Re: Mrs. Doubtfire & Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Blu-rays - 5/13

I'd buy both without blinking if I could count on Fox to incorporate the copious extras from the respective DVD releases (yes, I'm one of the lucky ones who's had the Behind-the-Seams edition of MRS. DOUBTFIRE since last year) but, since they never seem to, it'll likely be another pass for me...

Fox has been including most, if not all DVD extras on their BD releases since Fall '07 (save those titles that were originally scheduled for before that). It's MGM who has yet to port over extras.

Yes, please do, because--with the exception of THE FLY--the titles you've listed offer only a fraction of the bonus features found on the SD counterparts and, as such, don't effectively ease my concern. If you're cool with truncated extras, more power to you--I know many share your mindset--but for me, when SD extras are left off the Blu-ray version, I'll be passing each and every time...

Re: Mrs. Doubtfire & Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Blu-rays - 5/13

Well, I don't know how you can tell what "featurettes" on the I, Robot release are in full, but I digress. My point is that they are not barebones like they were a year ago.

In actuality, I rarely watch extras, and if I do it's usually once and done. I have 18 discs of Lord of the Rings and I think I've watched one documentary in 5+ years since I bought the first one!

Brandon, you and me have a simular mindset. I for one have been special featured to death. I could care less about those things anymore. I'll take 1080p and lossless audio over special features any day of the week.

The problem here is that there is absolutely no need for it to be an "either/or" proposition--a 50 GB Blu-ray can easily carry over all the special features from its SD counterpart, especially if they're not upgraded to 1080p (which would be nice, but if not, it's not a deal-breaker for me).

Exactly, I would never pass up on viewing a favorite movie in glorious HD because of a lack of extras which may only be viewed once, if ever. The movie will always be replayed.

And hidefdigest.com just reported that BUTCH CASSIDY will contain most but not all of the SD's extras. Looks like I'll be passing on both this and MASTER AND COMMANDER...such a shame; I really want to give Fox my money. All they gotta do is follow Sony Pictures' model...

Re: Mrs. Doubtfire & Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Blu-rays - 5/13

I too am in the "would rather get 1080p picture/lossless audio" camp but with all that extra space, it just reeks of a double-dip situation. The studios will just never tire of selling us the same stuff (only slightly modified) twice.

That being said, I'll probably spring for "Butch Cassidy."

Re: Mrs. Doubtfire & Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Blu-rays - 5/13

Well, the review for BUTCH CASSIDY is finally up at HighDefDigest.com and--motherPHUCK--Fox screwed us again by dropping half of the extras found on the SD version. I've never in my life had anything less than the highest regard for 20th Century Fox, but oh how I despise and am repeatedly enraged by how they're handling HD...

I have to wonder if the reviewer has done his homework when he complains about faded colors and a diffused look. Conrad Hall used a muted color palate and created a diffused look on purpose for this film. From an article from the American Society of Cinematographers' website:
Quote:
In 1969, Hall earned an Oscar for Butch Cassidy and he also filmed Willy Boy is Here and The Happy Ending. In both Butch Cassidy and Willy Boy, Hall experimented with over-exposing the negative and printing back to mute the strong primary colors, particularly blue skies and green landscapes. That technique also slightly softened the sharpness of the image. He explained that the audience doesn't perceive reality as perfectly sharp, vivid images.
Link to full article: Conrad Hall chosen to receive the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award

You can judge the quality of the disc yourself on this German website which has a comparison between the SD and BD (may take a while to load): DVD-Heaven Bildvergleich: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid HD

In my opinion the BD is a significant upgrade to the SD.

Re: Mrs. Doubtfire & Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Blu-rays - 5/13

Well, I found a detailed review of the Blu-ray of MRS. DOUBTFIRE at DVDTown.com, including time-codes for all additional features. I compared it with a similarly detailed review of the "Behind the Seams" SD at DVDTalk and--by God, by gosh and by golly--it appears that every single bonus feature has been carried over to the Blu-ray, completely and without edits (the DVDTown review only omits any reference to the Easter Egg clip from "Arrested Development", so it's possible that one minor thing didn't get moved over). I have awarded my newly-most-hated studio, Fox, by putting in a pre-order at Amazon; here's hoping more people will similarly show Fox what they need to do to move Blu-ray product. Fox hasn't received much in the way of accolades from me as of late but, for MRS. DOUBTFIRE, I tip my hat to them, with great appreciation...

Looking at those screen caps and comparisons on the German site, I have but one comment:

Film grain; sweet, sweet, natural film grain.

Re: Mrs. Doubtfire & Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Blu-rays - 5/13

Too many reviews are being done in which the reviewer has never watched the film on the big screen, thus, they're downgrading the video presentation when it shouldn't be the case, if the video presentation gives a great representation of what we experienced on the big screen. Therefore, I view such reviews with a large grain of salt. I've must of watched Butch Cassidy in the theater 3-4 times and the color description and film grain found in a certain review has always been there.

Re: Mrs. Doubtfire & Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Blu-rays - 5/13

Too bad neither the new DVD or the BD of Mrs. Doubtfire keep the director's commentary, way back from the Laserdisc era. Still, the BD looks like it's the best the film will look for awhile. I saw it three times in theaters.
