Zaireeka - Playing 4 CDs in sync.

Zaireeka is a Flaming Lips album that is 4 CDs played simultaneously. Besides the obvious 4 CD player setup, i was wondering what creative solutions you the semi-pros might have.

One idea I was thinking of: ripping the CD to MP3, putting on a computer, opening them all at once. BUT I'd rather have them playing from different places in the house. Each CD on it's own channel. How could I output them to separate surround channels. Is there a digital audio format readily accessible that supports surround channels?

If so, then theoretically I can put them all into different channels in one file and a surround sound system would do the rest? Hmmm....

I haven't heard any solutions on the surround front, but you should be able to rip all 4 CDs and open them in a sound editor with multitracking capabilities, like Adobe Audition or Audacity. You'll have to check if Audacity supports surround, but it's open source.

Re: Zaireeka - Playing 4 CDs in sync.

The more conventional approach is to get four CD players that accept RS232 control and external synchronization. We do it on occassion at work with DVD players - although I will point out it's easier to get a DVD player that'll crystal lock to an external black-burst and SMPTE time code...

However, I do know that at one time, CD players that would lock to SMPTE time code were available; IMAX theaters used to use 'em.

Re: Zaireeka - Playing 4 CDs in sync.

An alternate low tech approach is to get four boom boxes of the same model that have remote controls and use one remote to start all four. Granted, you'd have to ensure that the remote's IR path is wide enough to turn on all four @ once, especially since the recommended placement for each player is N, E, S, W. Just an idea, though.

I didn't realize one remote can control all of one model. Awesome. Thanks.
