How the hell do they not take Mendenhall, who was the best player on the board at that point? Seriously!
Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
I know it's NOT a blunder, Casey, but I still have to ask.2007 Raiders
6th best rushing team in the league
31st against the rush
So instead of Dorsey (a run-crushing DT), you take McFadden?
Cowboys got the two guys in the first we were supposed to. I guess that's good. I'd have preferred the Illinois back myself.
Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
In an effort to maintain their current standard of excellence, the Lions snag Stockar Boden and Barrett Bailey.Seriously, even if Dizon turns out to be the next London Fletcher, is there any way they can't get him with their 2nd pick in the 3rd round?
Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
The Lions reached for both their first day choices. Are any of us surprised? Picking an offensive lineman in the 1st round wouldn't have been a bad idea if the Bears hadn't taken Chris Williams, but they could have got Cherilus much later. If they were not going to trade down again, I think Felix Jones was the proper pick at #17, since all the decent DEs, LBs and OTs were off the board. At least Detroit will be picking higher in the 2009 draft... we have that to look forward to.
My god, this team is so incompetent it's beyond belief.| I know it's NOT a blunder, Casey, but I still have to ask. 2007 Raiders 6th best rushing team in the league 31st against the rush So instead of Dorsey (a run-crushing DT), you take McFadden? |
I was surprised by that pick, too. With Sapp gone, Dorsey seemed like the logical pick there. McFadden is more of a luxury than a need. After all, the Raiders have Michael Bush returning from injury to go along with Fargas.
Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
It is reported that the Lions had a deal in place with the Eagles to send Roy Williams for Lito Shepard and the Eagles high second round pick. I would love to have Lito on the team, but something happened. The only hope i was holding out was for them to draft Rice, the RB from Rutgers, but they blew that too....Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

Did you want them to pick a wide receiver instead?
Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
No, but there were other LB's there that were ranked higher, as well as cornerbacks. That being said, I am very happy with their first third round pick of Kevin Smith, the RB from Central Florida who was 67 yards shy of breaking Barry Sanders single season rushing record. He looks like he should be able to step in and help right away. Finally a pick I am happy with.Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
Wow, the Chargers traded next years number 2 to NE to draft a running back in the 3rd round. I guess GM Smith was really impressed with him. He's been pretty good with his deals, so maybe this will work out. If the guy is good, it's like getting next year's number two, this year.Slightly OT, but at the beginning of the last season, where were the Giants ranked, as far as chances of getting to and then winning the SB? Where they even in the top 10?

I'm also starting to think that one of the worst things that happened to the Patriots was dodging all those bullets to remain undefeated. I am particularly thinking of the game in which the got three tries on 4th down. If they had lost a game, a lot of pressure would have been gone, they might have been much loser and played better in the SB.
I'm sure any fan of a team would rather lose a single game in the season and win the SB, rather than the other way around. I realize hind-sight is 20-20, but using it anyway, you could just see each each successive victory become harder and harder. The Chargers without LT, without Gates, with Rivers banged up, almost beat them in NE.

The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again.

In SI's pro football preview last year, Dr Z picked them to go 6-10, tied with Washington for 3rd place in the NFC East.

While it's difficult to discount the "pressure" factor of trying to make history with an undefeated season, I'm not sure if it would have made a difference in the game. The Giants did something that was rarely done to the Pats during the season -- put a consistent pass rush on Brady. I do not recall any particular "choke" moments for the Pats. In fact, Brady had drove them down for the lead score just before Eli's last minute winning drive.
This will be an interesting season for New England. Super Bowl losers have traditionally struggled the next season, and their defense is getting older (especially at linebacker). However, on paper they are still easily the best team in their division. Predictions for 2008 should be all over the place with this team.

Both SI and ESPN have done mock drafts for next year. SI says that the Lions pick 3rd and ESPN says they pick 2nd. Ouch!Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

So they are both predicting the Lions will trade down from #1?

This is just one more embarrassing chapter in the Lions saga. I certainly hope that Ford Field fails to sellout for all the games this year. Until fans stop giving money to the Fords, nothing will change with this organization.

Former Lion Kevin Jones signed a 1 year deal with the Bears. $10 says he does better there than he ever did in Detroit.

Army grad won't get NFL shot after policy change - NFL - SI.comThe Lions just can't catch a break, can they? I realize that as a 7th rounder, he was a long shot to make the team.

Chargers release veteran WR Wric Parker...who needs a WR!huh?
Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
I'm getting a little nervous about this season for my Steelers. There are distractions about the team ownership. Casey Hampton is too fat to practice. The punter just got a season-ending injury. And Polamalu has yet another hamstring injury (although they are downplaying it). The Browns are looking strong. Ravens and Bengals never give games away either. I know it's just pre-season hand-wringing, but damn our schedule looks tough this year!"I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND!!!" - Barton Fink
Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
It could be worse, Bob. The Steelers ownership squabble pales in comparison to the soap opera going on in Green Bay with Brett Favre.Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
Yeah, I've always liked Brett Favre but I have to wonder what he was thinking. Was he just feeling pressure to make a decision earlier this year when he "retired", or is he just the capricious self-serving scatterbrain he appears to be now?"I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND!!!" - Barton Fink

I would think he is that, after insisting on going to a division rival, and not bothering to talk to the Jets or Bucs.

Our latest national nightmare is over: Favre to be traded to the Jets for a conditional draft pick (dependent on how successful Favre is this season for the Jets). Pennington to be traded or released as early as today (Thursday)."Jee-sus, it's like Iwo Jima out there" - Roger Sterling on "Mad Men"

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
It appears the Packers won this battle with Favre. Not only do they not deal him to division rival Minnesota, but they send him to a non-contender in the other conference instead of to possible contender Tampa. The Madden curse is alive and well!
