Sonys main priority should be...

to phase out all existing DVD catalog releases.
Let EVERY SINGLE TITLE that has been already released on DVD, go out of print within the next 2 years.

They need Blu-ray to become THE standard now. There is no way that can happen with all their titles available on inexpensive 'good enough' DVDs.
Because catalog product is seen as low profile, low performing, they can start here.
After that I would institute a planned moritorium (similar to Disneys paradigm) with every new to DVD release- of 12 months or less.

interestingly though, Sony is the only company with whom this strategy is incumbent. If I were Warner or anyone else, I would continue to exploit the penetration of the DVD format as much as possible, as long as possible.
For Sony, this is a much different story. If these two co-exist, Bd ultimately loses.

They won the war, now they have to prove they can win the peace- otherwise they are ultimately the ones that have been 'played'.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

The existing production lines certainly cannot handle that.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

I agree. To release double and triple-dips for Sony is just stupid. They should only be releasing new titles in SD. This does not mean no catalog titles; it means titles that have never been released on shiny 5-inch discs.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

Sony's main priority should be to court Paramount and Universal, this thing is still far from over.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

Actually, that would be the BDA's priority. Granted, that includes Sony, but Sony needs to do some major work on the software front to make this format any sort of standard.

I'm not saying immediately replace every title you take out of print with a Bd.
There has to be a demand before you can resell catalog product. Taking it out of print for several years so that you can't buy any copy of it at all, creates that demand.
Merely having a higher res version, when a standard def version has been and continues to be available, doesn't.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

They've already been doing that for the past couple years by reissuing many catalog titles with only the pan & scan versions on them. And for that reason, I'm not buying any new Sony equipment, and why I didn't want Blu-Ray to win even though it does seem to be the better format.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

Well this certainly would be a strategy for failure.

It's highly unlikely that the general public would rush out to buy an expensive player just so they could watch Sony content. The more probably result would be that the general public would simply pass them over.

The main priority for Sony should be to get an inexpensive player to the market. At the current prices the general public simply will not buy them in great enough numbers to create a viable install base for HD to become a standard.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

Sony's list of priorities should be...

1) Design a player that does not have to be updated every time a new feature is used on a disc.

2) Design a player that one does not have to start BEFORE making the popcorn.

3) Design a player that mainstream consumers can afford/justify.

4) Get Fox to actually release the titles they announce.

That would be a start.

... keeping BD software prices down...

As there's no longer a war, could software prices be on the rise? Sony's and Fox's prices are scary already.

Re: Sonys main priority should be...

Sony's main priority should be to try and reduce all that red ink oozing from their accounting department after the billions in loans to fund the ps3 and now paying for blu-ray distribution.
