I'm probably in for all those, but that 'Golden Years' Collection is a doozy!

Finally... The Man With The Golden Arm!!!

Are the other films in The Golden Years box just as good?

I think I've seen Marriage On The Rocks and The Tender Trap before but I don't remember anything about them...

What about The Early Years set? Is it just for fanatics of ol' blue eyes or are these good films in their own right?

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

'None But The Brave' has Sinatra in the director's chair and it's a very creditable effort, but Minnelli's 'Some Came Running' is the pick of the bunch here IMHO. Fantastic film.

The films in 'The Early Years' set are good fun; I don't think anyone could be disappointed.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

"The Man With The Golden Arm" has been released before on DVD. Not sure which company, may have been a PD.

The only one here I'm really interested in that I don't already own is "Some Came Running" Hopefully it'll be released independent of the box.

Edit: My copy is from some company called "Passport Video", whoever they may be.

It was and as such this is the first 'official' release on DVD.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Would that Paramount would liberate ASSAULT ON THE QUEEN, COME BLOW YOUR HORN, and particularly THE JOKER IS WILD (with cleared song rights and an audio commentary from Mitzi Gaynor) from their vaults. SERGEANTS THREE must be a special deal since it is owned by MGM (aka UA), which should also release JOHNNY CONCHO, NOT AS A STRANGER, and a non-pd dvd of SUDDENLY. Universal owns MEET DANNY WILSON ---essential Sinatra--LAS VEGAS NIGHTS, and THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER (cameo). I am surprised that WB is not releasing THE NAKED RUNNER (and SHIP AHOY would make a terrific bonus feature for a hopefully compleat slimline collection!). All that said, this and rocksrules! Despite the near-catastrophic contents of THE KISSING BANDIT, it is a gorgeous looking film.

I thought Warners had promised to stop bundling new DVDs with previously released films? I already own the original Rat Pack Collection, which includes everything but Sergeants 3.

Terrific news! I've been wanting Some Came Running (one of the great films of the 50s decade) and Tender Trap since the inception of the DVD format! The first two sets are definite buys and I might double dip for the last two sets if the covers are interesting as an excuse to get rid of those awful snapper cases.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I'm wondering whether each film will come in a standard keep case or whether they'll use those ultra thin cases like they did for their Brando and Newman collections. As the films will be available separately, this suggests the usual keep case packaging but does anyone know for sure?

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

It'll be interesting to see comparisons of the WB The Man With the Golden Arm with the 50th Anniversary version put out a few years ago by Hart Sharp. IIRC, they did a fair job with that presentation.

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

If Warner has better film elements to work with, there might be quite a difference.

Too bad Warners is not using Original artwork instead of the new tacky ones for the covers of the DVDs.

How's too bad? Come on, WB is releasing tons of Frank Sinatra movies, and there is always someone complaining about the minimum detail. You should be thanking them instead.

Wonderful! I'll get the Golden Years box, mainly for Some Came Running and The Man with the Golden Arm, the rest are bonuses, including another early 'Scope film - The Tender Trap.

Warner does it again.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Oh Some Came Running is indeed a gem, and I really look forward to seeing it again.

And on the other end of the scale, Kissing Bandit, his big flop is also fun to watch at least once, just for Kathryn Grayson's numbers and the Ann Miller/Cyd Charisse/Ricardo Montalban dance number, added after the film was finished to give it some life.

I wonder what extras will be included in those sets.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I agree, where is NAKED RUNNER? Also it would be nice if they included a remastered widescreen version of FIRST DEADLY SIN.

As for someone mentioning LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER, I still say to this day, Lancaster and Sinatra is not really in the film, but only at the end credits when the make up is removed. But thats been my hunch for years.

Well, in addition to a (presumably) better transfer, it's likely that WB will release it OAR.

For some reason the extras are in a text that is the same colour as the background!? But if you select it you can see it for three of the sets:

The Golden Years

* New Making-of featurettes on:
* The Man With The Golden Arm
* Some Came Running
* The Tender Trap

Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly

* When The Lion Roars documentary
* William Hanna/Joseph Barbera interview on Anchors Aweigh
* Take Me Out To The Ball Game outtake songs

The Rat Pack Ultimate Collection

* Cool Rat Pack Playing Cards
* 10 Behind-the-Scenes Photo Cards
* 8 Color Lobby Card Repros from Sergeants 3
* 24-Page Repro of the Original 1960 Ocean's Eleven Press book

Does anyone know what the price will be on these sets? Did I miss it somewhere in this thread?

I really want to see When The Lion Roars, so I may go for the Sinatra / Kelly set as well. I wish they put that on the Golden Years set instead. Oh well, such is life.

I think it was an interlaced transfer to boot so this is the first quality release of the film we're getting and it's fair to say it's long overdue! It will surely be an improvement over the Anniversary release.

I'll pick up The Golden Years set for sure, still not so sure about the others.

And I'm sorry but I have to agree... this is some TERRIBLE art work!!

What were WB thinking when they designed these sets?

Where's the orig. poster art for TMWTGA??

I hate to say it but these are undoubtedly the ugliest packages to come from WHVE ever!

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

What's so ugly about the new artwork? I never understood why a studio needs to stay with the original artwork, but maybe it's me because I don't place much value on how the artwork looks anyway.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

C'mon Robert, we're all just nitpicking anyways.

They look like ugly colorized movies from a public domain company. Maybe I'm just an overly eccentric art/design geek but for anyone with a sense and understanding of graphic design or poster making, these are terrible. The horrendous coloring, gold frames, font credits. Yuck!

The original Saul Bass poster art for The Man With The Golden Arm is iconic and one of the most graphically appealing modern-era movie poster designs, it should have at least been used for the standalone release. I guess I just don't like cheap revisionism. Some of the most talented artists of their day were hired to market these films to audiences fifty years ago, why go back and redo it now with half-assed photoshop jobs?

It's not preventing me from purchasing or anything silly like that, I'm just pointing out that the artwork for these releases are terrible. And there's no need to be apologetic of the studio. Ugly is ugly and these covers are BAD.

It's simple for me: Art/innovative marketing vs. Thoughtless Advertising.

One is honest, the other is a product commercial. It's no different from book collectors who pay more for earlier pressings or cover variants. The original art is just as instantly recognizable to cinephiles as the original title credits of the film and like any of Bass' other 50's film offerings (Lady in a Cage, etc). I'm somebody who appreciates these small things I guess. Perhaps others don't. I also pay more for 45rpm singles with picture sleeves. And I own many original movie posters and promotional junk from books, movies, classic cartoons, music (mostly 60s garage) and so on. So now I ask, would you want to hang any of these up on your wall?

Your answer should speak for itself.

Not all of us. I understand your point about artwork even though it's no big deal to me from my personal perspective, but I also understand why the studios would go in another direction if they think doing so will improve the marketing of their product beyond the hardcore filmbuffs such as yourself. For the record, I love the original artwork for "The Man with the Golden Arm".

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I completely understand it too; I just don't agree that in this particular case and with a studio like Warner Bros. that such would hold true. Especially when WHVE are generally lauded for their creative and thoughtful packaging of home video products. I just feel, even if it is entirely a commercially conscience decision, that it's a sign of misdirection and lazy thinking when studios have iconic marketing materials at their disposal created often by masterful and even recognized artists, yet chose to write a paycheck to some unnamed employee to turn out a quick photoshop job that's often entirely unreflective of the film itself. In the end, I don't really care SO much. But it would've been nice to have the original art on the covers. Sure it doesn't affect the quality of the product in the end, but if it's available why not offer it... That's just my take.

Anyways, let's reserve further discussion for the actual quality of the sets, transfers, etc.
