' dialogue and scene in Daddy Day Care. The first time I heard that, it was priceless.

Mine is probably in Boston Legal (I know, TV show, not a movie), when a mobile phone 'rings' like a communicator's chirp, in earshot of Denny Crane...

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Thought I'd drop in with a new question. It's been silent for a while!

In honor of the Remastered Assignment: Earth airing this weekend, Which Apollo mission is used as the stock footage of the Apollo Saturn V rocket that is supposed to be launching a nuclear warhead?

I actually do not know the answer. But an Apollo buff probably could know. Based on the time period this episode was filmed, it could be either Apollo 4, 6 or Apollo 8. (edit: I found the answer to the question, if the source is correct. I'll reveal the answer if no one guesses.)

As a bit of trivia, the last Saturn V rocket launched to the Moon was 1972 and the last Saturn V ever launched was for Skylab in 1973.

And we all know the last Star Trek TOS episode to air was June 6th, 1969. Apollo 11 was launched in July 16, 1969, and man walked on the Moon July 21st, 1969. I still remember seeing it live! The Moon landing that is. How many of us as kids watched Apollo launches in the 1960's?

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

I thought it was Apollo 3 that was used as stock footage. I'm going totally by memory here. I'm sure I could look it up on Wikipedia to find the answer.

One of my earliest memories is one of the moon landings.

I wish that they would have gone through with that Gary Seven series.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Without looking it up, Apollo 8 is the likely one. It was the first manned mission, so they setup all the cameras more than they did in previous missions.
There was no Apollo 3. What might be dubbed Apollo 2 and 3 were tests of the Saturn 1b rockets. Apollo 4 was the first successful launch of the full Saturn V with first stage booster.
Apollo 1 was of course, the tragic death of the three astronauts.

No more guesses or anyone with the answer for the question of which Apollo mission is seen in Assignment Earth? If no one answers later today, I'll reveal it.

I'll chime in with Apollo 6, only because it hasn't been guessed thus far.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Sorry guys, the answer: Apollo 4 footage was used in Assignment: Earth.

According to Wikipedia, it was Apollo 4, the first flight of the Apollo rocket. It was launched November 9th, 1967. I checked other sources and they also say the shots used in Star Trek were of Apollo 4. A piece of trivia I wouldn't expect to find about the Apollo program. That makes sense in the timeline, as Assignment: Earth was filmed either January or February 1968, according the Memory Alpha. It aired March 29th, 1968.

Apollo 6 was launched April 4th, 1968.

I can see Roddenberry, who produced this episode himself, since it was his pilot, would want to use the latest ship in the US Space Program for Star Trek!

Nelson,

Yes, and somewhat eerily, it aired six days before MLK was assassinated. I suppose that it wouldn't be that odd, except that the episode mentions that there will be an important assassination today:

Current Earth crises would fill a tape bank, Captain.
There will be an important assassination today,
an equally dangerous government coup in Asia,
and this could be highly critical --
The launching of an orbital nuclear warhead platform
by the United States
countering a similar launch by other powers.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

This weekend, May, 17th will air the Remastered, "A Private Little War".

This episode was noteworthy as one of several to comment on war.

However, there are 2 firsts for Star Trek. Name one of the firsts. I know this may sound cryptic, but maybe not! You guys keep answering questions I thought were kinda hard. Then again, it might not be that hard if you know Star Trek TOS, so you might know both.

Greg-

Sorry, while you are correct, as legend and cast have repeated this story of the kiss, I'm afraid that I wasn't clear in the question.

There are 2 first for this Remastered episode airing this weekend, A Private Little War. What are they?

That was in Plato's Stepchildren anyway.

Ummm...wild guess...first reference that Nurse Chapel had a thing for Spock?
First black cast member (besides Nichols) with Dr. Slap the Crap out of Spock?

I'm a ****ing idiot 'cause I can't make a lamp?
No, you're a genius 'cause you can't make a lamp.
What do you know about trigonometry?
I could care less about trigonometry.
Did you know without trigonometry there would be no engineering? Without lamps there'd be no light.

It was the first of 2 times Dr. Mabinga, or whatever his name was, appeared on the show. The other was That Witch Survives!

Correct Rick! You were close Paul.

Rick, your turn for another question.

The other first was one of two times as well in the history of TOS. Can anyone guess what I am think it is? I know it's really trivial! Hint: It involves a slight change in how they did the titles in the first act.

If i recall, and once again i could be wrong. The episode title, writer, and director were not at the begining of act one, but began a bit into the episode.

OK....who can name, without looking, the other Constitution Class Starships. Hint, 12 in all.

I know. For some reason, I thought Nelson was just asking for Trek firsts. It only makes sense that he'd mean for the episode he was discussing, but my migraine made it hard to think. Or something.

Nelson,

Great questions. I just wanted to add that I believe that A Private Little War strongly implied that Lt. Uhura was in command. Kirk is called by her while he is in Sickbay, right after they get back from the planet with an injured Spock in tow. She informs Kirk that there are Klingons (etc.); although she is not literally sitting in the big chair, she is the person who first contacts the Captain. When he gets to the Bridge, Chekov is the first to speak, and then Lt. Uhura, both filling him in on the situation. Neither is sitting in the chair. But a Lieutenant outranks an Ensign.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Correct again Rick, A Private Little War starts before the titles are shown. The other is Bread And Circuses.

Thanks Scott! I never made that connection that Uhura was in command, good observation!

As for the 12 starships, that's a great question. I'm working on it without cheating. I haven't thought about it in a long time, I only have 8 so far.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

The starship question is a good one too.

Enterprise
Saratoga
Hood
Excalibur
Lexington
Exeter
Potemkin
Defiant
Philadelphia
Constitution
Republic
Yorktown

I'm not sure I have the correct names for them all, but I know I'm close.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Here are my 12 names of the Constitution Class Starships seen or mentioned in TOS based on memory alone:

1. Enterprise (NCC-1701)
2. Constellation; The Doomsday Machine
3. Potemkin; The Ultimate Computer and Turnabout Intruder
4. Lexington; The Ultimate Computer
5. Excalibur; The Ultimate Computer
6. Hood; The Ultimate Computer
7. Intrepid; The Immunity Syndrone
8. Exeter; The Omega Glory
9. Defiant; The Tholian Web
10. Yorktown; Obsession
11. Republic; Court Martial
12. Constitution (NCC-1700) This one is a guess, but seems likely as the class ship. Not canon, but was mentioned in the Franz Joseph Blueprints IIRC. Roddenberry approved though!
13. Farragut; mentioned in Obsession, but it's not clear it was a Constitution class starship. Seems likely though.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

I would have to go back and look, but in Court martial behind Commodore Stone they had a screen with the names of the ships, and what they were doing. I am not sure if you could read all the names. I have the list in the Making of Trek of the Const. Class ships.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Rick, after I made and posted my list of ship names, I did have a look at the Court Martial scene you mentioned above.

Here's a screen cap, and it doesn't help! So I don't think I'm giving away the answer by posting it here, I hope!

Plus there's only 10 ships there, assuming they are all Constitution Class.

Nelson,

That's a great image. This is one of the things I love about this Board. I've been watching TOS for more than forty years, and that's the first time I ever heard of (or saw) that image before. Nice catch!

NCC-1700 better get the lead out! Nice pic, thans for posting it Nelson. I could of sworn it had the names. My mind was playing tricks. Tonight i will post the ship names that are written in The Making of Star Trek. Its so nice out, i have not been in much.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

OK, from page 165 of my faithful Making of Star Trek book. This would only be cannon, if you assume the show's bible is cannon.
Enterprise
Exeter
Excalibur
Lexington
Yorktown
Potempkin
Republic
Hood
Constitution
Kongo

Destroyed in various episodes
Constellation
Farragut
Valiant
Intrepid

Those were the names they established for star ships, but as we know the Defiant clearly looked like a Constitution class ship. Its not on the list, so take that for what you will.

OK, here is a tidbit, Stone's board in Court Martial has 10 ships listed, Kirk says in Tommorow is Yesterday, their are 12 like it in the fleet, and i came up with 14 names from the book...pppfftttt!!!
