iTunes 7.6 for Windows resource hog?

Since upgrading to iTunes 7.6, the program has been consistently sucking up 50 percent of my CPU in task manager, slowly the entire system down, and making song playback increasingly irratic.
What has changed to suddenly require 60,000 K in memory usage and intense CPU computation?

Re: iTunes 7.6 for Windows resource hog?

I just checked my CPU in the task manager with iTunes 7.6 running, and iTunes is only averaging 6.7% useage of my CPU and about 38,000K of memory.

Interesting. I've been keeping track of it since the problem reached a peak earlier this morning, and it does indeed seem to fluctuate. Memory usage has been as high as 90,000 K but is currently only 29,000 K with only 4 percent CPU usage. I wonder what causes the fluctuation? And why did it start with the newest version?

I'm just happy it supports Vista 64 now!

Mine has never used that much of my resources. But then again, I only use iTunes to sync up with my ipod and transfer new songs (which only takes a couple of minutes). For any other .mp3 playback I use winamp.

Apparently better than it supports XP x86! I haven't been able to replicate the 50 percent CPU drain since (though a quick Google search revealed plenty of others had), but I'm still having problems with skipping. IIRC, I had similar problems with iTunes 5 which were resolved in iTunes 6.

I just noticed this problem too. It only seems to do this when I leave an iPod attached to the computer with iTunes NOT running. I just killed it, but I think it was the "iPod Servive" service that was clocking all the cpu.

Ressurecting this thread because I just updated to iTunes 7.6.2.9 and the problem seems to have resolved itself. The installer is once again bulkier, but the CPU usage is sitting around 2-3% and often 0% instead of consistently in the double digits. Highly recommended.
