Did I short my DVD player with a screwdriver? Please help!

Hey folks,

I've had a Sony SD-DVD player for years: DVP-NS415. It works perfectly and has a better interlaced picture and a WAY faster loading time than any of Sony's subsequent models. (I know, I've checked)

I decided to open it yesterday to vacuum the dust out and hopefully give the laser lens a clean. Unfortunately, I was unable to get access to the lens, as it was housed in a unit I couldn't remove.

Anyway...

Just as I was about to put the lid back on, the screwdriver literally brushed past something near the power switch inside the player. Without any noise or warning, the player switched to standby and now doesn't switch on. I foolishly had the unit on, to open and close the tray. (trying to get access to the lens)

What can I do now? If I take it to be repaired, I'm sure I'll be robbed blind.

Any ideas?

How do I get into the Service Menu?

I've found a service manual online.

I believe the player has gone into emergency-off mode.

The manual says to press (on the remote) Title, Clear and Power to enter Service Mode. My remote doesn't have a Title button!

Please help.

Did you try unplugging it for a minute or so? Removing power may cause it to reset.

Yeah, had it unplugged overnight. Still wont switch on from standby.

My guess is that its gone into a protective standby mode of some sort.

Try TIME - CLEAR - POWER instead of TITLE and see if it enters the service mode.

Are you using the factory remote or a universal?

That may mean something worse is going on. The TIME-TITLE seem to be the only different buttons for the Service Mode (TIME works on both the Sony's I have owned --one of the original 7000 and a newer Changer).

Is there a fuse visible. I'm assuming you have some lights on the unit since it's in standby mode, but are you getting any picture out of the unit at all?

The red standby light is on. That's it. It wont do anything else.

How could the player self destruct so easily? Wouldn't there have been a spark or smoke or something?

I'm really quite surprised by it.

Re: Did I short my DVD player with a screwdriver? Please help!

the fuse on the board needs to be checked and hope like mad that it is blown. This is a section from the Service manual that might help.

2. The LED does not light in green even once when the
POWER button is pressed. It remains lighting in red
(in the STANDBY mode).
2-1. Check the EVER -13V (pin-3), EVER+3.3V (pin-qa),
EVER+11V (pin-qd) voltage at CN201 of the power
supply block/
If voltage is abnormal. t The power supply block is defective.
2-2. Check if the fuse on the IF board has blown of not.
If the fuse has blown t Replace the fuse.
2-3. Check the P-CONT (pin-2) at CN401 of the IF-89
board when the POWER button is pressed.
If it remains at ā€œLā€,
t The signal line has the defective soldering or it is shortcircuited
with other signal lines or capacitor or resistor is defective
or IFCON is defective or connection between the power
supply block and the IF-89 board is defective, or connector
installation is defective, or the power supply block is defective.
2-4. Check if the button is kept depressed in the IFCON
self mode.
If the button is kept depressed. t The front panel is defective,
or IF-89 board is defective.
2-5. Check PONCHK (pin-e of IFCON (IC404) on the IF-
89 board.
If it is 0.5 V or more. t The power supply is defective, or IF-
89 board is defective.

Re: Did I short my DVD player with a screwdriver? Please help!

Wow, thanks so much for that.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what it all means.

Looks like I'm off to the repair joint.

Can you see a fuse on the circuit board? Or have you put it all back together and given up (better to do this than get mad at it)?

Is it a little white cylinder with silver ends?

I'll try and upload some pics from my cell phone.

Re: Did I short my DVD player with a screwdriver? Please help!

Jim, I'm sure that's the fuse.

So do you think it's just blown?

If I replace it, might that do the trick?

Re: Did I short my DVD player with a screwdriver? Please help!

Replacing the fuse is by far the simplest solution and likely cheapest solution. Take the fuse out, take it on a road trip to Radio Shack (or equivalent) often will find an equivalent fuse in stock, and replace with your fingers crossed. Most of those type fuses are pretty generic and it doesn't take much of a charge to blow it.

A trip to the repair shop often costs more than a new player though at least if they give a free estimate then you have an idea.
