No sound from subwoofer/used Audyssey on my new TX-SR705

I'm not very knowledgeable on all this stuff and I need help. I just got the OnkyoTX-SR705 and ran the Audyssey. It didn't recognize the subwoofer, no sound emitted. I went in and manually turned on the subwoofer. Still nothing. I have the NHT SA-2 Amplified subwoofer and I have turned the volume all the way up. When I run the 705 test tone I get nothing from the subwoofer. I had no problems with the subwoofer before.
Any help/suggestions on what the problem is?
I read in a previous post about manually changing speakers and LF??? I don't know what this means.
Thanks,

Re: No sound from subwoofer/used Audyssey on my new TX-SR705

It sounds like a problem with the cable between the sub and the receiver, or (don't be offended, plenty have made this mistake) you connected it to the wrong connection. Those receivers have so many connections, it is easy to hook up the sub to the wrong one. Take a long, close look. I hooked up a 605 for someone a few months ago, and it I really had to look for the sub output.

Re: No sound from subwoofer/used Audyssey on my new TX-SR705

I've doubled checked that and I have it plugged in to the subout on the 705.

Is there any way I can check the subwoofer to see if there is a problem with it?

Re: No sound from subwoofer/used Audyssey on my new TX-SR705

You can verify the cable and subwoofer by connecting the sub cable to one of the left/right main preamp outputs. Then selet any plain stereo source, such as the radio. This will send the same full band signal to the sub that is being sent to the corresponding left/right speaker.

Does the NHT amp have an auto turn on setting? It's possible the 705's not sending enough signal to wake the NHT up. If so, you'd need to set to "always on" if possible.

Lastly, somewhere in the manual, there are instructions for doing a "hard reset" of the 705. This has been known to fix a number of glitches on receivers of all brands.

I'm not familiar with this unit, but some receivers require setting the main speakers to small in order to pass a signal to the subwoofer.

Re: No sound from subwoofer/used Audyssey on my new TX-SR705

Joe brings up a point. I seem to remember on the 605 if you set all the speakers to large the sub turns off, even if you previously turned it on. By default, virtually any speaker system should have all speakers set to small anyway, particularly if the receiver lets you set different crossovers for all speakers as I believe the 705 does.

Plus, it is against forum rules to post the same topic multiple times. You should take it upon yourself to point out your mistake to admin and ask them to close the other thread on this topic.

Also, Audyssey has a tendency to set all speaker to large, even though they shouldn't be. There is an explanation of this from THX in this forum. Just do a search.

Re: No sound from subwoofer/used Audyssey on my new TX-SR705

On my old pioneer receiver and the new yamaha it has an option to set the subwoofer to on and send all frequencies below a certain point to the sub in addition to the LFE effects. Speakers that it determines as large also get the bass. After you run the microphone setup try and find something along the lines of '"bass management" and set that up. That being said, when you run the microphone setup you should hear the subwoofer regardless of how the system is set up. Pull the RCA plug out of the back of the receiver and touch the center of it. You should hear a good loud hum from the sub. If not then start looking and the cable and the sub itself. If it does hum then the reciever is messup up or it is plugged into the wrong place. Some receivers have a set of preamp outputs with all channels marked (front left, front right, sub, center etc.) and also an identical set which are marked decoder. Those are for inputs from an external decoder and will not output to a sub. My Yamaha is even more insediuos. Since I have to reach behind and feel for the jacks or use a mirror and a flash light to see them, I then reference off of the instruction manual to locate what I want. The manual has the external decoder inputs and the preamps outputs backwards from the receiver. Isn't life fun.

Thanks,

I know you have looked, could you do it again... JohnRice may have been correct.

Have you looked to see which of the TWO labeled sub-woofer RCA jacks that you currently have your sub plugged into. I think the one in the middle is set up for your DVD output and the other one is for pre-amp out connector. They are both labeled 'subwoofer'.

good luck.
