Almost Famous: Extended Edition (UK - BD) in News > Releases at DVDActive

This one is region ABC and is around 28.00 from Amazon U.K. or sendit.com has it for around 26.50 shipped to the U.S.

It's a must have catalog title for myself so I thought others may like to know about it.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

Thanks for the heads up. Do you know if it's the Bootleg Cut version or some other extended version? Does it still also include the original theatrical cut?

I already paid a pretty penny 2x for the Bootleg Cut DVD -- my first one had the director's cut disc eaten by a player (and then the rest of it was lent out and never returned). Will probably wait for reviews before taking the plunge on this one...

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

It's the bootleg cut with DD-THD audio.
There is also a Japanese Blu-ray release with an all red background of the same cover from the U.K. release.
I like the Japanese cover much better but don't want to pay the much higher cost to get it.

If I remember right, this was a Dreamworks dvd release in the U.S., and there is no telling when they may get around to releasing this on either format so I ordered my copy from Amazon U.K. around a month ago.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

Thanks. But does it also include the original theatrical cut then (perhaps via seamless branching)? Hope it does since I usually prefer that version for pacing.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

Despite Kate Hudson in panties, someone should really post that cover in the Awful DVD covers thread.

At least it is the original poster art. There were two one-sheets used. This is the poster used internationally. In the U.S., they used the one that appeared on the original Dreamworks DVD.

This cover is the same cover that's been used for the DVD releases except for the U.S. My Korean Region 3 DVD has this cover.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

I didn't know that was the international poster, I guess it makes sense then. Shame the international poster looks like a cheaply photoshopped DVD cover though.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

I'd heard about this release but everything I read previously indicated it was the theatrical cut. Now that it's confirmed to be the Bootleg/extended cut I think I'll be getting it.

I'd normally wait on a US release but since Dreamworks seems to have no intention of releasing any of their A list catalog titles this seems like a no-brainer.

I pre-ordered this through amazon.co.uk. The extended cut is probably my favorite movie of all time. Can't wait to see it in HD.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

This is probably a stupid question, but is region coding an issue with blu-ray movies - will it play in my sony bdp-s1? Also is there any playback issues because of pal/ntsc, or is that a non-factor with high definition?

Since region coding is optional for Blu-ray, it's not used on most Blu-ray titles, US or otherwise. As for this particular disc, region coding is not enabled, so it should play just like any US disc. I have several UK discs (such as "The Tudors") that play perfectly on my US PS3.

It's a non-factor, since PAL/NTSC only applies to standard definition. I've had no issues with the SD features, either.

The disc is region free, as are all Sony's releases in the UK.

There is no available info other than it being the bootleg cut on the U.K., Japanese or German versions.

Perhaps if somone gets there copy soon, they could let us in on any available extras.

Please post your thoughts on P/Q and S/Q when you get it if you would be so kind?

Gladly. I am still waiting for it to show up here. I am hoping it arrives today, if so I will be watching it Sunday night. Rest assured, I will post my thoughts shortly thereafter. However, in the meantime, this mini-review on AVS looks promising:

That AVS member seemed quite impressed with both the P/Q and S/Q.
Look forward to your thoughts as well.

Mine just shipped out yesterday from Amazon U.K. so I won't be seeing it for about a week.

So how does this one look to those of you who got it from overseas? Thanks.

Well, after having the Blu-ray Disc taking quite some time to arrive from the UK, and me being gone last weekend and generally having some difficulty finding time to fit in a 163 minute movie, I have finally watched this release. And...

It's all happening

Regarding the mini-review I linked to on AVS Forum, I wouldn't say I noticed a lot of the '3D pop' he referred to and they seem to be so obessed about over there. I will say that the PQ was excellent and very film-like. There were a couple of really outstanding scenes that had that '3D pop', but I don't normally concern myself with such things. I concern myself with a transfer being an accurate representation of the director's intention, and I have no reason to think that is not the case here.

The SQ shined in many of the Stillwater concert scenes, and while the disc is light on the supplements I generally don't have time to watch them anyway. I wish that this had both cuts of the film done via seemless branching, but in the end I am just happy as hell to have such a great film in HD.

In short, it is quite excellent. Anyone who loves this movie as much as me and my wife do should stop what they're doing right now and order this disc.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

I got a chance to view this tonight at a friend's house. I was extremely impressed with both the video and audio quality. Even with Paramount going Blu, I just can't see them being able to top Sony's international release. I'm getting this one.

Re: Almost Famous extended edition Blu-ray

Thanks for the update, Paul.

Now I've got to decide whether I can live w/out the original theatrical version -- well, I guess I can always double-dip (again) when Dreamworks finally releases this one in the US. So far I've prefered the theatrical version for pacing. I do like all the extra bits added for the extended Bootleg Cut, but I also find the movie slows down a bit more than ideal. And of course, it still doesn't add back the one awesome scene explaining how William convinced his mother to let him go, which might be just as well since it might reeeally drag on pacing -- maybe they should add that scene at the end of credits, if they ever get the rights to use Stairway to Heaven.

Think I need to revisit my DVD to decide on this one.
