Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

Have 124 HD DVD's and 146 Blu-rays and have been waiting for the end of the HDM war.

From the beginning, April 16, 2006, I started purchasing only high definition format media instead of anything available in SD DVD and when possible, choosing the greater potential of Blu-ray. On the rare occasion that a movie would be released that I especially cherished, I would buy the title in both formats, to be safe, when available.

Now, in anticipation that HD DVD's will eventually become obsolete, I intend not to buy any more titles as I've also done with SD DVD's, even exclusive ones, but unlike SD DVD's, I feel equipment and HD DVD obsolescence will have a quicker demise.

It seems you have the means, so it might be worth it to buy a combo player and keep your HD-DVD library.

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

My HDM library just hit the 300 mark with a 50/50 split to each format. I intend to keep my HD DVD collection and even buy another HD DVD player(s) to ensure myself of enjoying that collection for many years to come.

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

I say just do what you planned on doing all along since it sounds like you probably approached all this w/ a plan. If you really didn't have a plan for this, then you probably don't need the ca$h anyway. With that many HDD titles, might as well just keep on enjoying them -- not like their quality is suddenly inferior to BD. Also, some suggest snapping up clearance priced HDD players as they get marked down in the near future -- I say why not also snap up clearance priced (or used) HDD titles, instead of selling, if there are any that interest you.

I don't think you'll see Universal going blu-ray anytime in 2008, and probably not Paramount either. Hang on to your HD DVD player, there is still a bit more of this war to go.

Have no plan and looking for practical ways to use the money to build a current and contemporary HD collection.

The fact is that I haven't viewed one DVD in months. I will keep the SD DVD's, because they look good on current equipment and are a thriving & healthy medium. The HD DVD's will gradually be replaced with Blu-ray or other HD media.

Oh, and I know the best time to have sold the HD DVD's was yesterday!

My thoughts exactly.

Also I wouldn't automatically assume that just because a title has been released on HD DVD that it too will see a Blu-ray release anytime soon. I imagine there are may be a title or two (with my luck it will be a personal favorite) that will be long in coming to Blu-ray.

Well, maybe there's also the possibility of donating the collection + player to your favorite charity or nursing home or other such places. No idea if you can get a useful tax write-off for that, but it'd be for a good cause assuming your tastes in movies are suitable for that...

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

I do expect Universal to make a move here very soon and I think Paramount will be back to Blu this year, as well. The dominos will fall quickly. With that said, if you have a very large HD DVD collection keeping it and even buying an extra HD player(s) is a good long term solution.

For myself, I've stuck mostly to renting both formats and I only own about 12 HD DVDs which I may just sell as a bundle probably fairly soon.

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

My current plans haven't changed. I will buy a decent combo-player when (if) it arrives pretty soon. A region-A one.
I may also buy another HD DVD player in the future once I'm starting to fear the format may be going the way of the Dodo - which I don't fear yet.

I currently own 160+ HD DVD releases, some of which are format-exclusive, and I'm not going to sell any yet.

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

My current HD DVD collection isn't going anywhere (well except for a handful of Warner titles when they're announced for a BD release).

I'm sure if Paramount and Universal stick with exclusivity through 2008 there will be a few more catalog titles that I won't be able to pass up but I think I'm done with blind-buys of new films on HD DVD and expensive sets.

Exactly. It doesn't look good for HD DVD, but we will just have to wait and see.

I have a feeling there will be a couple more big surprises before this format war is done!

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

Unless you are unhappy about your HD DVD titles, or your player went kaput, why would you want to sell them? As far as high-def goes, I'm HD DVD only with a small collection of titles that I plan to enjoy for quite awhile. I will probably purchase a few more titles down the road, and if they are priced in the SD DVD range, probably pick up more than a few. Just because Warner's will be going BD only after May, doesn't mean my collection became obsolete or quit working.
I am keeping mine and hope to have many years of enjoyment with them.
Also, if you are format neutral, who says the studios are going to re-release all their HD DVD titles in Blu-ray format, even if or when Universal and Paramount go Blu-ray? It may or may not happen, so if it were me, I'd just
enjoy what I have and use it.
Who knows, maybe HD DVD will become a collector's item. Stranger things have happened.

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

I've yet to be convinced that Blu will become mainstream with John Q. Public until studios stop producing Standard DVDs.
Does anyone think -that- will ever happen?

Cees,

If you don't mind my asking, why don't you fear this happening now?

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

It's really sad to see this happen. I don't like superior hardware/software(over standard dvd) to fail. When DIVX discs were introduced, there was practically a cheering section for it to fail, and it was a dumb idea so it deserved to fail.

I knew the two formats couldn't co-exist forever, but this WB Blu Ray deal is like a bullet to the head of of HD DVD. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks!

Because it isn't happening and because I have no reason to fear it.

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

If people think there are alot of films which are Blu-ray exclusive, think again... Not only is there an expansive world outside of the USA, there's also the world of "importing". What might be a Blu-ray exclusive someplace is also on HD DVD somewhere else.
It does help to do the research. I think it's calling too early in this current format war which one will reign more triumphant but I'd give it more time. I do wish more classic titles were featured on HD optical disc media but I figure what sells is alot of contemporary titles.
The format war isn't over entirely yet.

Re: Would now be the time to sell an HD DVD Collection?

Joe, if you are giving those away I'll take a good number off your hands.

Even with the announcement I don't think Warner is/can start releasing those HDDVD discs to Blu overnight. Probably is going to take until late 2008 and into 2009 to see titles like Batman Begins, V for Vendetta and Matrix.
