And as I stated in the review thread wrt the new Criterion blog response, I just don't buy it that TLE was originally composed for 2:1 as Storaro claimed unless someone can provide better, more conclusive evidence to support that claim. I would've been more inclined to accept his claim if it looks like the entire movie has been center cropped (w/out any notably bad effects), but the evidence (and his potential motive/agenda) just don't add up...

If it is pan and scanned as you suggest, then I think that makes Storaro's claim that it was intended to be 2:1 even more dubious. Cinematographers have too much work to do on a film, there is no time to consider how to pan and scan the frame.

Re: Statement concerning THE LAST EMPEROR (Criterion Collection)

"My recollections of Jackson's comments on this (from the EE commentaries? not sure) is that the theatrical cuts were what he thought worked best for general audiences who may or may not be familiar with the books, while the EEs were his "gift" for hard-core fans of the books. So he considers them both "director's cuts."

I'm pretty sure Jackson referred to the theatrical cuts as "better film making."

Re: Statement concerning THE LAST EMPEROR (Criterion Collection)

I´m quite late into this thread, but did I get this right: "Criterion"-version is now in 2.00:1 (basically cropped) vs the OAR 2.35:1?

Storaro did the same with "Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier" (from original 2.35:1 to 2.00:1). Someone should really stop the guy, dammit. I want the OAR 2.35:1, you don´t just "change your mind" suddenly and re-frame the Oscar-winning ("Best Cinematography") film..

I have huge respect of Storaro as an artist, but he has lost the ball with these DVD-releases..

Re: Statement concerning THE LAST EMPEROR (Criterion Collection)

Well, Gary Tooze @ DVDBeaver.com has added screen caps from Criterion's Blu-ray of TLE at his site.

The framing looks identical to the Criterion SD release of a few months ago.

The screencaps looks stunning. If only...

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Yes, the Blu-ray review copy came today, and the aspect ratio is identical to the SD-DVD. I won't actually get to watch the entire set until Saturday, but naturally I was curious if anything had changed. Sadly, it hasn't.

Re: Statement concerning THE LAST EMPEROR (Criterion Collection)

Joel, I got over it just fine. And as a result it's a no sale for me on BD and one less BD copy sold for Criterion. Two many other OAR BD titles to buy and not enough money to go around. IMHO Storaro obviously doesn't understand the capabilites of BD and has apparently never heard of CIH projection.

And doesn't realise that the aspect ratio of The Last Supper is 1.91:1, not 2:1 as he thinks it is.
