Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

I amaze myself lol.

Seriously, I'm this close *holding up finger and thumb* to buying a PS3.

In fact I pretty much have committed myself to the dirty deed. This is simply because of one 'little' announcement. Otherwise I would never consider doing this.

It won't be so bad, I traded in my Nintendo DS, and some games, and a bunch of the HD-DVD that I gathered for free in various ways, and I ended up with $227 in Gamestop credit. I still have about $100 in Best Buy gift card money to burn on a remote, and a movie or two.

I turn 20 at the end of the month so there will be some extra birthday money. So I could come out with a PS3 without spending much extra money. I even ordered a cheap HDMI cable off the net in preparation.

I would just feel rediculous feeling somewhat fiscally irresponsible.

By the way, heck if I'm EVER moving out, I've been collecting my home theater in my room for 4 years, and I've never been more proud. I started as a sophomore in highschool. Living at home is the only way I can afford this stuff.

Whatever, jeeez it hasn't even been a week.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

I'd recommend the remote as a purchase as well. The ps3 controller is somewhat annoying in that there's no automatic shut off, so if you use it for movie playback, you wind up needlessly running down the battery.

Don't bother with an extended warranty, ps3s are very well built with a very low defect rate, you're covered for one year at any rate, when you purchase your unit, ask gamestop for a copy of the receipt, if you have a repair sony may ask you to submit one.

Life is short and unpredictable. I say go for it and enjoy the movies as best as you can. The PS3 remote is a good investment since you will be using the PS3 for substantial movie watching.

Averry, you need only ask yourself one question: Do I care about movies in Hi-Def ? If the answer is what I think it is, then, go buy that PS3, man! As Sanjay said, life is short. Life without good entertainment is short and boring.

You can get the remote for free with the purchase of a couple of Blu titles, there should be a form in the box. Granted, you'll have to wait for it.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

Well, apon read your advice (I hate you guys).

I already bought one.

I went by Best Buy, picked up 28 Days Later, and 28 Weeks Later, and a remote all with gift card money so that was good.

I then picked up the 40 GB pack.

I'm a little mad, because the Spider Man 3 included with the system is only the movie, it's not the two disc set. Whatever, I dont' like Spiderman but i was interested in having it as part of the collection. Instead I look at it like a bit of a bastard child.

I haven't hooked it up yet. I will tonight, I'm just on a small break from school.

One sort of good thing about Blu-Ray, they still dont' have all that many movies that I wanted too bad. I want to get Superbad, and to a lesser exten the Pirates movies, but other than that, it wont' be toooo hard to abstain from future purchases.

I do know that it is the futur of movies on hi def so I'm no too worried about having problems in the future.

There's also a coupon for $10 off in the 2 disc set standard DVD of 3 (dont know about the single disc) and a $5 off printable coupon floating about on the net. I got 3 for $5 with those helps . YMMV on the printable coupon since I've heard some people getting shot down since it's not "original." Some have even used them at ToysRUs.

Unless you're talking about that Pirates porn title that somebody did a mockup of on Blu in another thread.... .

Cheers.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

My timing was pretty good. I went blu 1 month ago exactly. Purchased the Panasonic BD30 and quite happy with it (minus onboard decoding). I have about 7 blu titles thus far.

However I feel no buyers remorse for supporting HD DVD for the past year. I have the Tosh A1 and over 30 titles. Even though they may become obsolete soon I still will enjoy them for years to come. My player isn't going anywhere nor are the movies.

To me it's no different than someone still enjoying their old laserdisc collection. In fact I'm hoping for drastically reduced prices on HD DVD players and movies soon. I will probably buy another player as a backup to the A1 if the prices do go down substantially.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

I am going to wait until a reasonably priced, true 2.0 standalone comes out.
I know the PS3 is the bomb and should be upgraded to 2.0 down the road but I have a couple problems with it.

No way to get it to work with my universal control system and I can't stand not being able to see the elapsed time on the face. Picky I know but there you have it.

Well.

Bluetooth on it is cool.

It matches my TV and speakers.

Right now, Blu-Ray performs just like HD-DVD. I'm not blown away by any means, it just sort of meets expectations.

I hate SpiderMan 3 so much.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

By all means, keep your eyes on Amazon. I thought their BOGO's were over with the "announcement", but they ran another one on Sunday/Monday.

The BOGO's are the only reason I started turning Purple a few weeks ago. Didn't even have a player at the time, but the titles and prices were too good to say "no". At the time, I justified it by telling myself that both formats would survive for a very long time...why deprive myself of great hi-def titles?

Now look where we are.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

You can get PotC 1 for free w/ the 5-free BD rebate good for just about all BD players, including PS3. No need to pay for that one.

I was wondering about using that PotC 3 upgrade $10 coupon w/ the TRU BOGO. So are you saying they accept the coupon on top of the BOGO? I already bought PotC 3 w/ some other $10-off deal from Amazon, but I'm tempted to do this deal also and just hock off the extra copy or something. Would be nice to get Casino Royale cheaply that way.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

I watched a little 28 Weeks Later, and I must say, the DTS core on the DTS HD MA sounds Niiiiiiiiice.

If only I had a new receiver eh?

No. Not happening.

I think I have nice speakers, but I don't know if they would be able to provide a difference if the audio was better. They are infinity primus speakers. I have the smaller 5.1 set, including the 300 watt powered subwoofer.

I bought all of it piece by piece in high school. Best investment I ever made, it gets used every day for music, or movies, or TV. Records sound sooooo good too.

Anyways, isn't my mini set up cute?

I bought the center speaker last, and I wasn't sure how to set it up. So I took a piece of wood that we used to build our patio, and spray painted it to match the speakers. It's only a 23 in. TV, and luckily the height of the speakers perfectly matched the height of the TV. It also works perfectly as a shelf, which was good because I don't have any room for the PS3 other than right there. I had to move some of my HD-DVD's.

Also the record player!!!

I went Blu on Monday. After the announcment I just had to buy a PS3 and get some sort of hi-def on my newly purchased 46" Sony LCD. I only have 2 movies but I'm blown away by the quality.

What'd you get?

After checking out 28 days later, I can't say that an upgrade from the SD-DVD would be worth it. I never bought the SD DVD though, so it wasn't an issue, plus it was gift card money.

I thought about picking that up during the last Amazon BOGO, but read a review that suggested the BD was not noticeably better than the SD DVD. In fact, the review rating suggested to me that this is one of the worst PQ amongst BDs -- worse than controversial cases like BS Dracula. Basically, the review mentioned that the fault lie in the source content and even pointed out how the ending looks much better due to likely different source being used. So definitely do not judge general BD quality based on that transfer.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

The cool thing about the PS3 is the entertainment hub that it is. It's glitchfree playback is nice as well especially if you are dealing with a 360 HD drive.

I could play not a single game on this thing and feel like I stole it.

That said, it's not for everyone.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

I went Blu on Monday as well. Best Buy had the Sony BDP-300 promotion - I got to pick out 5 Blu-Ray discs in store and still send away for the 5 free by mail promotion.

I already had purchased the Toshiba A2 back in October and don't have any regrets with it. I was shocked Best Buy let me pick out any 5 in store Blu-Ray discs, I picked up:

Blade Runner
Pan's Labyrinth
A Clockwork Orange
Casino Royale
Layer Cake

I am still mulling over the 5 by mail thing - there is a few there I like.

Figured with 10 free movies it shouldn't sting that bad to jump in. This player will work for me while I am stuck with my 720p dinosaur - hopefully upgrade to a 1080P next year.

Hardly surprising. I had a thread here awhile ago called Pointless HD releases and cited 28 Days Later as one of those, as it was shot on DV.

Andrew, is that an ION Audio USB turntable on the left in your picture? I've been thinking about getting one and wanted some feedback.

That's a nice haul for the player, especially Blade Runner(!). Is that player still <=$300 at BB?

No the player was $399 - they told me I could pick out any BD that retailed for $34.95 or less. I was shocked they had Blade Runner listed for that price, I would of thought it would be a lot more.

I figured all in all I got 8 movies that would be permanent in my collection - roughly worth $200-$225 IMHO, so I got the player for $200.00 is how I rationalized it.

I believe this player's equivalent is selling at Costco for 279.00 with a couple of movies in the box, even though this is an entry level model with mixed reviews, I've been thinking of getting one 'till the finalized 2.0 models are reasonably priced.

Yes it is actually.

It has a really nice big cartridge, good counter weight, and anti skate.

It sounds really good and has a phono and an RCA out with a gain knob.

I haven't tried any of the USB funtions but as a record player it does work really well. There's no cover for it, and no auto play.

I throw on some dolby pro logic music, and let it rip. Nice warm analog sound that you just can't beat.

Were you going to use it for the USB functions or just more as a turn table? Alot of the new vinyl comes with codes to download the albums. I'm actually more into buying new vinyl than collecting old stuff. All of my albums are of recent pressing. I don't have many yet, but it's growing.

I just ordered the 40gb model from newegg. I have a Fujitsu 120gb sata laptop drive sitting here waiting!

I've a decent setup so I'm looking forward to hooking it up, playing some Assasains Creed, watching some BD movies, and just generally upgrading my DVD player!

Oddly, I have zero interest in PS3 games right now.

Anything that's on both 360, and PS3, I'll go Xbox because Xbox live is flat out better, and achievement points are oddly, really addicting. I also like the Xbox controller more.

I donno, I really bought it only for Blu-Ray, and games are just a maaaaayybe down the road kind of thing right now.

Well, I've not owned a console since the original Nintendo .

I preordered a xbox 360 for our game center, but within 3 hours it had the red ring of death and I sent it back without bothering to order another one.

I'd probably buy another 360 just for me if I was really into console games, but I'm a computer gamer at heart.

Re: Has anyone gone Blu since Friday?

I was surprised too. I went Blu on Saturday. I picked up the BDP-S300 originally and five discs in the store (this particular location had a poor selection). After doing more research, I upgraded my player to the S500 model (advanced audio support) just yesterday and got another 10% off on the price match with CC. Superman: The Movie was one of my five in-store selections but when I found out it was on the mail-in list, I returned it to get the Blade Runner 5 disc set. I may return another in-store selection as I read the reviews weren't so favorable on it. The problem is finding a store that has something I want. Couldn't find any with the Kubrick films. Oh well, there always other stores further away....
