I was just doing some checking of things on my system and I put in the two-disc version of Tron. Wow is that title noisy. Even scenes of people's faces are horribly noisy in some scenes. I understand the film is from 1982 and the CGI is old, but there is a huge amount of noise on some frames. This movie is beautiful and needs a serious re-master to remove the noise, WITHOUT wrecking the film. May as well release it on HD/BD too. Anybody else feel the same way?
Going from projector to flatscreen for a while.... :p

The movie is grainy by design. While it was shot in 65mm, the bulk of the film went through a lot of processing. They printed frames to Kodalith cels, rotoscoped, then re-photographed with multiple exposures and backlighting. Combined with optical processes in a lot of shots (for backgrounds), it's just inherent in the original image. Some of the CGI originated on 35mm 8perf VistaVision and even Super-35.

Ok, it could be film grain. When I talk about the objectionable noise, I am not complaining about the CGI scenes. I should clarify. Much of the CGI looks clean. Sure there is noise in the scene scapes and backgrounds, but the CGI and characters in the computer world look pretty clean, but, take a look at dillingers face in the office when talking to Allen. Look at Allen when he is first denied access to his Tron program. Look at Flynn's face when he is first shut-down when using his Clu Progam. Look at their faces on a front projector screen and wow. Noise city. Perhaps it is grain city. And yet many of the other scenes are fine. Anyhow, I guess I am partly verifying what I see on my copy and expressing my appreciation for the movie, and my hopes that a newly re-mastered and cleaned up version comes out in high definition. Of course I wouldn't want it to be over processed, but using a projector or large screen display, have a look at the scenes I mentioned above. If the film overall could be cleaned up without destroying it's feel, then that would be nice.
