I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

I would welcome a photochemical PLANET OF THE APES on BR, with or without supplements. It is one of the great, great films and merits a special edition treatment. There is so much to say about it, at least one commentary, probably two, is called for. Of course I would like to buy it separately from the sequels. As for the sequels, I would particularly like to see CONQUEST restored to its original length -- something like 17 minutes were cut, as I recall hearing in the documentary Behind the Planet of the Apes.

And please please please DO NOT package the original masterpiece with the trivial obnoxious remake.

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

This is fantastic news!

The only film from the Apes series that I don't care for is Battle, so I suppose I'd also like the option of individual releases. But if I can only get the other 3 sequels by buying a set then so be it.

Oh and Fox...........don't skimp on the bonus features this time.........assholes.

BTW - All the Apes films are showing on the MonstersHD channel this month and they look spectacular.

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

I bought the limited (SD DVD) "Ape head-set" with all the films etc back in the days, but bring me the BD-box set and I´ll happily double dip.

And yes, while I like many remakes (or at least they can be fun to watch every once in while, I´m not *that* picky), Burton really messed up PotA.. Huge budgets and Burton just doesn´t mix (After Batman-films, that´s).

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

While I did purchase the original POTA on DVD I just never got around to purchasing the rest of the DVD's. I would love to own all 5 POTA's on Blu-ray and hope they release it soon.

Planet of the Apes
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Battle for the Planet of the Apes

I do own the remake of POTA on Blu-ray but honestly feel the original is a much better movie than the remake. I keep looking for these films on Blu-ray but it is my guess that we may not see them until 2009.

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

I never did get around to buying the Ape Head boxset....even though I wanted it badly. In retrospect, that was a good thing since it allows me to pickup this Blu-ray boxset with no regrets....well, maybe one - I wanted that Ape head....

One thing though....FOX better put in all the extras previously released! I'm sick of them skimping on (or simply leaving out altogether)the extras on their previous BD releases.

EDIT 07/14/08 - Since this post I have indeed purchased the Ape Head Set....Amazon's Deal Of The Day a couple of weeks ago was too good to pass up, and I have determined that as much as I like the films...I really don't need to double-dip on these ones on BD except maybe the original film.
Recently watched- Magnum P.I.: Season 7, BSG: Season 4.0[BD], Starship Troopers 3: Marauder[BD], The Happening[BD], Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (IMAX)[BD]

Currently watching- Heroes: Season 1[BD], Michael Palin: Pole To Pole, Battlestar Galactica[BD], Magnum P.I.: Season 8

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

I can't wait for the original, but I concur on the extras - there were too many genuinely good supplements on the 2 disc SD set to leave any of them off on the Blu-Ray. Thankfully I don't think classics have quite the double-dippability of more modern titles (save for The Sound Of Music), so hopefully we will get everything in on nice BD50 package. I still haven't see a single one of the sequels, but I've been meaning to forever.

If they port all the bonus material from the existing DVDs - and they should! - I hope that they'll at least offer the great Heston / Edward G. Robinson test footage in a new HD transfer.

I'm going to have to go on the assumption that this was stated in jest.

If it's not in jest, then obviously this person has never seen a projected 35mm print of this film, which blows any 1080p HD presentation away.

Great news. Let´s hope that this will be true. PotA-films are very high on my Blu-ray-list (not including the Burton remake, though).

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

Let's hope the joker who hates film and film grain and scrubbed PATTON and LONGEST DAY clean into video game territory isn't in charge of this one.

EDIT: I'm not bashing video games with that statement. I'm talking about the "look" of the final product.

Re: I want Planet of the Apes(1968) Blu-Ray

Hopefully Fox will port over every extra from the existing 35th Anniversary DVD release. And also no DNR, on a BD-50 and with VC1/MPEG4 encoding. Lossless original audio and perhaps even a booklet?
When will Fox learn they're the price gougers for Blu-ray software? I saw PREDATOR at Circuit City the other day for $34.99. I'd understand if they were asking for that price if it had every single extra from the 2-Disc Edition DVD but no dice.
Back on topic, I'm hoping the rest of the four films in the series will also have a bit of extras. As of course there might've been a documentary on the series besides the excellent Behind the Planet of the Apes. All BD-50's please and no shortchanges!
I'd certainly buy this and I don't even own a Blu-ray player yet!

Cassyw, I resent your video game statement since I love film grain and not all gamers are idiots. Well, I am an idiot but not in the sense you're implying. There've actually been some video games I've played which were far superior compared to alot of the current crap Hollywood releases now. Dare I say BioShock and The Orange Box? HALO series is a pile of rubbish and only rides on the coattails of its popularity.

Huh??? I was not insulting video gamers or video games. PATTON and THE LONGEST DAY look like video games now, Like they were created in a PC (ala Final Fantasy). They are absent grain and look nothing like film. How you thought I was bashing video gamers or video games is beyond me. I was not in any way shape or form trying to say anything bad about video games or gamers. Not at all.

I got your meaning. I know exactly where your coming from, and agree 100%. I love film, and I love video games. When studios try to eliminate the "film look" they are in fact ruining the film. I'm actually worried about this release on Blu-Ray now.

I can not wait for the Planet Of The Apes series to hit Blu-ray. And I am one of those who will not put up with DNR being applied to this title or any other title on Blu-ray. If this title has DNR used to strip grain from it I will go as far as saying NO SALE!

Tai Seng should be sued into the farthest reaches of space and time. Off topic but I also don't support their company practices either. Don't buy any Tai Seng!

Back on topic, maybe there'll be some exclusive BR content if there's a box set. Perhaps a bonus disc?

And FOX, I want all the extras from the following link ported over to the Blu-ray. No jerking around or I won't upgrade.

Ray,

I'll be happy with a ton of new special features(keep the old SE for the others) but it will be pretty sad if the BD is a bare bones.

That's what I was implying too. Port over all the old extras and have a ton of new ones too. An incentive to upgrade. Hopefully a 2-Disc release? It'd he pitiful and depressing if FOX decided to release this bare bones. Agreed.
