For the most part, I tend to aim for <$20 on catalog titles and <$25 on new releases (multi-disc catalog titles, like CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and BLADE RUNNER being understandable exceptions, back when they first hit the market). I don't want to get into the mentality of "I won't pay more than $10-$15 for any Blu-ray" because a) my collection would grow at 1/3 its current rate and b) I would like to help the format to get a foothold in the market and succeed--I don't see the studios' and manufacturers' incentive if they can only move new product at such a miniscule price point.

GATTACA: $1

BONNIE AND CLYDE: $1
NINE INCH NAILS: BESIDE YOU IN TIME: $1
THE 6TH DAY: $1
That put a little hop back in my step!

Future Shop has begun dropping the prices on HD DVDs, including some Warner catalogue titles. Link here:
Future Shop
FWIW, I got Casablanca, The Omega Man and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut for $12.99 each.

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest I'd only be willing to spend $10-15 on a title -- under ~$20 would be ok enough in most cases (and there are plenty of those from various studios, especially Sony and also some from Disney/BV and Warner). I was just saying that most of the ones I've bought so far have fallen in that range (after whatever discounts, rebates, deals, etc) probably due in part to the fact that I didn't jump in until late Dec -- and had just been catching up w/ purchases while there also haven't been quite that many new releases of interest since then. And yeah, I bought titles like the Blade Runner set as a new release at the regular new release price -- in fact, that was the title that got me to take the plunge.

Anyway, yeah, I also agree w/ your point that we should consider upping our price tolerance a bit wherever we're comfortable so as to help move the format along for long term success. However, at least for myself, I find the $20 mark to be reasonable enough (and comfortable enough in most cases) for the forseeable future although that will likely mean no new Fox/MGM titles in the meantime unless there's some special deal (like B2G1) going on or Fox/MGM finally decides to cut their standard pricing down a notch or two...

I'm pretty much keeping it under $15. Then again, I have no problem buying secondhand discs.

Really?? I hadn't realized. In that case, I might as well just buy them from Amazon (and save the sales tax) since I didn't make it out to the store in time to pick up a couple in person.

Thanks for the pointer.

Hehheh. It might turn out best to just try searching for some audio samples (from their CD albums and such), maybe right there on Amazon. I'll probably try that later tonight for myself before ordering.

Mike,
Apparently, you can sample brief MP3 audio clips of all the tracks on the Dave Matthews BD via the CD version also sold on Amazon.
Amazon.com: Live at Radio City Music Hall: Dave Matthews,Tim Reynolds: Music
Sounds interesting enough. Think I'll probably go ahead and pick this one up.
For John Legend, I didn't find a CD version on Amazon, but there are sample clips for many/most of the songs via this (studio recording) CD sold there:
Amazon.com: Get Lifted: John Legend: Music
I enjoy a little R&B, but this doesn't sound quite like my cup of tea. Think I'll pass on this one.
Also, if you like fusion/pop-ish jazz, you might consider the Pat Metheny BD for ~$16 -- spotted it via Rachel's mention over in the hirez music thread in the Music section. You can get a brief sampling over here in the (studio recorded?) CD version:
Amazon.com: The Way Up: Pat Metheny Group,Pat Metheny: Music

Re: Consolidated HD Bargain Thread!
Mike,
Alternatively, do you have a player that can do SACD (and/or maybe DVD-Audio)? If you do -- and do not already buy discs -- maybe you'd be interested in something on the hirez audio-only formats. The Dark Side of the Moon SACD is very good, for instance, though I don't have the right setup for its hirez surround mix.

A bunch of Miles Davis' classic albums and Dave Brubeck's Time Out are also on SACD, if you want jazz. Go check out the hirez music thread for more ideas on good choices (and do a search for SACD on Amazon, etc. to shop of course

):

Cool. I wonder if Amazon'll match this time.

Re: Consolidated HD Bargain Thread!
To answer my own question: They sure will.

The David Gilmour and Dave Matthews discs are now 4 cents cheaper at Amazon that at J&R (not counting the lack of sales tax and free shipping). I assume the others are too.
