SOME CLASSIC BD'S AT LAST FROM FOX

Highdefdigest.com recently reported that at last Fox is giving us some classic titles from their catalogue.Sand Pebbles, Patton and Longest day are to be released on Father's day which they seem to think is the ideal time for such titles. I would have thought that any time would be appropriate, but hey, what would a consumer know.At least we are getting something decent at last on BD,IMO.

Based on such logic, perhaps we can hope for,say, the R&H classics on Mother's Day?

The news is promising, yes, but don't count your Fox Blu-ray Discs before the hatch.

LOL, so true.

Anyway, this will be the first shot on B&W film release from Fox in HD (The Longest Day).

That brings the number of such films to the BD format to a whopping 3 (along with Jailhouse Rock and 20 Million Miles to Earth.)

Hopefully the Sand Pebbles will include the rediscovered longer cut, which is on the new DVD.

This year would be a great one to release the Rodgers & Hammerstein films in Blu-Ray, as this year marks the 65th anniversary of their first collaboration. However, it is obvious that the Todd-AO version of Oklahoma! needs to be restored first. I'll wait to get them as good as they can be. Or they might be saving them to tie in with the 45th anniversary of The Sound of Music in 2010. Hopefully they will include all the extras from the Five-Star Collection and 40th Anniversary editions.

Aint that the truth. I just don't trust title announcements coming from Fox anymore, their fault not mine. I'll get excited over Patton and Longest Day when I start to hear that people actually physically have them in hand.

Patton is one of the best looking movies in 70mm and should look absolutely stunning if Fox uses their 4k master of the movie, same goes for The Sand Pebbles and I epxpect The Longest Day to be of the same high quality.

This announcement makes me very happy and I can only hope that this time Fox will keep the release date.

Let's just hope they don't mess up the subtitle positions on "The Longest Day" this time around. For goodness sake, keep them in the image area where they belong, not in the black bars!

Digital Bits says that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is also coming to BD in May/June '08.

List of the extras on the Sand Pebbles states "13 roadshow scenes." Whether there is an option to watch them in the movie I have no clue.

Agreed

One thing I like about my Toshiba HD DVD player is that it allows me to re-position player generated subs into the image area via the ABCD buttons on the remote. I can also change the size.

This is crucial for those of us who use anamorphic lenses to have the subtitles within the image area. My Panasonic BD30 BD player doesn't have this function

Sony titles are famous for having subs in the black bars

A1 and the XA2. I use the A1 as a backup. Both are excellent upconverting players as well.

While I have not been big on older films in the past becuase the video quality just seemed to be lacking. Now that we have HDM and the films have never looked better. I am now actually excited about owning the older films and am looking foward to adding them to my HD library.

So as soon as the release the following I am all over it.
