Which remastered Royal Tramp set to get?

Wouldn't you know it, they finally remaster Stephen Chow's Royal Tramp films, and then release them in two different sets!

One is the Joy Sales Hong Kong region-0 set, and the other is Dragon Dynasty's region 1. Which one to get? Best PQ, audio and (very important), best subtitles? Dragon Dynasty has a Bey Logan commentary.

If anyone sees reviews of either set, please post the links here. Or if you've seen either one, please let us know your opinion.

Re: Which remastered Royal Tramp set to get?

Based on info from the AsianDVDguide forums: The Joysales R3 version also has fancy packaging reviewed as:

Quote:
a: The extras disc has english subs on everything. There are two interviews with Wong Jing, one of them is 9:15 long and the other is 10:48. There is a 'deleted scenes' featurette too which is 6:10 on the clock... Other 'special features' are both the original trailers, and new ones, along with some trailers for other JS/FS releases.

b: The box - unwrapping the pkg from the plastic wrap one is presented with a thick trade paperback-sized box in grey, with an advert band around the box. Rather Brechtian, imo, and not at all impressive or in the spirit of the films. Opening the box one finds a two-level compartment inside, the DVD case holding the three discs on top (slipcover and cover featuring a rather plain but impressive cover with the graphic for RT on the front & RTII on the back). Turning the first level to the left reveals the second 'compartment' and a small booklet with a red cover. Opening the booklet one finds a few pages of text from the english and chinese subtitles (I think) and the rest of the pages are blank.

c: FWIW I am not a fan of motion menus really, but the menus on the main discs are probably the nicest and most artfully designed I have seen yet.

whereas the Dragon Dynasty version will only have:

Some notes about the Dragon Dynasty releases of Royal Tramp 1 and 2:

There are no original mono tracks available. Only the 5.1 remixes.

In terms of extras, aside from Bey Logan doing audio tracks for both films, you get a ten minute interview with Wong Jing (that seems to be sourced from Fortune Star) and the original trailers for both films.

So for me, while I might miss Bey Logan (not really though, his knowledge of Stephen Chow and HK comdey in particular tends to be far less robust than some oh his better commentaries) the inclusion of the Original Soundtrack is a must. Luckily my Joysales Boxset just arrived today.

Re: Which remastered Royal Tramp set to get?

Buy the Joy Sales/Fortune Star release as it has the original audio track. The mono/stereo Cantonese one while the Dragon Dynasty only has the remix versions.
By the way, HKFlix is quite sucky, I suggest using either DDDHouse.com or play-asia.com
And below is the affiliated link from me with play-asia.com
Royal Tramp 3-Disc set

Although I would buy the Dragon Dynasty only for the audio commentary. So I guess buy the Joy Sales from Play-Asia.com and then buy the other one on HKFlix.com

I too recommend AsianDVDGuide forums for Asian film stuff instead of HTF. I've been posting there more frequently too. Unlike HTF where your post about an Asian film would be buried amongst the countless threads, ADVDG forums is a great place about inquiries you made.
