Ya know-I noticed that I am buying more indie label music than major label these days

Tulsa*, Yeasayer, Kate Tucker, Black Mountain, Blockhead, Goldfrapp, Gay and Terry Woods, Evenscense, Azam Ali, to name a few of the groups whom ive bought of late.
(YEASAYER is a group to watch)

I was always puzzled how these small labels could have the elaborate packaging that many do.

It was explained to me . The label/artist gets a whopping 50% of retail vs. what I was told that the Majors take 75%-or more.

Plus there just isnt much new, exciting or risk-taking from the major labels these days-but they blame lackluster sales on pirating-which is bunk.

*funniest label name: Park the Van records;
You should give all of the above a listen be it from iTunes or Amazon

Re: Ya know-I noticed that I am buying more indie label music than major label these days

Yup. The only music I've purchased in the past year were some classical recordings, an album by the Black Keys (on the nonesuch label, never heard of it) and the Niggy Tardust download (just because I like the idea - paid the $5, haven't had a chance to listen to it).

The music industry is in a sad place right now. I haven't heard a must have song from a major label in quite a while. I know some younger guys who actually don't own any music at all, be it CD, mp3 or illegal download, they just don't have anything out there that inspires them to step away from their gaming/movies. Either no one is making great music today (very unlikely) or the old paradigm is totally broken.

I Dj and the only rock music I like anymore is very little; No Doubt, STP Amy Winehouse, Disturbed and Coldplay to name the only current or upcoming releases/tours I care about.

Everything else I like is dance or trendy pop/hip-hop that I play at clubs or gigs.

If you are interested in a good selection of independent label music downloads, I HIGHLY recommend eMusic MP3 Music and Audiobook Downloads. I got a free trial offer through NetFlix and LOVE it! I pay $9.99 for 30 downloads every month. They use unprotected MP3s (like Amazon) and have exposed me to great alt-pop/rock artists like New Pornographers, Of Montreal and Apples In Stereo.
