Lionsgate Loves Frank Miller's Spirit - Superhero Hype!
Quote:
Superhero Hype! has learned that Lionsgate is really digging what writer/director Frank Miller is doing with Will Eisner's The Spirit. They've already signed him for two sequels to the graphic novel adaptation and, from what the studio has seen, are expecting it to be a blockbuster when the action-adventure opens on January 16, 2009.
"The Spirit" tells the visceral, action-packed story of a man (Gabriel Macht) who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) -- who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face -- has a different mission: he's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader.
Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Paz Vega, Jamie King, Dan Lauria, Stana Katic, Johnny Simmons and Louis Lombardi co-star.

Re: Lionsgate loves Frank Miller's The Spirit, two more sequels confirmed
Shouldn't that have been Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT? The title suggests that Miller is the creator of THE SPIRIT. It will be interesting to see what he does with Eisner's THE SPIRIT; on the other hand, I'm concerned that Miller will turn Eisner's creation into some dark, dank vision that it never was.

Who in their right mind let Miller anywhere near the character of THE SPIRIT. It looks bloody awful. I hope this trailer is not an indicator of the final product, because it looks more like a SIN CITY clone than a SPIRIT story.
Eisner's SPIRIT had a sense of fun and humour, as well as some of the sexiest femme fatales in comics. This thing looks devoid of any of the subtle humour that made THE SPIRIT great.

Well, didn't Frank Miller crate SIN CITY? Uh, yes, he did.

The teaser looks kind of nifty. But in todays flash and wham bam marketing, how can anything subtle be used? That's impossible. Also, Lionsgate does not make the greatest trailers. God, their RAMBO trailer was complete and utter garbage.

I'm really looking forward to this movie. It's easily one of my most anticipated movies for the fall/winter. I loved the teaser. Not so sure about this one though.
It seemed to sacrifice making sense for introducing the ladies. In that regard it feels more like an internet trailer or tv spot. I would expect an actual trailer to set up the premise and show that femme fatales play a key role as opposed to introducing the audience to characters it cares nothing about.

Watching the trailer again, it does look batshit insane. Some of it looks like the opening titles from a Bond movie. I suspect most of these will be dream sequences/hallucinations or the effect of some of the ladies' powers(?).
The bit that concerns me the most is Samuel L. Jackson seems to be a bit too broad with his character. Forget scenery chewing, he practically ate the trailer. Unfortunately, I don't know if that can be dialed down.

Sadly, I see this flopping harder than Speedracer. Releasing it early in the year won't help either. Two sequels huh? I'll believe um when I see um.
