There's a search function... might want to use that before you post a dozen threads in succession.

Tell The Weinstein Company to release Richard Williams' animated masterpiece The Thief and the Cobbler on DVD in Panavision widescreen and uncut! See and hear what you're missing from their Bitsy Award winner of Worst Standard Edition DVD of 2006 on YouTube!

Re: When is Paramount releasing 1492 and LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR on dvd?

Well is Paramount ever going to give “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” a decent release? And I certainly hope is NOT RELEASED on this cheap budget label, called - what is it - Legend Films!?! I'd almost rather make do with my Laser than have this film released on DVD in a real half-assed manner. (Excuse my French)

I have not been impressed with Legend Films transfers of the Paramount title so far (for JEKYLL & HYDE, ONE AND ONLY), as well as the lack of extras, so hopefully Paramount will give both to Criterion. I assume the music rights issue is whats preventing this from coming out.

I don't know which Legend releases you've seen, but the ones I have look and sound great! I was watching Mandingo last night and was very impressed with the encode/ compression. It looked very filmlike and the credits were almost as sharp and as stable as you would see if it were HD. Looked like there was just a hair of EE (and I only noticed it in the credits) otherwise two big thumbs up from me. It's not a pretty looking film, but it didn't look digitally processed which is the bigger issue with me.
Now if you are talking about the lack of special features and ammeneties like trailers and nice jacket...well yeah you don't get that stuff, but I would happily sacrifice those to have Goodbar on my shelf right now next to King Of The Gypsys, The One and Only, and the others that I didn't expect to see the light of day 6 months ago.
A big round of applause to Legend from me. My only disappointment is after the next wave they don't have any other Paramount titles even in the pipe. This could be all we'll see.

Most of these Legend titles have been so marginal, and their retail distribution so spotty, that I can't believe that they're selling well enough to justify a second wave of titles.

Looking for Mr. Goodbar made its way to VHS without any music substitutions, so I can't imagine that would be the reason it hasn't appeared on DVD.

re:" Looking For Mr. Goodbar made its way to VHS without any music substitutions, so I can't imagine that would be the reason it hasn't appeared on DVD"

Actually, just because music rights were cleared for VHS doesn't mean they were cleared for DVD. Please remember that when VHS was in full throttle, no one knew from DVD. Music artists license their music from medium to medium. For example, Frank Sinatra permitted his version of Have Your Self A Merry Little Christmas to be used in the film of The Victors (1963). He did NOT license the song to be used in any other medium relating to the film, which is why the song did not appear on the soundtrack album of The Victors. If there were ever to be a DVD release of The Victors on DVD, Sony (which holds the rights to the film) would have to renegotiate with the Sinatra estate for use of the song in the film or else replace it with something else, something fans of the film would be unhappy with.

There are many different pop songs used on the soundtrack of Looking For Mr. Goodbar and Paramount would have to negotiate with everyone of those artists (or their estates, if dead) to get permission to use the songs for any DVD release of Looking For Mr. Goodbar. Of course, for any current film made today, all contracts would include use of the music for the DVD release. However, say in 15 years there's a new home video format, music rights would again have to be cleared for whatever format that would be.

Sounds like we'll NEVER see Goodbar on DVD. I guess my P&S Laser will have to be IT!!

I want Summer and Smoke. That's a damn good movie.

Re: When is Paramount releasing 1492 and LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR on dvd?

Has Paramount officially stopped releasing catalog titles? It seems that, unless it has something to do with John Wayne, Tom Clancy, 70s musicals, Coppola, or the USS Enterprise, we won't be getting any movies from them on DVD that weren't filmed before the current calendar year.

Sometimes I ask why bother speculating at all? It's nice they've licensed titles to Criterion and Legend (who knows if that deal will yield more titles) but they're sitting on a goldmine and apparently they don't know how to market it.

Re: When is Paramount releasing 1492 and LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR on dvd?

1492 is available in PAL region 4, Australia, in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby digital 5.1. I have a copy and the video and audio are excellent. This version includes expanded scenes that maybe add a minute or two to the running time. I have always believed this was the perfect movie to re-master into an extended version running 3+ hours. Who knows maybe it will happen someday, but for now the region 4 is the best version available.

There's also a Korean Region 3 NTSC of it. I might buy it though just as an interim until the great Charlie de Lauzirika gets his hands on this Ridley Scott film. And that means a VERY good thing which would entail a multi-disc set.

Re: When is Paramount releasing 1492 and LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR on dvd?

I just finished watching the Pal 4 dvd of 1492 and it is quite a good dvd. What I can not figure out is that it plays on my Pioneer dv 400 player but region 2 will not play on it. Whats up with that?

Re: When is Paramount releasing 1492 and LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR on DVD?

The DVD for 1492 for Australia is region 4 PAL. Not sure what you mean that your Pioneer 400 won't play region 2? Your player must be region free and if you are using an LCD the TV is multi-system able to display the PAL signal.

I looked at the dvd and shows a globe with the word "all" which must be all regions.
