Summer 2008 and then some

I wanted to share some thoughts on the summer of 2008. Not box office thoughts, because Terry has a thread for that. I wanted to talk about how exciting I think this summer is from several different perspectives. I grew up on summer films, though I've transitioned more towards fall films. I still love good summer movies, and some years we get a few and some we only get one or two.

2008 looks particular promising. As an old comic fan, we're getting a few comic movies, but that's nothing new, right? Well, except that they star Christian Bale, Robert Downey Jr, and Ed Norton. And the supporting cast in each is exceptional. While I readily admit TDK is the big dog, with some extraordinary promise, Iron Man looks to be a spectacular time at the theaters. Even the little seen The Incredible Hulk has real promise, with Tim Roth and Norton squaring of. None of the three look like a cash-in, and that's something. Going a bit more indy, even Hellboy is getting a sequel. While the 2004 edition didn't rock my world, that was pre-Pan's Labyrinth. Without having to sell the unsellable concept to the mainstream, del Toro can focus on what makes Hellboy special, so I have high hopes for the sequel. If nothing else, del Toro is a visualist of the first order, so Hellboy 2: The Golden Army will be something to see.

Also in May with Iron Man is Spielberg making an adventure film, something he hasn't done in some time. Not only that, but a sequel to one of the most beloved characters in Hollywood history. If that wasn't enough, Indy IV nabbed Cate Blanchett as a baddie, and loaded up on outstanding character actors as well. This is the best cast of any Indy film to date.

How about something new? Pixar isn't batting 1.000 for everybody, but I think almost every moviegoer with a pulse and some modicum of critical faculty recognizes the magic that studio possesses. They are continuing to push boundaries with Wall-E this summer. There is not much more to say about. If you've seen any of the preview material, you know we're probably in for a treat.

Another film (that might not be great) that looks promising is Hancock. It's not a superhero spoof per se, but it has the biggest star in the world (now) acting like an asshat, and it's directed by up-and-comer Peter Berg. Berg has a lot of potential (he's been mentored by Michael Mann), and he's getting a star at the peak of his prowess in a silly concept.

The Apatow train has The Pineapple Express coming out, and oddly enough, this one is being directed by David Gordon Green (speaking of mentors, one of Green's influences and supporters is the Terence Malick...so this is an interesting pairing of concept and director at the very least). Can't speak to the content, but the concept is intriguing, and Apatow has provided the past few summers with some good laughs.

In a wild card spot in Speed Racer. I could not care any less for the concept, but it's being directed by the Wachowski siblings (spare me the jokes), who have no shortage of skill and visual acumen. The trailer was totally bonkers, but what the hey. It ALSO has a killer cast.

There are plenty of other offerings that could be great, just as some of the above movies could tank. But this summer looks especially strong on the talent side. Good directors has good casts for these mainstream blockbusters (thanks to Spidey and LOTR for selling the studio on talent plus concept), and this summer looks particularly special. I haven't been this excited for a summer since 2005, and this looks noticeably stronger than that one.

Just wanted to share those thoughts. It's kind of interesting seeing genre films start to garner real casts and scripts. I know I missed some films others are excited about, but these are mine. And it's about twice as many films as I usually have each summer to get excited about.

And then some:

Then we have a one week period in Thanksgiving with a new Bond and Harry Potter 6...kind of a quality sequel to a quality summer all by itself But we can discuss those later.

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

You make some really astute observations Chuck.

It is refreshing to see genre films taken a lot more seriously by the studios. You can also give credit to Johnny Depp for more great actors actively seeking roles in these movies. After all, not a lot of people expected him to earn an Oscar nod for his work in that little Pirate flick back in '03.

Before his death, there was already talk about WB launching an aggressive Oscar campaign for Heath Ledger's work in TDK. Given his untimely death, many speculate that he'll garner a nod regardless of WB's campaigning if he's nearly as good as advertised.

Whatever the case may be, this summer definitely has a legit chance of really becoming one for the books, ala the summers of '82, '84, '02, and '04.

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

I'm excited to see The X-Files 2 but I pretty much expect it to get run over by Batman sequel.

EDIT: Overall, I'm most looking forward to Indy IV, The X-Files 2, Wall*E and The Pineapple Express. Of course, I'm sure my friends will talk me into seeing/hype me up for the rest of the blockbusters too.

I think X-Files 2 will be fine. Its opening during the second week of TDK. Even if TDK has a solid percentage hold, X-Files should be able to have a solid debut weekend.

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

I don't want to talk BO (see Terry's thread for that ), but I do think X-Files 2 will show that it still has a pretty big audience. It was an extremely popular show with very loyal fans. Beyond if the film is good or not, it'll get an audience. It won't outgross any of the "BIG" films, but it'll do fine.

Thanks for the kind words Terry. That was kind of what I was getting at with my first post. I am very pleased to see "genre" films (paging Holadem!) being treated like good scripts (if they have good scripts, that is). There is a lot of talent, both in front of and behind the camera, attached to these films, and I think audiences respond to quality and sincerity. And I don't mean being overly serious, just taking the material seriously.

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

I completely agree with you. Its great to see the studios putting people in charge of these properties that actually love the material. That really wasn't the case in years past.

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

BTW, "Snow Angels" directed by David Gordon Green will be showing up in theaters soon (limited release now, but should open wider). It got 2 thumbs up by Roeper and Philips (and they don't seem to have a high percentage of 2TUs when they are paired to do the show).

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

I'd love to see the X Files movie be good and do well. It would be great to see it have strength as a film franchise the way Star Trek did in the eighties. An X Files movie every 2-3 years would be great!

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

Wanted to revisit this thread with some post-mortems, even though there is still the one biggie left, plus a few odds and ends.

I honestly think this has been the best summer in years (for summer films). I know that is a subjective comment to make, but I'll make it anyway. I've been VERY pleased with no less than 4 of the films, and enjoyed several others. The point Terry and I bandied about dealt with treating adaptable material like property or like a loved one. In many cases this summer, material was treated as a good idea as is, instead of trying to make it fit into a standard Hollywood mold.

We love our rankings here, but I'm never comfortable with that. I will say that I loved these summer films:

Speed Racer
WALL*E
Hellboy II

I really liked these films:

Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Kung Fu Panda
Wanted

I haven't seen everything released (who does?), but what got me to the theater was almost always worth my time. Iron Man was better than anything from last two summers (save the Pixar films), and I saw three films better than that this summer.

Furthermore, the acting is up across the board. Instead of simple spectacle, studios are allowing a bit of character and drama to show in their films (probably thanks to LOTR, POTC, and the Bourne series). Surprise, surprise, but audiences like their spectacle attached to a decent story.

Anyways, it's a nice validation of my thoughts from a few months back. I would like a bit more variety in our summers (we're not all teenage boys), but at least the movies are getting pretty good. I'm sure the crushing wheel of cyclical doom will roll around soon, and we'll be inundated with crap again. But until then, I'll enjoy what we've gotten. A lot.

And this is pre-TDK, even.

So I take it that you're looking forward to "Mamma Mia!" this weekend.

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

There's nothing this summer that I LOVED. All of these I liked (to varying degrees) but didn't go nuts over:

Indy
Iron Man
WALL-E
Get Smart
Incredible Hulk
Hellboy II
Hancock

I HATED:

Wanted
The Happening

I'm hoping "Dark Knight" will finally give me a 2008 summer flick I really like...

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

I've liked (in no particular order):

Speed Racer
Wall-E
Iron Man
Kung Fu Panda

I found these two films to be okay but a bit of a let down:

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull
Hellboy 2

When you have to shoot...shoot. Don't talk!

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

Let's see...

Was delighted by:

Iron Man
Speed Racer
WALL-E

Had a pretty good time with:

The Incredible Hulk
Get Smart

Was frustrated by Indy 4.

Found The Happening so bad it was funny.

Wasn't motivated enough to see:

Prince Caspian
Wanted
Hancock

Still on the hit list:

THE DARK KNIGHT
Hellboy II
X-Files 2

Will probably skip The Mummy 3 and that Star Wars cartoon.

Re: Summer 2008 and then some

I'll play:

I haven't seen everything yet, but I have gone to the movies more in the last two months than I usually go in six months.

Loved:
Iron Man-nearly perfect superhero movie
Incredible Hulk-almost as good as Iron Man
(it doesn't hurt that I'm an old school Marvel fan)

Really liked:
Hancock-I had lowered my expectations going in, I guess that worked, because I really enjoyed it and would love to see sequels
Indy IV-okay, crystal aliens, bomb-shelter fridges and Shia as Tarzan aside, it was a pretty good Indy flick

Liked but have already almost forgotten:
Narnia: Prince Caspian
Speed Racer

I haven't seen Wanted or Hellboy II yet, or any of the comedies, honestly I'll probably pass on most of them until DVD or Blu-Ray, same with X-Files 2 and Mummy 3.

I do plan on seeing The Dark Knight in IMAX this weekend though, and even though it will be animated, I can't pass up Star Wars on the big screen.
