7.1 Side Speaker Distance

I recently purchased a Onkyo HT-SR800(7.1 system) and I need some advice on how to go about setting the speakers up. How much space is necessary to be between the side speakers and the viewers ears? I have planned to place the speakers about 2 feet from the sides of the sofa due to space restrictions. Is this enough? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Distance isn't a big issue as long as you calibrate accordinly. Use an SPL meter to set the levels and a tape measure to set the distances. And yes, I have made my wife sit in my seat (the sweet spot) and I measured from her head to each speaker so I could set the distance values in the receiver exactly.
