12 ANGRY MEN
50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

United Artists’ Academy Awardâ Nominated Legal Drama From
Renowned Director Sidney Lumet Arrives March 4

Anniversary Edition DVD Commemorates United Artists’ 90th Anniversary Celebration

LOS ANGELES, CA – MGM Home Entertainment celebrates the recent anniversary of one of the greatest character-driven dramas in film history when 12 Angry Men: 50th Anniversary Edition comes to trial on DVD March 4. Directed by five-time Oscarâ nominee Sidney Lumet (The Verdict, Dog Day Afternoon) in his feature film directorial debut, and written by award winning playwright Reginald Rose, 12 Angry Men provides an intense look at a jury of 12 men whom are sent to deliberate the final verdict in the murder trial of a young Latino boy. What unfolds is a gripping character study where the personality of each juror is revealed and the facts of the case become evidently clear.

Nominated for three Academy Awardsâ including Best Picture, Best Director (Lumet) and Best Screenplay (Rose), 12 Angry Men stars Henry Fonda and features a legendary supporting cast that includes Lee J. Cobb (The Brothers Karamazov, On The Waterfront), Jack Warden (Heaven Can Wait, Shampoo), Martin Balsam (All The President’s Men, A Thousand Clowns), Ed Begley (Sweet Bird of Youth, The Unsinkable Molly Brown) and
Jack Klugman (“Quincy M.E.,” “The Odd Couple”).

Part of the United Artists catalog, the 50th anniversary edition of 12 Angry Men is being released by MGM as part of a larger United Artists 90th Anniversary campaign, an 18-month global celebration leading up to the 90th anniversary of the studio in 2009 that serves to reinforce and remind people of the powerful film history and legacy of the famed studio.

The 12 Angry Men: 50th Anniversary Edition DVD includes two all-new featurettes; “Beyond A Reasonable Doubt: The Making of 12 Angry Men” and “Inside The Jury Room” and will be available for the suggested retail price of $19.98 US/$25.98 Canada. Prebook is February 6.

Re: MGM Press Release: 12 Angry Men

Hopefully the transfer will be anamorphic this time. Non-anamorphic 1.66:1 on a 16x9 display does not work very well.

Re: MGM Press Release: 12 Angry Men

I first saw 12 Angry Men when I was in 8th grade way back in 1984. I had a class called Youth and the Law and the teacher showed it to the class. I really liked it then and still think it's a great film now. I'm definitely interested in the 50th Anniversay edition.

Re: MGM Press Release: 12 Angry Men

Buy.com's listing for the 50th Anniversary Edition says "Anamorphic Widescreen 1.66:1". I don't know how trustworthy that is given that no other e-tailer lists the same information, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they have the skinny.

Edit: I lied. DVDWorld has the same information in their listing.

And a further follow-up: DVD Beaver's comparison page confirms that the 50th Anniversary Edition is anamorphic, and shows it to be a lovely transfer, too.

And it also has an audio commentary from a film historian which appears to be very informative. I'll definitely be buying this now.

Re: MGM Press Release: 12 Angry Men

Just a little note to say the original 1954 Tv version of 12 Angry Men from the anthology series Studio One will be released in a Studio One set on Nov. 11. I know this is not a TV thread, but I thought it would be good news to many people who, like me, have always wanted to see the Emmy-winning original starring Robert Cummings.

Thanks Karine! How's Koch as far as quality goes? The few I've seen have varied.

I am not very familiar with this company's products but the description from DVDEmpire says: "This collection features 17 restored and re-mastered dramas along with a wealth of extensively researched bonus materials." For the record, DVDEmpire's price on this boxset is much cheaper than Amazon's right now.

It would be interesting to see Mr. Roper in the Martin Balsam role as Head Juror.

Edward Arnold in the Ed Begley role - gotta see it.

Re: MGM Press Release: 12 Angry Men

I finally took the time to see this film when it aired on PBS last night. I always wanted to see it. So I am happy to see it just re-issued on DVD. The broadcasted version appears to 4:3 and looked okay, some scratches here and there.

That was some splendid film making, acting and staging. The whole movie was riveting and just set in two sets, the jury room and the rest room. Fonda's performance was nuanced, sympathetic and realistic and just the right contrast to Lee J Cobb and Ed Begley's performances of angry and prejudiced men. You just don't see films like this anymore with actors that are older and not picture perfect. The whole cast was terrific and realistic!

You need to get the DVD Nelson. It looks good, and has a few extras. Best of all, you can find it for under $15 easy!

Yes Rick. I had been waiting to pick-up the DVD before I saw this film so I'd see it at it's best. It's on my list, so I won't forget! $15 bucks is a great price too, thanks!
