The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

I may have to get King of California just because one of my nephews worked on the film as a P.A. and is listed in the credits (with his name misspelled; he was not pleased). Not a bad film, either; Evan Rachel Wood can do no wrong in my book.

I hope Netflix gets the urated Lake Placid 2 since I thought the first one was great cheesy fun. Any thoughts on renting Invasion? I seem to think it was pretty much universally panned and I remember it tanked at the box office.

Mike, I saw all four parts and found it very good... even the one about the game shows! It was really interesting to learn about these early years, most of which, I was not yet around for.

Anyway, I'll be picking up my missing seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm! Thanks guys!

Oh, and Veronica Mars S3 thanks to Cameron's thread pointing that out.

You just know your local rental places (Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, etc.) will have that in their "previously viewed" bins before you know it.

I keep hearing that Hollywood Video stores are closing in different places. Was there some news that I missed? Are they downsizing?

Mike,

The shortest possible story on Hollywood Video (and Movie Gallery) is that they filed for bankruptcy and have been shutting down stores. Movie Gallery bought Hollywood in 2005...and found themselves with huge debt. And competing with Blockbuster and Netflix rent by mail programs.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 1-29-2008

Thanks, Jason.

Netflix seems to be having quite an impact on the rental industry.

I've got one guy I work with that has absolutely no rental places near where he lives...and that's in a suburb of Albany. The last Mom & Pop shop closed a few months ago...and now the HV has closed. There's no Blockbuster near him and the grocery stores have given up on rentals altogether (maybe there are some of those red box units still around. I don't know.).

It just seems strange since I thought the rental industry was still going strong. He rents a fair amount. Maybe Netflix is in his future?

For him, Mike, I would have thought Netflix would be the first thing he looked into. Between the movies by mail and the ability to watch content online, I find it far more cost effective than any Blockbuster plan with in store returns. Heck, this month alone I've gotten six movies watched via mail...with the one at a time plan.

Mike , not to Hijack the thread but it's happening around me as well, the Hollywoods effectively killed all our M&P then they themselves have closed sown all their stores in out pretty busy area. People laught that Rental Downloading is Years away but I wonder.

Got the HD-DVDs of Shaun of the Dead and Bourne Supremacy with BB's B1G1 to satisfy my zombie/romantic comedy desires and complete the Bourne trilogy, respectively. Probably shouldn't buy anymore HD-DVDs, should I? Maybe just The Last Starfighter and then I wait and see.

Interesting discussion on rental stores. I work at the biggest one in San Francisco and I know it's a foregone conclusion that we won't last. I think we'll be one of the last ones to close though, thanks to customer loyalty and our gigantic selection. I try not to dwell on the feeling of impending doom...

Re: Weekly RoundUp 1-29-2008

Thanks as always Mike & Patrick.

It's definitely going to be a busy rental week for me:
  • The Comebacks
  • The Invasion
  • The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters
  • King of California
Additional rentals for the kids will be:
  • Daddy Day Camp
  • Twitches Too
I'd better update MyQ PDQ.

I'm considering buying El Cid SE as a blind buy.

Lastly, Groundhog Day is one of my favorite comedies of all time. I'm going to read the reviews (thanks for the links Mike) and see if it's worth buying again.

As an aside, my wife was born and raised about an hour from Punxsutawney. We visited her family in August 2005 and went sight-seeing in Punxsutawney. At the time, my step-son Matt (age 12 then) was a huge fan of Groundhog Day and would frequently quote lines from the movie. We spoofed some scenes from the movie in front of the Visitor's Center. In honor of the 15th Anniversary of Groundhog Day, I uploaded (on YouTube) two short video clips (20 secs each) of our trip. Here are the links in case anyone wants to check them out:

YouTube - Punxsutawney Groundhog Day 1

YouTube - Punxsutawney Groundhog Day 2

. . . and yes I realized after the fact that these clips are MAR (oops).
