TVShowsonDVD is reporting that this is coming June 3rd from CBS/Paramount.

Well it's probably at least 30 episodes but still I hate split seasons as well, I'll grab this as an opportunity to see the rearely seen B&W first season with William Frawley.

This one really caught me by surprise, and I must say it's a pleasant surprise. My only real gripe is the obvious one - split season set again. Dang it! Seems like Paramount is intent on torturing me like this. All my favorites from their catalog they seem intent on splitting. And it's a real killer with a show that ran as long as this one did. It'll take forever to get all these (assuming it sells well enough to warrant future releases).

It will be 18 episodes (36 total), and I too hate this season splitting thing. For a 12 season series that's 24 sets? Be interesting to see what the MSRP is.

It will be interesting to see what the MSRP will be on this Jeff, especially when there are 18 half hour episodes, the equivalent of just 9 hour long episodes. Even Paramount's release of "The Fugitive" has 15 hour long episodes on 4 DVDs. Eighteen half hour episodes could easily fit on three discs; the MSRP should be less than a four disc set.

One would hope that Paramount will price this accordingly. If it comes in with a $39.95 pricetag you know they are milking us vintage fans.

They are probably testing the marketing waters with the half-season release. If it does well they may start releasing entire season sets. Everybody buy this so we can get those! ;>

I must admit this announcement comes as a surprise, albeit a pleasant one. I haven't seen the first season in years. It'll be great to see Chip as a little kid and Bill Frawley as Bub.

Hope this means we may see Donna Reed someday, too.

What is it with these half season sets? Sony has been doing well with I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched with 30+ episodes per set. Even Paramount was able to include 30+ episodes for the I Love Lucy sets.

I guess Paramount needs to boost its profits and charge fans double the cost for season sets by splitting them up.

Great news! I hope they at least make it to season two so I can see "Robbie Valentino" again. That's the episode where Robbie gets to utter that classic line... "Please pass the Bunsen burner!"

Bewitched, Jeannie, and Lucy have never been off the air since they began. My Three Sons seldom gets any exposure any more.

I only remember the reruns of the 70s including only the ones after the son gets married and they adopt Ernie or was it Chip?

why do split seasons for shows like this and Gunsmoke? My Three Sons ran 12 seasons as it is, that's already sufficient shelf space usage. And Gunsmoke ran for 20 years, who wants 40 sets when even 20 will take a lot of room?

I will never ever buy split season releases. Period.
I was planning on collecting Gunsmoke, but the Season 2 vol 1 release killed those plans.

How successful has this tactic been in the past? Have there been hugely successful partial season releases? Just doesn't make any sense to me....

Thanks for passing along the great news, Gary!

I'm pleasantly surprised this is coming out. With the relatively low exposure this has had over the past couple of decades I figured it would be a longshot. In fact I had just recently looked at the Paramount syndication bible page for MTS and there was no indication on there that any kind of restoration or HD Transfer was taking place for this show.

Pricing will dictate the success or failure of this. (In other words, don't price as a complete season.) Also, while it's great that Paramount is releasing so much, I continue to be concerned that they are glutting the market with classic releases. I'd rather that they fast track some of their current releases to completion and then start on a new batch. Perhaps their market research tells them otherwise though?

I never thought I'd see the day when a major studio reached this far back to produce season sets of a show that's been out of the limelight for so long. Glad to hear this. Thanks to Paramount and CBS for picking up on this one. But splitting seasons for a half hour show is really stretching it. Hopefully sales will warrant releasing whole season sets, if that's the criterion.

For this show, unlike other sitcoms of this period, I think the early seasons are the best, although it really peaked in the 4th and 5th seasons.

Did anyone ever dream William Frawley's post-"I Love Lucy" series would make it to DVD before Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance's post-"I Love Lucy" series did!?

I'm glad to see this, but you'd think they'd have done "The Lucy Show" first.

No one likes volumes but it sure is better than releasing one or two full seasons and then stopping.

I dunno, i have seen no evidence that volumes helps sales. If anything it hurts them in my personal belief. I would much prefer to have 2 full seasons then stop over 2 half seasons which equal 1 full season then stop

I can't think of any of Paramount's volume releases (though there may be some that I'm not thinking of) that aren't slowly but surely coming out. I can think of a large number of Sony and a few Fox releases that have one or two releases and then they quit. If it takes a volume release to get it to come out, it's better than nothing.

Well if there was some sort of garuntee or evidence that they would keep releasing the show via Volumes over just doing 2 full seasons and stopping. Then i would be on-board with getting more show in the end. It just seems to me with shows that ran for 10+ years the end is likely to be the middle of the show this route. I am not 100% sure on what shows have continued and what has stopped when it comes to volumes. Has there been anything seen through to completion though ? I will have to do a little research on that.

I really only liked the first 5 (ABC) seasons of this show with Frawley and the original sons. I have them all from Nick at Nite, which ran them through complete the first time but it's still nice to see them get a release.

Did Frawley last that long I could sworn it was more like three years. Anyhoo, even Sony put an entire 22 epsiode Season of Barney Miller on 3 Disks, 9 eps on 2 of them the rest on a third, so while it's not the best method 9 episodes a disk would get this in on 4 disks, The Fact they are still selling some full season sets make these split shows totally unecessary.

Frawley stayed about 1/3 into the 5th season. William Demarest stepped in as Charley O'Casey for the last half of season 5.

Yes! I'm very surprised at this myself. I thought for sure by now we would have an announcement on The Lucy Show. And let's hope they don't pull the split-season thing with Lucy. The first season is meant to be packaged as a whole. If they can release Gomer Pyle in a complete season set, then Lucy is definitely worthy of it too.

Kudos for CBS/Paramount for releasing the show to dvd, but I think it's a bit self-defeating to do it in a split-season set. Will those not familiar with the show pick up an 18 episode set for $25+?

Yeah how these decisions are made make me scratch my head the only thing I can think of is that Gomer is Color and My 3 Sons is B&W. If that makes any sense.

Yep. No one will ever convince me that the b&w versus color thing doesn't have a lot to do with these decisions. I still say it's a big part of the discussion in the board rooms where these decisions are being made.

And why oh why is William Frawley's pic not included on the cover art? I know that MacMurray is the "star", but without meaning any offense, I have to say that a box with "Fred Mertz" on the cover is way more likely to capture the casual shopper's eye than a box with Fred MacMurray's picture. And a split season for a 1/2 hour sitcom? UGH!! The marketing department could use some serious lessons in how to attract a buyer.
