Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

Latest Bits info is up.

Only new title for BD officially announced - Clash of the Titans.

Highlights of the article, IMO...

1) All catalog special edition will get day-and-date Blu-ray release going forward.

2) Concerns over lack of lossless sound on previous Blu-ray releases are being addressed.

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

Good summary, Brandon, however I thought that this bit was important as well:

Quote:
For example, those of you who have been upset about the fact that certain key classic (and newer catalog) titles were released on HD-DVD, but still haven't been released on Blu-ray, needn't worry. They're ALL coming to Blu-ray in the months ahead. Think Mutiny on the Bounty, Forbidden Planet, Casablanca, Excalibur, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Grand Prix, V for Vendetta. Yes, all of The Matrix films are coming. The first of these previously HD-DVD exclusive titles hat you're likely to see on Blu-ray very soon is The Adventures of Robin Hood, a title for which the Blu-ray "disc image" is already complete.

That and the Dirty Harry films will not be released on HD DVD.

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

Those titles coming to BD isn't really new info, just reconfirmation of previous statements. (Of course, that's good. As we know, plans change, and it's good to know they haven't.)

As for Dirty Harry - look like I guessed right about there being no HD-DVD versions. I guess that means a June release if they are to make Q2 without HD-DVD releases.

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

On the flip side of that news about classic catalog special editions getting day-and-date BD releases, any classic catalog film that is not a special edition and doesn't get a concurrent BD release will likely never get one, at least in the next 5-7 years. So for titles like the upcoming Errol Flynn Western Collection, one can feel "safe" buying the DVD knowing that a BD version is not around the corner.

Robert, Thank You for clarifing that for me. When I read the original question somehow I missed the word "full" in regards to the restoration. Please forgive if I came across like an ass. I thought I was fighting the good fight and all.

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

I see some good titles there and at least WB has given us some information so we know what's coming out.

Actually at that point it might be considered a tripple dip if you consider the dvd's I purchased.

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

It looks like Warner is gonna continue to be my fav studio to buy from. They release the vintage films I desire. Furthermore, it sort'a appears that Sony is tryin' to keep up with the jones'es, well, Warners and release some older stuff. I hope that's a trend anyway.

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

I find it hard to believe that The Dark Knight, which is being released in theaters in July, willbe out on video a mere two months later (Q3 only goes through the end of September).

The Digital Bits only said that Heat is getting a new transfer supervised by Michael Mann. I don't think that means that it is guaranteed a release this year.

Also, I don't know why they need to re-release A Christmas Story, but whatever.

I will be gladly buying the following:

Bonnie & Clyde
Dirty Harry (hopefully I can get just the first film by itself)
Batman (also hopefully by itself)
Batman Returns (ditto)
Batman Begins
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Casablanca
Forbidden Planet
Heat
The Matrix Trilogy
Ben-Hur
Gone with the Wind
North by Northwest
The Wizard of Oz

I am wondering when we will see Lethal Weapon 3 & 4 on Blu-ray? Both LW 1 & 2 have been out for quite awhile now but no sign of 3 & 4. I am wondering if WB is going to release a LW quadrilogy with a lossless track?

Has anyone heard about LW 3 & 4 being released on Blu-ray?

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

Interesting followup on the Bits. Here's my take.

The GOOD!
  • All SE DVD catalog releases going forward will have a simultaneous BD release (though Warner has pretty much been doing this already)
  • They're listening to all the noise requests for lossless audio.
  • The BD catchup titles are coming! (hopefully some are improved [hint]ANIMATRIX IN 1080P PLEASE!! and lossless for all!! [hint])
  • Ben-Hur in the works!! (though it's hard for me to get very excited over something that's 12 to 22 months away)
The BAD!
  • The BD catchup titles are coming (bad for my wallet and I probably won't be able to recoup much from my Betamax HD DVD versions on Ebay, I'll probably end up having to give 'em away - dammit! )
  • Heat needs a new transfer (Doesn't seem likely to be out this year and I really was looking forward to this one )
  • Not a whole lot else was revealed catalog-wise for this year. I guess I'll just have to play the wait and see game.
The UGLY!
  • Warner seems to be holding back catalog releases based on the negative feedback from the AVS tier zealots and grain-haters. It's pretty sad that feedback from these dipshits and ass-hats are effecting what titles get (or don't get) released.
Quote:
One of the challenges Warner faces in releasing its classic titles on Blu-ray, is one of expectations. Warner is obviously spending lots of time and money to complete their classic film restorations, in order to get these films looking terrific on DVD and Blu-ray. But no matter how much time and money the studio puts into them, the reality is that classic films are never going to look as good in 1080p as brand new films, or CG titles like Cars. But many who watch these discs don't fully understand that. It's something we've already heard from even a few experienced DVD watchers in recent months. There were some people, for example, who were initially surprised and disappointed at the look on Blu-ray of Sony's Close Encounters. We got more than a few e-mails saying, "Why is there so much grain!?" But savvy cinephiles knew that what they were seeing on Blu-ray was truly special: The film looking better than they'd ever seen it before, even back during its original theatrical run in 1977. People need to understand that classic films are only going to look as good in 1080p as the elements allow. You're going to see grain and other issues. But they're supposed to be there - it's part of the experience. The whole idea behind releasing classic films in high-definition is NOT to make them look like a new CG film, but to recreate the best original experience of seeing these films in an actual theatre. It's not about creating perfect, but rather perfectly right. Because of these initial unrealistic expectations, Warner has decided to delay the release of Clash of the Titans a few months. People have the expectation of perfection right now - perfect images are what's selling high-definition. Clash of the Titans looks perfect for what it is, and again a lot of time and money was spent to make it look as good as it can be. But it's not going to stack up against, say I Am Legend or The Matrix, so the studio is holding it back for a little while.

That's.........just..........fucking............sw ell.

I think something got mixed up, because I don't see anything from The Bits that says TDK is coming to video in Q3. Warner's usual window for the US seems to be between 5 and 6 months from theatrical debut to home video debut. It also seems obvious (to me) that TDK will be their flagship holiday title, and that fits perfectly with a ~5-month window.

Q3 does seem too early for The Dark Knight. I wouldn't be surprised to see Batman Begins released around the time TDK hits theaters but Q3 does seem a little too early. I imagine we'll see a November release.

I really hope they get the rights to the original poster art and swap that for the horrid art on the current dvd. The friggin' castle in the background ain't even in the actual movie, boneheads! Needs some extra content as well, but I'm more than pleased it's on its way. date???

Make that a third. I'll pass on a boxset that contains two films that I'll not be watching. I would contemplate selling them separately online but I don't believe demand for these two films would be very high.

What? Bat-Nipples aren't in high demand?

Are you absolutely sure that Bat-Nipples isn't a treat served at the Children's Matinee in the Life Of Brian? At any rate, I bet they'd be good with Wren's Livers.

Excellent news!

I'll ditto on the wish for Contact and an option to get just the Burton/Keaton (1st two) Batman films of the previous series w/ all the extras.

Can't wait to see what's in stall w/ the various Ultimate Collector's Edition releases. And will they be priced right just like the Blade Runner UCE release?

For me it would depend more on the price. If the boxset is around $80 and the movies are selling between $25 and $35, why not get it? the box will probably be nice and it would be like the other two films are thrown in for free. Of course, that's if that turns out to be the case.

Great news for the fans of the classics (like myself) and Dirty Harry box set is a must buy for me. First two Batman-films are also very cool (I hate "B&R", though), but I never really cared about "Matrix".. I´m also happy to double dip, even when I have most of the classics on SD DVD.

Thanks Warner!

Re: Warner's 2008 Blu-Ray lineup

Well here we are not to far away from being 1/2 way into 2008 and no word from WB about Lethal Weapon 3 & 4 and Superman 3 & 4. It has been just a little frustrating that these titles have not seen the light of day on Blu-ray. It is just wierd that they released 1 & 2 but did not release 3 & 4. I would have thought that they would have offered a box set of Superman and a box set of Lethal Weapon. I am wondering how much longer we will have to wait for a full set of ether title on Blu-ray?

I guess they could be working on releasing a complete set with lossless audio.

Am looking foward to the following titles to be released on Blu-ray:
While a few are scheduled to come out this year I thought I would list them anyway.

Heat
Shawshank Redemption
Pale Rider
2010
My Fair Lady
Contact
Rolling Stones: Bridges To Babylon Tour 97-98
Red Sonja
Pelican Brief
The Green Mile
Falling Down
The Matrix Trilogy
Sphere
Terminator 3 with lossless audio
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Demolition Man
Gone With The Wind
Streetcar Named Desire
Three Kings
US Marshals
Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves
The Glimmer Man
Grumpy Old Men
The Right Stuff
Altered States
Batman Anthology
Coma
The Man Without A Face
Mystic River
Thirteen Ghosts
Tango & Cash
Westworld
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Dirty Harry Movies
The Iron Giant
Absolute Power
Hamlet (1990)
Logan's Run
The Negotiator
Collateral Damage
Eraser
Forever Young
Outbreak
The Postman Always Rings Twice
Murder At 1600
The Fugitive with lossless audio
Memphis Belle
Singin In The Rain
Battlefield Earth

I'm thinking we'll get them when the new film "Superman: the Man of Steel" comes out. They more than likely are just waiting till then to cash in on the mania the new film will bring. Pretty much the same way Warner's handling the Batman franchise Blu-ray release this year.
